Houston Mayor Plays The Same-Sex Victim Card

[guest post by Dana]

Infamous Houston Mayor Annise Parker (D), whose city recently subpoenaed all sermons related to the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) from local pastors, is making the news again. This time, she is blaming the Texas Department of Public Safety for preventing her daughter to take a driving test “because she has two moms”. Parker married her partner in California where same-sex marriage is recognized, unlike Texas, where she now resides. And that, of course, is what this is really about. How to smear Texas and its hopelessly out-of-date hostility to same-sex marriage.

Parker alleged that TDPS refused to accept her provided documentation and that she had to make three trips in order to satisfy the request and get approval:

In a released statement, TDPS Press Secretary Tom Vinger strongly disagreed with Parker’s accusations:

“All individuals applying for their first Texas driver license must provide a variety of documents to prove their identity, Social Security Number, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status, and Texas residency. In this case, the adult applicant did not initially present sufficient documentation to prove residency. Once she provided the required documentation, she was able to complete the transaction. There is no indication that any delay in the process was related to same-sex marriage.

In spite of Vingar’s clear explanation of department policy which clarified the matter, Parker has offered no apology for her false accusation. Her last tweet on the matter:

On a side note, after word of Parker and the subpoenas for sermons spread, she found herself the recipient of 500 to 1,000 Bibles. If she opens one, she’ll find some pretty good instruction on how liars and those who make false accusation can find restoration.

  2. Hello, Dana.

They lie about everything that will promote sympathy their agenda. Everything is homophobic, or misogynistic, or racist, or elitist, or, or, or … Princess complained to the queens about having to follow the rules and every snivel is an opportunity if you look at it the right way.

  3. Good morning, Dana. Great post as always. It’s very interesting to watch the hypocrisy of the “victim” culture good intentions have wrought. The mayor wants sympathy and kind treatment…yet apparently was quite interested in quashing treatment with which she did not agree.

    Hypocrisy, thy name is progressivism.

Incidentally, I think this approach of sending people like the mayor Bibles is wonderful. I heard Hugh Hewitt telling his listeners not to send nasty e-mails or insulting letters. He urged people to send a nice letter, wishing her well and hoping she would appreciate religious freedom as well as privacy. And a Bible.

It’s sort of a Kind Alinsky approach toward opposition.

She is a democrat and a “Progressive”. Expect nothing less.

  6. Texas should probably quit accepting California’s refugees, before it finds itself the new Colorado.

  8. Note that the DPS spokesman said the issue was related to proving Texas residency, not citizenship. A birth certificate is used to prove citizenship, it does not provide proof of residency (and a California birth certificate certainly would not indicate Texas residency).

Proving Texas residency is quite simple — a document or two that shows a Texas address, such as car registration, a current voter registration card, a couple bills from different companies showing Texas address, or a number of other document types suffice. The birth certificate has nothing to do with that.

  9. I have personal experience with trying to get documents from a county in Texas. Big pain in the ass, at least compared with Illinois.

  10. I’d like to smirk — but I feel her pain.

My 15-year-old son was recently denied a driver’s permit because Texas wouldn’t accept a non-US birth certificate (he was born in the UK). We’re having to renew his US passport (yes, he is a US citizen). So we have to present his UK birth certificate to the Passport Office, in order to get his US passport, then present his passport to TXDPS in order to get his driver’s permit.

  13. Hello Dana.

Does anyone else see the irony of a liberal Democrat being put out that the government bureaucracy is making her jump through all sorts of hoops. Hey, Mayor Parker, probably 2/3 of those TDPS workers voted for you! Fix the problem on your end first.

Makes you wonder if Mayor Parker expected to be recognized at the TDPS office and had her feeling hurt when she was told she had to go back and get some form of ID proving her residency.
