Riots in Baltimore Despite Mayor’s Decision to Give Protestors a Place to Destroy Stuff

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:54 pm

She actually said this:

We also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well.

It’s right there in the video. That’s what she said.

Unfortunately, people decided they wanted to destroy more than the space they were given for that purpose. Specifically, they wanted to break a few officers’ bones too, and ideally kill one or two if they could manage it. So far, they have come close:

Police on Monday clashed with crowds of young people who tossed rocks and bricks at officers, looted stores and damaged police cruisers, injuring several officers.

Police said that 15 officers have been hurt in incidents that began near the Mondawmin Mall in the Reisterstown Road area. Some officers suffered broken bones and one officer was unresponsive, police said in an afternoon press conference. By Monday night, two officers remained hospitalized, they said.

Next time maybe the mayor will turn over a couple of cops to those who wish to kill officers. In the interest of keeping the peace, you see.

UPDATE: OK, she has issued a statement claiming that she was trying to say, in effect, that giving the protestors a space had the unintended side effect of giving a space to those who wanted to destroy. That sounds plausible, although not nearly as funny. We’ll just chalk this one up to a horribly phrased sentiment.

  2. The developments came two days after a police union attorney spoke of the possibility that the injuries occurred during a “rough ride,” a frequently claimed practice in which police vehicles are deliberately driven in a way that injures suspects.

I liked the part where some woman named Nurit Baytch handed Max Blumenthal his @$$. He tweeted that he hoped the Baltimore PD didn’t use that “brutal fighting style” they learned from the Israelis.

She tweeted back and asked if anyone would (be stupid enough to) blame Koreans for police brutality because the Saint Paul PD trains in Tae Kwon Do?

I added the part in the parentheses. It was implied.

  19. http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2015/04/rioting-intensifies-in-baltimore-liberal-narratives-among-the-casualties.php

I have to disagree with Paul Mirengoff here. First, he didn’t get the memo that the mayor didn’t intentionally to give rioters, looters, and gang bangers a space to destroy.

All though she might as well have. What did she think they were going to do?

Second, the liberal narrative isn’t in tatters. Because this riot isn’t about Freddie Gray. Know what it’s about? White supremacy and white privilege! Apparently you don’t even need any whites around, because as Mirengoff notes the mayor is black, the police chief is black, and most of the police force is black. Doesn’t matter. It’s still about white supremacy/privilege. That’s what the deep thinkers on MSNBC were saying.

So it’s like Detroit. They haven’t had a white mayor in over 50 years. Most of the city administration is black. I believe the PD is predominantly black. And at least one of those former black mayors is in prison, along with other city officials, for essentially looting the city coffers. But you know who caused all the city’s problems? White people.

  21. Did you see the Governor’s press conference? First he sold out the Mayor, suggesting she wouldn’t answer calls or ask for help when the State wanted to step in as early as Saturday. And then the National Guard General Singh, a female, said this wasn’t martial law … yet.

    DRJ (e80d46)

  22. They say the FBI is observing. Why? To help the police or are they looking for police misconduct.

Giving the mayor the benefit of the doubt, I wonder if her statement was not just misunderstood by rioters, but also misunderstood by police as a signal to give protesters a wide berth, thus causing them to take a more hands-off approach to the protesters.

    Dana (86e864)

  24. The police seemed to stand back all day. I don’t think that’s because they were afraid to secure the area. It seems more likely they held back because that’s what the city leaders wanted.

    DRJ (e80d46)

  25. They’re calling it a State of Emergency, per WaPo blog

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has issued a state of emergency and called out the National Guard to deal with the growing violence and mayhem in Baltimore.

More than 2,000 police from several different jurisdictions, including state police, Prince Georges County police, and county sheriffs, have been pouring into the city for the last several hours. But as the violence has grown, police have been unable to keep up with the rolling gangs of youths torching businesses and cars, looting, and threatening bystanders. That’s why Governor Hogan has called out the National Guard to restore order.

  26. So these deep blue cities which have been run by leftist democrats fro 50, 60, 70 years and more often than not black democrats, riot and burn and display lawleesness and hate and you believe this is caused by “a horribly phrased sentiment”, Patterico? This dumbass mayor is your quintessential democrat: black, leftist, hyphenated name. All the outward appearance of a complete and total moron elected on color and race with zero ability, capability or intellect nor honor. Screw Baltimore, I hope the entire town burns down.

    Hoagie (58a3ec)

  28. to your point, DRJ–

I’ve been watching the WJLA live coverage of the rioting and the scenes being shown are incredible. “Like a war zone” said the reporter of a business section of one neighborhood as businesses are burning because firefighters refuse to respond until police can assure them they can be kept safe.

Looters are targeting pharmacies, grocery stores, liquor stores, cell phone stores — apparently any business selling anything that rioters want. Police have virtually disappeared in some neighborhoods, giving the rioters a free pass.

  29. How many Baltimore officials are black? Most of the City Council seems black. What about the police officials and officers? Wiki says the department is almost half black. It’s hard for me to understand the black protesters’ anger here when most of the leadership and population seems to be black.

    DRJ (e80d46)

  30. OK
Just for speculation… lets say I’m chasing Gray and he slows down enough for me to catch him from behind… so I launch myself into his back with one knee and grab him around the throat and yank his head back and ride him to the ground. It used to be like that, if you ran from the cops, everything that happened to you was your own damn fault. Now it is becoming like the helicopter pursuit cases… just back off.
I’m not a cop lover at all, but running from the police usually get you beat up, witness the guy who got 650K for getting kicked in the nuts in San Bernardino. Hands and legs spread? Boom. Volley to the balls

    steveg (fed1c9)

  31. DRJ–you must not punish your poor brain cells by searching for logic or for ways to “understand” this. 🙂

    Here’s your Black police chief:
Anthony W. Batts is the Police Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department, the 8th largest city police department in the country. He was formerly the chief of police for Oakland, California, and Long Beach, California. His ex wife is former Congresswoman Laura Richardson.(Wikipedia)

  34. “What about the police officials and officers? Wiki says the department is almost half black. It’s hard for me to understand the black protesters’ anger here when most of the leadership and population seems to be black.”

It’s because they’re acting white, DRJ. Sheesh… get with it!

    Colonel Haiku (2601c0)

  35. The black leaders of Baltimore can’t possibly want to see other blacks confronted by police riot tactics, including rubber bullets, water hoses, and the like. I think that’s why we are seeing the police stand back. Police leaders don’t want to send officers into violent crowds with the possibility of assassination squads and limits on the rules of engagement.

    DRJ (e80d46)

  36. Well, I don’t believe her. I think she said on Saturday what she meant to say.

It is not an uncommon theory that you let these things burn themselves out and her comments is consistent with this mindset. Let them riot and loot since they are justified in their anger and when they are done, they are done. No sense in getting more people killed.

But Baltimore is a dump so, frankly, these images serve a great reminder to the “moderates” what Liberalism is, rampant permissiveness without consequences.

And if you want a Conservative in the WH, this kind of stuff actually helps swing the pendulum. Just look at at 2014 Election and Fergie-sin. Energizes one side and demoralizes the other.

    Rodney King's Spirit (b31520)

  38. They’re looking for police misconduct, DRJ.

Later they’ll “help” the Baltimore PD. After Loretta Lynch orders the DoJ to investigate local PD.. And they’ll announce they found the Baltimore PD engaged in a pattern of civil rights violations. And demand that they implement their recommendations as part of a court-enforceable remedial program.

It’s basically how the feds are going to nationalize policing. By placing local PDs under the DoJ.

re #19: of course white people’s supremacy and privilege is the problem, just look at what the Governor is, a white republican male !
re #15: don’t get your beef with the pastor. you can be violently enraged about justice being served without resorting to violence. I’m even willing to wager that the rioters are not rioting out of the injustice but using the others as cover for robbery.

What to watch for tonight: if the rioting spreads to the NorthWest part of Baltimore there is going to be a major escalation in the violence.

  42. @33 elissa: Batts came to Oakland from So Cal, Long Beach maybe, with the assurance from City hall that he would get support, moral and financial, to straighten things out He signed on and not long after that the Mayor pulled the rug out from under him, so he, instead of knuckling under, quit. He did something like a consulting gig for a while before taking the job in Baltimore.

He was in Oakland for maybe a year so he didn’t get a real chance to learn the ways of the local thugs, although that is something that is learned at ground level not in an office high atop a police administration building.

In Oakland, like Baltimore as well as other cities, the real dangerous thugs are inside City Hall, not out where people think they are…

  47. This is scary stuff.

Law enforcement intelligence officials have put out a warning that someone has sent a text calling on people to kill “all white police officers” in reaction to the death of Freddie Gray while in Baltimore police custody, raising fears violence could spread nationally, according to safety memos obtained by The Washington Times.

Officers are being warned of possible ambushes and urged to change travel patterns and to tone down clothes or emblems that identify them as police.

The Baltimore police department separately put out a press release on Monday saying various gangs, including the Black Guerrilla Family, Bloods and Crips “haver entered into a partnership to ‘take out’ law enforcement.”

A memo from the West Virginia Intelligence Fusion Center is more specific, saying the gangs’ targets are white officers. Its report quotes another memo from the Eastern Shore Information Center in Salisbury, Md.

“Law enforcement officers are reminded to remain vigilant when conducting traffic stops and in general contact with citizens,” says the West Virginia center, which monitors criminals.

The Eastern Shore center “officer safety bulletin” states that the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office received information from a citizen who received a text with a Chicago area code.

That’s because it’s leftism — in all its glory and (supposed) do-gooderness — that’s fueling such people, such places, such causes. Mindless liberalism. Sloppy liberalism. Idiotic liberalism. Liberalism run amok.

Race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexuality, gender and culture take a back seat to left-leaning biases and emotions.

If a magic wand were waved over black America and it suddenly became 90-plus percent moderate to conservative — socially, politically, economically — instead of liberal to leftwing, that would be the most fascinating, amazing, stunning transformation in human history. And since I can’t think of one (one!) community in the US (which is also made up of more than, say, a few hundred or thousand people) that is 90-plus percent moderate to conservative and which is also a never-ending socio-economic debacle or dystopia, such a transformation would be stunning in a positive way.

BTW, people like George W Bush, etc, etc, have to remember or realize this when believing that conservatism — and not liberalism — somehow needs to be qualified in order to make it palatable. Simply put, it needs to be proclaimed that one of the most liberal portions of the US populace hardly exemplifies (and actually is the antithesis of) “kinder and gentler.”

According to this article about the cancelled orioles game the rioting is already in Northwest Baltimore and has been since afternoon.

The club had been monitoring riots that began on Monday afternoon in Northwest Baltimore, about five miles from the ballpark, and kept in contact with Baltimore police throughout the day.

I think things will get worse in Baltimore before they get better for several reasons, but here’s one: I heard on tonight’s newscast that the rioting escalated this afternoon when school got out and “juveniles” started throwing rocks and looting. The news also said the public schools have cancelled classes for tomorrow. More kids will have all day with nothing to do.

  61. The entire game from this point on will be to shield the racist and feckless leadership of Baltimore and to assign it to Hogan. he made the very same critical error W did when he sat back awaiting the Louisiana governor’s plea for assistance. Instead of putting it out in public that he was fully prepared to send in the cavalry, he let things play out. Guess who got blamed for Katrina?

Hogan waited too long. Ironically, the refusal of the Baltimore cops to aggressively quell the violence today will be seen as an inability to take care of things. Things got far worse and instead of assigning blame where it belongs, Hogan will be blamed for following the law – as did W.

The bottom line is that everything the left has will be thrown into the fight to prevent their fellow lefties – especially those with darker pigments – to take blame for any of this. Since the silent majority does not have the stomach to actually deal with the progressive morass we’ve allowed to develop, the leftists will escape yet again.

Now…just what will Obama do to take advantage of this crisis? What new bad news will be announced?

    Ed from SFV (3400a5)

  62. Governor Hogan made a point of saying at the press conference that he was ready to send in the National Guard on Saturday but the Mayor wouldn’t agree, and he didn’t have the power to send it in without the Mayor’s request. I think he learned from Katrina that it’s better to pin the blame on the local authorities from the get go, rather than gallantly share the blame. That’s especially true if it’s true that the local authorities have to request assistance before the Governor can call in help, and I think it is.

    DRJ (e80d46)

  63. Here’s the Governor’s quote from today’s press conference:

Hogan said he executed the request 30 seconds after it was made by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Some residents questioned why it took the mayor so long to respond to the crisis, and Hogan made some poignant remarks to that effect as well.

“When the mayor called me, which quite frankly we were glad that she finally did, instantly we signed the executive order. We already had our entire team prepared,” he said. “We were trying to get in touch with the mayor for quite some time, she finally made that call and we immediately took action.”

Where I live, we call that “lowering the boom.”

    DRJ (e80d46)

  64. re #50: Mondawmin Mall is not quite what would be called NW Baltimore. Darn close though. the neighborhoods i’m thinking about would be about 2 miles north of Pimlico Race Track.

re #61: Gov Hogan made it well known that National Guard and State militia were at the ready. But you can’t just send in the troops because you think things may take a bad turn. Declaring a State of Emergency is not something to just do , as any conservative should agree (imho).
