Health Club Imposes New ObamaCare Fee

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:51 am

Fox in New York reports:

Some people who are members of the health club Planet Fitness are finding their membership costs have gone up because of the Affordable Health Care Act.

A sign posted at a Falls Church, Va. location says “Holders of Black Card memberships will be required to pay a tax on these memberships Starting January 1, 2014 as required by the implementation of provisions of the Affordable Health Care Act. This is not a change in your membership fee but rather a tax required by the government.”

. . . .

The reason these accounts are forced to charge the new tax is because they include the option for members to tan at the clubs. Obamacare has a tax on tanning salons. It doesn’t matter if the member uses or does not use the tanning facilities.

The reason that people might get the so-called Black Card membership without wanting to tan is that it gives the member reciprocal use of all Planet Fitness locations without having to pay extra.

In the future, the owners of Planet Fitness will be required to certify, through a self-attestation on their tax forms under penalty of perjury, that any raise in their membership fee has not been blamed on ObamaCare. (They will be required to certify that they eat right and exercise daily, but everyone should do that at a health club especially, so no harm no foul.)

  1. they should get rid of their tanning salons instead of pro-actively collecting extra revenue for a dangerously fascist and out-of-control authoritarian government

Or will the owners/directors of Planet Fitness get the “Engelbrecht treatment”?

  5. Planet Fitness is not a gym. It is more of a spa with a stairclimbing machine.. and the machine is stuck on the easiest level.
Hopefully people that start at Planet Fitness will go to a real gym after a month or two.

  6. Oh
Obama the Great’s affordable care tax act. Puts his hands in Americans pockets at every turn.
Because it is not affordable and wasn’t designed to be.
I wrote earlier about how my health insurance included taxes that go directly to a new state run bureaucracy they call CoveredCA… $13.95 a month
So the millions of Californians buying health insurance are filling this new group with hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
I predict that within a year there will be a major financial scandal within CoveredCA…

  12. So I can no longer choose to tan myself without being penalized by the government. Further, as a club owner I cannot raise my rates to compensate myself for Obamacare penalties. And if I protest the government taking over my life and my business, I’m a RAAAACIST!

  13. There’s not a right to mass murder, but there is a government power (remember, it’s rights vs. powers), as demonstrated outside Waco, Texas a few years ago.

Well, the forced collectivization of the farms, and the subsequent “famine”, are missing too.
But, I expect we’ll get something like that to justify the 2500-calorie State Dinners – just to balance the books.

    askeptic (2bb434)

  19. We do not have Stalinism. We have fascism. The farms have already been largely collectivized by big agribusiness and the remainder are at the mercy of the commodity exchanges and the CFTC. The government has hold of the pie but it’s sliced by its cronies. Or do you think you have the choice not to burn corn in your car, or that the prices you pay at the grocery store are the result of arms-length negotiation between the producer and the market?

  20. Ilya Ivanovich goes to the store for bread. The storekeeper tells him that the new shipment has not come yet and he does not know when it will. Ilya launches into a long and loud angry tirade about a miserable government who cannot even supply bread to its people. Two men in dark overcoats are watching him. One steps up to him, looks him in the eyes with a stone-cold expression, and says, “Last year you would have been shot for that”. Ilya goes home. His wife sees him empty-handed and says, “They were out of bread again?” Ilya says, “Not only that, they’re also out of bullets”.

  25. The only benefit from tanning beds is the production of Vitamin D. But Obama has been giving America the “D” for five years now.

I’m not just in a juvenile mood. It’s hard to get too burned about a tax on tanning beds. Seriously? If you’re going to have a consumption tax, what would you impose it on before tanning beds?

    nk (dbc370)

  26. They taxed tanning beds and no one cared …

Except tanning bed operators who closed down because many tanning businesses operate on slim margins, so even a slight drop in traffic matters.

Next time America hosts the Winter Olympics, we should have them in Lake Placid Alaska Salt Lake City Florida. Or someplace.

By the same token, Qatar—one of the world’s hottest spots as far as mercury is concerned—will be hosting the World Cup in several years. Because everyone wants to have a soccer game in 120 degree heat. Or whatever.
And all of the beer-drinking European fans will be thrilled that the World Cup will be held in a country where drinking beer may elicit the death penalty.

  30. In 2009, Congress decided to fund SCHIP by raising the federal cigarette tax from $0.39, which it had been forever, to $1.01. The objections came from the states. They predicted they would lose about 10% of their state cigarette revenues from decreased consumption.* All consumption taxes hurt consumers and businesses. It’s better not to have them, but if we are going to have them let’s put them on on things people can afford or can do without.

*Illinois solved its problem by raising its state cigarette tax from $0.98 to $1.98. It’s good to be king a taxing authority.

  32. Revisions to Q4 GDP from 3.2% down to 1.9% go hand in hand with revision to Q1 forecast, down from 4% to current 2%.

Simply put, that is not the kind of “growth” and “consumption” needed to cover the massive inventory build and so once again – thanks to Federal Reserve intervention – managers have been ‘fooled’ into believing in the future sustainability, have mal-invested, and next comes another stagnation (and the cyclical downturn []).

  35. The only thing that makes sense anymore is that Ogabe is trying to finesse a Mideast conflagration.

The mindset of “Ogabe” can be best explained by a conversation I had with a hard-core liberal several weeks ago, around the holidays. I mentioned to him that the founder of Islam, Muhammad, was a ruthless and cruel figure who was known to send out assassins to kill people who merely mocked him. The liberal I was speaking with, who in the past has expressed indignation about the politics associated with conservative Christianity, responded with a bit of disbelief and resentment—towards me and my basic assessment of an aspect of the history of Islam.

If ultra-conservatives are prone to being chauvinistic (“my way or the highway”) about something near and dear to them (eg, nation, religion or gender), then ultra-liberals appear to be prone to being just the opposite of that.

I think that explains the idiotic, coddle-Nidal-Hasan mindset of an ultra-liberal like Obama.

We’ve effectively screwed the pooch in Syria leaving the Qataris without a Mediterranean port for their gas. Alienated the Saudis who opposed the Qatari initiative in Egypt with the MB.

The Sauds already sell more oil to China than to us and now seem to be dealing in yuan.

Given our initiative with Angola we seem to be attempting to control subSaharan oil fields. What might one suppose the Great Satan’s ulterior motive is in giving Iran its billions and a nuclear pass?

Why, oil. China has been its lifeline, we’re not getting its oil but Iran gets to believe they possess another tenace.

So the Sauds have purchased Paki ballistic missiles shopping for nuclear warheads.

Libya is going Salafist. Turkey is cratering directly in part due to QE taper. The Kurds are restive with Syria and Turkey on the ropes and Al Qaeda taking up residence in the neighborhood.

The Ogabe input is to dose the mix with Chaos.

This is ISIS, which has actually broken away from al Qaeda in Pakistan. Of course maybe the same people are behind both. ISIS is sponsering now what terrorism goes on in Egypt. ISIS claims all of what is now Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel.

  41. The tanning tax is inherently racist because how many people of color, blacks in particular, are going to go to the tanning salon?

None, that’s how many. This law affect people of non-color exclusively.

Now that this provision has been implemented and people are being injured (in the legal sense) they will have standing to bring suit.

Kohls coupons are also sometime available on purchasing a specific amount of items at any of their retail stores.

It’s a double-edged sword as some would complain about not getting a huge goodie bag of
