Three Years Ago Today…

…Mike Stack was SWATted.

And Ace of Spades and I were threatened.

Just thought I’d mention that.

  2. why does it always have to be about you?

  3. Swatting thankfully seems to be a fad that has somewhat abated. Or maybe the media has kept its soft vow to stop covering it so heavily in order to deter copycats. I guess once in a while you hear that someone got called to Justin Bieber’s house or something, but hopefully bloggers are no longer targets.

  4. There have actually been a lot of them lately — just not as many of celebrities or political people.

  5. Gee, even after California Democrats passed laws saying that you aren’t supposed to make SWATting calls that and that they would be even more angry at you if you continued to do so?

  6. Crazy take someone would take politics so seriously that they would endanger innocent family members or email nutty threats.

But that’s the real solution to basically every mystery here. Mental illness. Politics is just an excuse. The thugs wanted a reason to affect good people, and they would have found some reason. I don’t have so much time to worry about these issues, and frankly it does get quite old trying to keep up with or understand crazy people who have nothing but time, but I still hope that one day some kind of legal justice will emerge.

Until then, I can settle for the mere justice of good people like Patterico and many others having a successful and happy life, full of friends. And the elephant in the room, at least in my world view (which is a biblical one), is that there is a greater, inevitable justice.

I suspect SWATting is going to become a much bigger problem. Next generation 911 systems include the ability to use SMS as a more realistic alternative to TDD/TTY, and by law these calls must be given the same urgent response as a voice based call (or else it is discrimination against the deaf). It is very easy to sit here and armchair quarterback the response to possible hoaxes, but it is more complicated from the other side of the call. There are some very good reasons to take an approach that prepares for the worst. I continue to see the best solution as a very aggressive investigation of all SWATting hoaxes and an emphasis on prison time so that the next would-be bad guys learn the right lesson. Over the long run, that extra effort could save law enforcement a lot of trouble.

  7. Have you heard about radio talk show host Mike Malloy? He wants to cause the police to open fire on someone who is open carrying a gun.

  8. In current events Anthony Weiner favorites tweet about sexting.

Weiner also claims in a tweet to have bought a thousand shares of stock in an online sexting service called Tinder at the behest of Matt Yglesias.

  9. This was also just about the time Lois Lerner’s hard disk on her laptop crashed. (well, a week and a half earlier)

Sarah Palin’s emails had also just been publicized.

After police visited the home of an underage girl who corresponded with Weiner on Friday, I asked my wife to hand me the front page of the L.A. Times on Saturday (the free edition from our hotel)…

This (when you read that LA Times paper) is probably precisely the time that Lois Lerner destroyed her hard disk, if that’s what she did.

BTW, she wouldn’t know enough to do it herself – some tech guy would have had to come in.

We still don’t know what was wrong with her hard drive, so we don’t know if he simply ran a wipe program, or took with him a few screwdrivers, aybe some other tools, and a hammer, and took it out, and put it back in after damaging it.

But it should have happened over that weekend, if people are being notified at 10:19 am Monday morning, not to send her email because her hard disk had crashed.

I think the fact the hard disk crash was reported on Monday morning is itself a suspicious indicator, although maybe she reported it had crashed the previous Thursday or Friday)
