What Is More Shocking To Diane Sawyer (And The Twitterverse): Bruce Jenner Becoming A Woman Or That He Is A Republican?

Not only did Bruce Jenner come out last night with Diane Sawyer and admit that yes, he is for “all intents and purposes” now a woman, he also came out as a conservative and Republican:
“I’ve always been more on the conservative side,” Jenner said.
Sawyer, looking shocked, asked if he identifies as a Republican, to which Jenner answered, “Yes.”
Because completely transforming from one gender to the other is not shocking and extraordinary, but being a conservative and a Republican is.

As for Diane Sawyer, she may have been surprised not that Jenner is a conservative/Republican per se, but that a person with his, uh, non-conforming strangeness isn’t invariably, inevitably of the left. Or perhaps a variation of damning (or not damning) with faint praise?

A psychiatrist was interviewed who did a lot of sports psychology said something to the effect that none of the Olympic athletes he had met would have qualified as being a well-balanced emotionally healthy individual.
I am sure there was some confirmation bias in his experience, but I imagine there is a grain of truth in it. It is a little easier to understand someone working hard at athletics when it will earn you millions as a pro something or other, but to sacrifice so much of one’s life chasing “a moment of glory” seems to nearly require a pathologic drive.

I have read where Johns Hopkins, once a leader in transgender surgery, has largely given up the practice, as long term results indicated patients were no more satisfied with life after surgery than they were before, they were still distressed and confused.

It would be interesting to compare political beliefs of surgeons with the rest of doctors. Surgeons are generally pretty much into what objectively and clearly works, so when they did not see transgender surgery working in the goal of helping people be better adjusted in life, they stopped it.

Apparently, Jenner’s confusion over the years was left untreated by anything other than hormones by his compliant team. Now that transgender is a fashionable political cause, he has chosen to take that final, surgical road. I hope he will be happy, but the fact that he sought and received two hours of attention on TV as part of his “treatment” and will get lots more in his reality series makes me fear for his future.

He actually said he’s somewhat ambivalent about that. He also is sexually into women only, meaning if he does go the full road and become externally a female, presumably only mainly homosexual women will want to be with him. In effect, his choice of mates in the future will be limited to lesbians or bisexual females, making social situations probably less ideal for him as he grows older.
The “yeech” factor of Jenner’s story is not as high as it otherwise would be since he’s never been attracted to or with males, but it also makes people like him — totally non-androgynous, successful, good looking, a history of creating fairly sound families — seem analogous to someone who won the $250 million Lotto and decided to throw all his money into the ocean.
Given the lousy decisionmaking of most folks on the left, it’s really surprising Jenner isn’t a dyed-in-the-wool Hollywood Democrat.

It is interesting that he also compares the present “transgender” craze to the “false memories” care of the 80s. That’s a good comparison that I hadn’t thought of.
