Josh Earnest Seeks To Clarify When The President Found Out About Hillary’s Private Email Account, And It’s A Little Different Story Now…

Filed under: General — Dana @ 10:02 pm

[guest post by Dana]

When asked in an interview this weekend when he learned about Hillary’s private email system, the president answered, “The same time everybody else learned it through news reports.”

Today, in yet another administration what-he-meant-to-say clarification, Josh Earnest “revised” the White House’s statement:

“The president, as I think many people expected, did over the course of his first several years in office trade emails with his secretary of state,” Earnest said. “I would not describe the number of emails as large, but they did have the occasion to email each other.”

“The point that the president was making is not that he didn’t know Secretary Clinton’s email address, he did,” Earnest said. “But he was not aware of the details of how that email address and that server had been set up or how Secretary Clinton and her team were planning to comply with the Federal Records Act.”

When pressed on whether Obama was aware that Clinton was conducting business over her private email, Earnest responded, “the point is the president did email with Secretary Clinton. I assume that he recognized the email address that he was emailing back to,” before saying that the important issue is whether she complied with the Federal Records Act.

Thus, the President of the United States and the Secretary of State emailed one another over an unsecured server and gave no thought to hackers or national security being put at risk.

And:

Facing mounting pressure to offer a more substantial explanation regarding her use of private email for official business, Hillary Clinton will be talking about the scandal this week:

It wasn’t clear what forum Mrs. Clinton will use to address the matter, but she plans to take questions from the media, said one person familiar with the planning. Her next public appearance is Tuesday, when she gives a speech at a United Nations event, and she could speak with reporters after that.

With plans to formally declare her candidacy in April, she is being pressured by Democrats to address the matter.

Can’t wait!

  1. Hello.

  2. so the PotUS knew that the SecState was at least at times using a non-gov’t email provider yet didn’t bring up with her “Hey, you are keeping in line with our official policy, yes?”

    sheesh, stop digging.

otoh, keep digging. maybe the pit will be large enough so that anyone involved with this administration would be unelectable as even dog catcher.

What does the Massachussettes Indian think about Hillary Clinton’s special email arrangement?

Youknow what the President’s spoxhole correcting the record means? It means he doesn’t trust Hillary as far as he could throw her. He trusts her about six hours worth. Isn’t that about the elapsed time between Barry saying he never corresponded with her to Josh ernest’s revision?

  11. seriously?

right in the middle of a national security scandal involving all the most prominent democrats the republican senate trash decide to write a low-class letter stating absolutely nothing beyond the obvious to a bunch of jew hating persians

  12. yup.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, one of the letter’s signers, says the Constitution specifically gives the Senate an “advise and consent” role in international agreements. “As important as they are, I’m not sure that the Ayatollahs will be surprised to hear that Republican senators want to have the advise and consent role,” he said.

  23. Josh Earnest is saying:

While President Obama knew that hdr2@clintonemail.com was Hillary Clinton’s e-mail address, he did NOT know, that that wasn’t a government e-mail address, albeit outside the .gov domain – i.e. it was possibly an easy to remember alias – there are such things – and didn’t imagine that, in any case, the whole thing wa not set up in accordance with the Federal Records Act and that the mail would not be forwarded to a government controlled archive.

He’s not being more clear because Obama didn’t think very much about this and/or Obama does not want to be accusing Hillary Clinton of doing something wrong.

“Poor Josh. He’s a sweet gentle soul. Sure, he’s had some troubles, fell in with a bad crowd when he was younger. But he’s always dreamed of being a White House Press Secretary. He promised he was going to turn his life around”, his mom muttered sadly to no one in particular.

  25. Great, let’s all pretend that the White House and the State Department, et al, don’t have designated compliance professionals, permanent high level GS employees on the payroll, complete with offices, staff, technicians, expense accounts and overly generous retirement plans, who are assigned the task of making sure political appointees to high office know they’re expected to follow established record keeping practices.

And, let’s further assume those non-existent professional compliance officers went through the motions of informing Hillary (through her top staff) the use of her own private email system, in place of the official system, wasn’t consistent with established State Department standards.

Those imaginary emails (and the responses to them) should then still reside on the government’s secure email system and be retrievable, albeit only under subpoena and only after the usual tap dance and double talk.

  26. Thank you two for demonstrating that stupidity is nonpartisan.

But, Leviticus, you have to admit that the left does breathtaking rationalizations of the flaws and foibles of liberal politicians far, far more than what the right does with conservative politicians. Simply put, are there rightwing counterparts (certainly that are as numerous or common) to places that are as corrupt and dysfunctional as the city of Detroit, etc?

    Mark (c160ec)

  27. A problem with the idea that hdr2@clintonemail.com was an easy to remember alias is that, in that case, the first part of the email address should have been something easier to remember than hdr22.

hillary@clintonemail.com would have made sense. (that one was probably used for other, more nefarious purposes, though)

It is very probable that Obama did not know, and Hillary did not get his approval for this
arrangement and he was not enough on the ball to react to this email address. Which is
    embarassing to admit.

    Sammy Finkelman (a551ff)

  28. Clearly the compliance department is woefully understaffed. They are stretched too thin. We need to hire moar professional compliance officers, ropelight!

  36. “instead of surrendering the server.”

    ROFLCOPTER!!!!!11ty!!!

First, Clinton knew her private email was discovered by the outside world after Sidney Blumenthal’s email was hacked in what 2012? Blumenthal alerted the White House as well. Any cleansing operations surely began well before last summer.

Second, what grounds does Gowdy have to demand the entire server given the limited time period of his inquiry? The server should be turned over to government auditors or archivists, not Congress. Lanny Davis, long-time Clinton fixer told Chris Wallace on Sunday examination of the server was certainly an option.

  39. I’m sure it’s just an unrelated coincidence that the State Dept and WH networks were compromised after Guccifer penetrated Sidney Blumenthal’s and Hillary’s emails to one another. Remember the administration said the dealt with the network intrusions but couldn’t discuss how the penetration occurred. Hmmmmmm….
