‘Remind Me Again Why We Have a First Amendment’

[guest post by Dana]

Per the suggestion of the commentariat to add this as a post, commenter Walter Cronanty (whose name is a combination of Walter Duranty and Walter Cronkite, the most duplicitous and hypocritical purveyors of misinformation known to US journalism) brings us this in light of the Ross Douthat’s The Blasphemy We Need post this morning. Cronanty observes:

Note that the NYTs not only refuses to print the cartoons, it also is engaging in self-censorship lest the barbarians find offense. Note the disappearing paragraph after the NYTs sanitizes its copy:
Originally it read:

“Sigolène Vinson, a freelancer who had decided to come in that morning to take part in the meeting, thought she would be killed when one of the men approached her.

Instead, she told French news media, the man said, “I’m not going to kill you because you’re a woman, we don’t kill women, but you must convert to Islam, read the Quran and cover yourself,” she recalled.”

Now it reads:

“Sigolène Vinson, a freelance journalist who had come in that morning to take part in the meeting, said that when the shooting started, she thought she would be killed.

Ms. Vinson said in an interview that she dropped to the floor and crawled down the hall to hide behind a partition, but one of the gunmen spotted her and grabbed her by the arm, pointing his gun at her head. Instead of pulling the trigger, though, he told her she would not be killed because she was a woman.

“Don’t be afraid, calm down, I won’t kill you,” the gunman told her in a steady voice, with a calm look in his eyes, she recalled. “You are a woman. But think about what you’re doing. It’s not right.””

  1. Hello.

    Dana (8e74ce)

  2. the second way they write it makes a nice contrast with evil, white American women-killers like that Santa Barbara guy or that guy that shot Gabby

muslim killers are way more merciful and progressive if you think about it

  3. This is worthy of a post. Thanks, Dana.

At some point, the New York Times will have to stop publishing because virtually everything will be politically incorrect or offensive.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  4. Maybe they could call it the New York Fictional Times.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  5. It’s amazing how a few well chosen words can change the entire tone of a story – even one so awful. I would love to hear a recording of precisely what was said. I don’t trust the NYT. No matter what version they are currently peddling

    Dana (8e74ce)

  6. I dunno if anyone can publish the Charlie Hebdo cartoons without blanking out whiskered swinging nuts having a go at the prophets a$$.
The other cartoons that had the prophets turban as a bomb with a fuse were tame and should have been published

  7. The sory now reads:

Ms. Vinson said in an interview that she dropped to the floor and crawled down the hall to hide behind a partition, but one of the gunmen spotted her and grabbed her by the arm, pointing his gun at her head. Instead of pulling the trigger, though, he told her she would not be killed because she was a woman.

She disputed a quotation attributed to her and carried on the website of the French radio service RFI stating that the gunman had told her she should convert to Islam, read the Quran and cover herself. Instead, she told The New York Times in an interview, the gunman told her: “Don’t be afraid, calm down, I won’t kill you.” He spoke in a steady voice, she said, with a calm look in his eyes, saying: “ ‘You are a woman. But think about what you’re doing. It’s not right.’ ” Then she said he turned to his partner, who was still shooting, and shouted: “We don’t shoot women! We don’t shoot women! We don’t shoot women!”

One woman was among the 12 people killed in the attack on Wednesday: Elsa Cayat, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who wrote a column for the paper….

  8. So one of the gunman told another not to shoot women.

  9. At the risk of correcting my initial comment, note that I omitted the following which appeared at the end of Ms. Vinson’s quote in the original NYTs’ article: “After, she added, he left shouting, ‘Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar!’”

Clearly, as Howard Dean declared, the terrorists weren’t Muslims:

You know, this is a chronic problem. I stopped calling these people Muslim terrorists. They’re about as Muslim as I am. I mean, they have no respect for anybody else’s life, that’s not what the Koran says. Europe has an enormous radical problem. I think ISIS is a cult. Not an Islamic cult.

Makes you want to scream, no?

  10. 7. Wow, this story has more versions than a Joe Isuzu commercial. I wonder when Liz Alderman interviewed Ms. Vinson?

    Walter Cronanty (f48cd5)

  11. Eventually the story will be about a kind man who asked a woman to please let him in the building so he could discuss religion with the people at work inside.

    Dana (8e74ce)

  12. Well, I’ve been delightfully edumacated. I never understood the significance of “Walter Cronanty” before, but I agree with the sentiment.

Cronkite is like what we were talking about previously, that some things are not believed because they just seem too big and wild to be true. “Walter Cronkite spewing propaganda to weaken the US war effort?? Aww, c’mon, you must be crazy…he does that kid’s history show on Sat. am, everyone trusts Uncle Walter”.

  13. #11

Eventually the story will be about a kind man who asked a woman to please let him in the building so he could discuss religion with the people at work inside

…..and those nasty rude French people abused said kind man and drove him to kill them all due to the blatent insensitivity lol

    Angelo (c5d205)

  14. Were there two gunmen or three gunmen?

Reading things over, I think there were only two gunmen. Only two entered the building. Where did they get the third? Was he supposed to be the driver?

Eventually the story will be about a kind man who asked a woman to please let him in the building so he could discuss religion with the people at work inside.

No, no, it wasn’t like that.

Corinne Ray, one of the cartoonists, had gone to get her daughter from kindergarten (which let out at 10:00?) and the child was with her. Some detail here may be wrong.

As they arrived back at the bulding, two – not three – masked gunmen threatened her and
the child. So she typed out the security code that unlocks the main door. They told her (after she let them in? Or even later?) that she tell the media they were from al Qaeda in Yemen.

    One source:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2900750/I-let-terrorists-Charlie-Hebdo-offices-cowered-desk-daughter-watched-execute-cartoonists-Cartoonist-reveals-survived-attack.html

Charlie Hebdo cartoonist reveals terrorists threatened to murder her toddler unless she let them in – and how she cowered with child under desk as massacre took place

    …..

Security presence around the building was ineffective against the ‘well trained’ attackers, Stefan De Vries told Sky News.

The French journalist, who arrived at the scene moments after the attackers had fled, said: ‘There was protection at the door but they killed the police officers, they executed them and they started shooting in the offices. There were more than 50 people inside.

‘It was difficult to enter but these people, the suspects were heavily armed, and shot the police so yeah, there was security but it was useless.’

There was only policeman inside I think. Or if there were two, the other escaped, but was killed later in the street.

    Sammy Finkelman (6b5229)

  16. Who gives two f*ucks what the NY Times tells their simpletons.

Stop linking them, and they become irrelevant.

    someguy (37038b)

  17. At the end of the Daily Mail article:

Police officers were involved in a gunfight with the men, who escaped in a hijacked car, speeding away towards east Paris and remain on the loose, along with a third armed man.

Where did this third man come from? What was he doing while all this was going on? Was he real?

    Sammy Finkelman (6b5229)

  18. No women, no kids. Direct attack at the “offenders”, not a collateral attack on innocent third parties. Very efficiently carried out. Clean getaway. Only speculation about the suspects. Hmm.

    nk (dbc370)

  19. The brpothers are now surrounded in a small office building. They were recognized after one pretended to be a policeman. Reportedly they wantto die rather than surrender. They were told by someone ‘get out of here. We don’t kill civilians.”

The third policeman killed is now being linked to the attack.

When they entered the building where the newspaper was, they fired in the lobby, but did not go where a neghboring offfice was on the same floor. They also first went to the wrong building according to one account. This would seem to say they weren’t there before, but they seemed to possess inside information, knowing an editorial meeting where all would be gathered together would take place at 10 am. Maybe.

The second policeman killed wa sone of those encountered outside. Yesterday there seemed to a slight difference in the newspaper accounts as to just where that was.

The citroen that was the getaway car crashed into another car driven by a female driver, and they carjacked another car. It was in that Citroen car that the ID document was found. It must have fallen out of a pocket, and they must have been in a rush. Earlier, one took time to put back on is shoe before getting into a car. I think earlier.

Media were really confused yesterday about whether there were two or three gunman. TRhe police made the phantom third man the driver of the gtetasway car.

    Sammy Finkelman (6b5229)

  20. The building is near the airport. Two runways are closed. They are reportedly holding one ostage.

    Sammy Finkelman (6b5229)

  21. 18. redc1c4 Thankfully, the proposed law discussed is so awful even leftists would oppose it [I think]. Note that at least one writer believes the story is satire – I hope he’s right:

  22. The revised NYT article explains that Ms. Vinson told the Times that the statements about proselytizing that were attributed to her in other French language sources were not accurate.

    upyernoz (959084)

  23. i knew in my heart there’s no way they’d ever made those statements about proselytizing

    they’re not animals

  24. these ones aren’t as tiger beat though as the Boston guy

but I bet they’ll still look super-cute on their Rolling Stone cover

    happyfeet (a037ad)

  25. Bob Schieffer this morning on the radio said that this whole thing was eerily similar to
the Boston marathon bombing, and others have noted it.

In both cases you have two brothers who pulled off a terrorist attack and then went on the run with a massive police pursuit after them taht they can’t escape. And one brother had gone abroad for terrorist training.

A difference is that the younger Boston brotehr had no previous involvement with terrorismat all, but this one spent three years in jail. Also it was longer since the older brother went to a terrorism center (as far as we know – this may be wrong – maybe one or both were in Syria in 2014 I heard that too)

As for coming to the United States – the problem with them doing the same thing here, was that they couldn’t mail a Kalashnikov rifle to the United States, nor take it with them on a plane, even as baggage. And they didn’t speak English, which is a real handicap. Maybe Canada, but there is still the problem of getting the rifles here.

    Sammy Finkelman (6b5229)

  26. That they, if they are in fact the “they”, are brothers is the only similarity to the Tsarnaevs. They were professional, well-equipped, well-trained, and experienced (they had to have killed before). They hit a specific target and not indiscriminately at innocent unknowns. They purposely refrained from killing women and children. This resembles a commando raid or a mob hit and not the usual terrorist attack.

    nk (dbc370)

  27. The New York Post had the “We don’t kill women, but read the Koran” quote on its front page today.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  28. Yesterday, both the New York Post and the New York Daily News had the words “al Qaeda” in its front page headline, the New York Times had “terrorists” and the wall Street Journal had only “Gunmen”

Today the New York Post has “Paris killers” the Daily News has “Gunmen, the New York Times has “Al Qaeda Trained Paris Suspectm Official Says” and the Wall Street Journal has “Massacre Suspect Trained in Yemen/ U.S. ties Man Wanted in Paris Attack to Al Qaeda.”

They also reprotedly told a person whom they hijacked a car from that this was in retaliation for the mmurder of Anwar al-Awlaki.

    Not for insulting Mohammed?

I think jihadists change their story to whatever looks most avoidable.

  29. 26. nk (dbc370) — 1/9/2015 @ 7:36 am

That they, if they are in fact the “they”,

It’s clearly a bigger cell or gang, but an ID card from one of the brothers was left in their getaway car (which crashed into another car, after which they abadoned it and carjacked another one)

There are still at least 2 members on the loose.

That they, if they are in fact the “they”, are brothers is the only similarity to the Tsarnaevs. They were professional, well-equipped, well-trained, and experienced (they had to have killed before).

More trained than the older Tsarnaev brother, but not in bomb building.

They hit a specific target and not indiscriminately at innocent unknowns.

They did first enter the enter wrong door. Yet they had good information ABOUT WHO WORKED THERE and when they would all be together.

They purposely refrained from killing women and children. This resembles a commando raid or a mob hit and not the usual terrorist attack.

It may be no coincidence it resembles a mob hit.

They first were involved in crime.

And this is like Pakistan because Pakistan’s rogue military intelligence agency recruits its terrorists from people who were criminals and belonged to criminal gangs.

It’s clear there have to be some other outside contacts besides Yemen in 2011.

are brothers is the only similarity to the Tsarnaevs. They were professional, well-equipped, well-trained, and experienced (they had to have killed before).
