Faking the Data on Changing Attitudes About Gay Marriage

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:32 am

Recently, there was a scientific study showing that people’s attitudes on gay marriage could be changed by interacting with a gay pollster whose life would actually be affected by the right to marry. It seemed logical that people would want to be more polite to the gay pollster, but the surprising result of the study was that the changes in attitude were long-lasting.

Now it turns out that the study was likely based on faked data. It has been withdrawn, and 538 warns us how easy it is to fall for hoaxes like this.

People who are willing to lie to push their political agenda cannot be trusted in any respect.

“Caitlyn Jenner” And The “New” Normal

The welcome mat is out for “Caitlyn”:

A new normal has arrived on America’s doorstep. It’s been done before, of course, but this time it’s someone famous, someone who has been in our homes for decades, someone who is a celebrated champion. A champion then, and now, according to many, a hero.

And you are expected to embrace this new normal. Who are you to withhold your approval? Who are you to judge? The new standards are being set for you, not by you. After all, you’re not God. Neither are they, of course, but that is beside the point. Consider what, if anything, had to be lost so this new normal could be found.

And now, here we are: Thus begins a great National Contest to see who can best pretend that None of This Is In Any Way Strange. Embrace the new normal.

UPDATE BY PATTERICO: You know that British Columbia is considering removing gender designations from birth certificates, right?

Pretty soon the phrase “it’s a boy!” will be considered transphobic and offensive.
