Paul Lemmen: I Was Manipulated By Kimberlin Supporters (And Others) Into Attacking Patterico, Stacy McCain, and Others

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 3:36 pm

Interesting:

I wrote a number of articles that, to use a “nice” term, regarded “inside baseball” or bluntly, attacked certain other conservative bloggers.

I repudiate those articles and any article that brought any disrepute to anyone on the conservative blogosphere including, but not limited to:

Robert Stacy McCain
Patrick “Patterico” Frey
Ali A. Akbar
Blog Bash
National Bloggers Club
Lee Stranahan

I apologize and deeply regret my posts and actions that have harmed you in any way and retract any/all commentary about any alleged bad acts, bad faith or negative posts about everyone in the conservative blogging movement.

Why does Lemmen say he attacked us? You’ll be shocked to know that he claims to have been fed falsehoods by certain supports of Brett Kimberlin:

During a particularly stressful and challenging time in my life as a blogger certain “wolves in sheep’s clothing” communicated privately with me about the persons that they claimed were secretly moving against me, aiding in silencing my voice and limiting my free speech. Offers of an outlet for my writing, free of the back-channel chatter and purported plots against me. These people offered an outlet to my voice, my views and potential income and fame. I am human and I listened to the voices (much to my regret now).

This is not an excuse nor is it a repudiation of the posts written about me (such as that written by Big Fur Hat and Anne Barnhardt). Those posts are the opinion and views of the author(s) of the posts and though I hold them as inaccurate and over stated, I shall not challenge their right to post them.

I made myself a pariah within the only group of people I respected and admired by acting on the offers of:

Brooks Bayne
Osborne Ink
Crooks and Liars
Alex Brant-Zawadzki
Bill Schmalfeldt

Their compliment laden missives and chats, the manipulation and bad faith are clearly seen in hindsight but were blinding bright then. These people are evil with evil intent and evil motives. I reject them and apologize for any posts, articles and/or comments I have made on their blogs, web sites or other media. These people, through false and misleading information supplied to me (some, I have learned were outright lies), manipulated and guided my writing to produce their desired output. I in effect became their virtual sock-puppet, producing harmful posts that they used to attack and smear people whom I respect.

. . . .

To Bayne, Brant-Zawadski, Osborne, Rauhauser, Schmalfeldt, Kimberlin, et al; I say only this:

Fuck You, #WAR

I am not endorsing Lemmen’s post, as I am wary of anyone who has ever joined forces with Brett Kimberlin’s associates — no matter how contrite they claim to be. The same goes for anyone with felony convictions for crimes related to dishonesty. I’m not saying Lemmen can’t be reformed. I’m just saying that I am wary, and I don’t endorse what he says.

But . . .

But I admit to being curious about the “false and misleading information” and “outright lies” allegedly supplied by one or more of the above-named people.

Because that bit rings true, doesn’t it?

  9. Lemmen had been leaving comments at Brooks Bayne’s site and Breitbart Unmasked implying that Aaron and I were somehow using Brett Kimberlin as a way to scam money out of people. This fit in nicely with the Schmalfeldt/Rauhauser/Osborne narrative. Lemmen would call in to Schmalfeldt’s show, for example, and the two would talk about how our whole crowd was a bunch of scam artists. Then they would congratulate each other on how they disagree on politics, but they agree on telling the truth about scam artists like Patterico and Aaron.

Brooks Bayne would do the same shtick. It was disgusting.

I simply wrote Lemmen off. But apparently somewhere along the way he claims he figured out that these people were using him and feeding him false stories.

It sure is interesting, and I sure would like to know more.

    Patterico (9c670f)

  10. I think someone who is genuinely remorseful would apologize like this, but also reach out privately to his victims to explain what happened.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

  11. One thing about this: a lot of false stories about me came out from one particular pair of individuals who I won’t name because I don’t want to start fighting with them again. But they trusted Brooks Bayne and got in tight with him. Then they all had a falling out, and Bayne turned over personal information about one of the pair to Neal Rauhauser. This is personal information I knew but would never disclose even if I fought someone. That’s the kind of snake Brooks Bayne is.

Oddly, I know at least one person I trust who knows Bayne personally, and claims he is an actual conservative, and not a lefty mole, which is what I would believe Bayne to be absent this trusted person’s statement. The trusted person thinks Bayne is an idiot, but confirms that he is a long-time Tea Party guy and an actual (fringe, lunatic) righty.

Bayne is but one example of the fact that Kimberlin style tactics are not limited to the left. I could name others, but again, there are fights I don’t wish to re-start.

As Lemmen says in his post, this is all wayyy inside blogball, but I say it for the benefit of the SPQRs and SarahWs and Dustins and the like, who follow this sort of stuff (or have in the past) closer than the average bear.

    Yes.

    Patterico (9c670f)

  13. The very least he could do is give you his best memory of (or better the actual emails if he could recover them) of the false statements. How is a victim of a whisper smear campaign supposed to defend himself if he can’t know what was said?

There have been a few of these 180s, and it’s better to just ignore most of it as it either is someone who was dishonest and knows it or it’s someone who has a mental illness and can’t be reasoned with.

I will say that I’ve paid some attention to the lies and scheming against Kimberlin’s most prominent critics and it is amazing how much effort the bad guys put into it. They will weave amazing lies around a single (irrelevant) truth. I think the only reason it’s not more effective is that they can’t help themselves and they tell so many lies that even the pretty good lies are ignored.

I was initially impressed with Lemmen’s story of contrition for his mistakes. I distinctly remember thinking he was making a legitimate point when he asked for some more information about Ali’s charity. It turned into something that didn’t make all that much sense… basically a conspiracy theory that wasn’t supported by the initially reasonable questions. I admit I turned out after that. I already tuned out a couple of other folks who I feel did something as bad or worse, but along the same lines.

I know at least one person I trust who knows Bayne personally, and claims he is an actual conservative, and not a lefty mole

How hard would it be to pose as a conservative over dinner? Especially when you’re in the company of a conservative celebrity?

Right, apart from the minor issue of his Holocaust denial, which most of the tolerant left would casually overlook, Brooks is a stereotypical conservative.

He’s a conman, though, that was always and may continur his bread and butter. I couldn’t rely on any story he gave anyone about anything, unless there were clear and reliable confirmation from another source.

The guilty one may be afraid of causing even more pain or damage to their victim by such contact (especially if they’re somehow knowledgeable about 12 step programs — 9. Sarahw (b0e533)

  23. Patterico, you are right that I do follow this stuff for several reasons – both public and non-public.

But I had lost track of the Brooks Bayne angle once I wrote him off as a BK Crime Family wannabe. I had also lost track due to a different set of recent RL priorities with Lemmen.

I know I don’t have to tell this to someone of your experience but, just to be the redundant ass that I am: Assume Lemmen is trying a triple cross.

Its the only safe thing to do.

  24. SPQR,

I don’t want to be rude to him, since his post probably is sincere, but the fact is that I do proceed on the assumption that I am being conned. It’s not personal to Lemmen, either. My level of trust in people I don’t personally know has disappeared to zero in the past couple of years.

You guys, I feel I do know, for what it’s worth. I think if I met you it would feel more like a reunion than a meeting. I have had the experience before and know what it’s like.

    Patterico (9c670f)

  25. Wow. I really am not aware of his writings, but I am aware of what is going on and the despicable acts and for this guy to come out like this is certainly praiseworthy. I do say that not knowing at all his harm he was a part of, but I have my own battles and certainly things are being revealed to all.

  26. It’s a gesture that is much appreciated.

    Good job.

The stories of Twitter, swattings, Weiner, Brett, Neal, Bill S, et al are all kind of interwoven but with many twists and turns. I hope it can finally come to some sort of finale but internet anonymity will probably prevent that. It is an area that I think the courts will be struggling with for quite a while.

    What caused his contrition?

The original regret was some time ago.

What caused the the post linked to above to be published now, is that this is actually Paul Lemmon’s first post on his re-started blog.

He fekt he had to start it out that way.

    http://anexconsview2.wordpress.com/

    His original blog:

    http://anexconsview.wordpress.com/

was hijacked, vandalized and deleted, he says.

But late last year he says he had a post like that one (presumably something that repudiated what he had written in the previous months) on his original blog.

He doesn’t say when his blog was deleted.

He says this post is expanded, and goes into the hows, whys and who’s of his accusatory posts, but it doesn’t. It is all very general.

It could be he intended to go into detail and explain exactly what lies he was told, but then discovered he could not find anything to refresh his memory since he’d deleted everything from his computer earlier this year.

He started out attacking Brett Kimberlin in June 2012:

    http://www.popehat.com/2012/06/10/shut-up-they-explained-another-blogger-threatened-with-imprisonment-for-writing-about-brett-kimberlin/

Within about a week his blog had gone dark after he says he was harassed by our side.

    http://lonelyconservative.com/2012/06/well-this-isnt-good/

I think I remember going dark meant it went private. Later it became available again.

We have some idea of the lies Neal Rauhauser e-mail Paul Lemmen:

  37. 1) For the record, I would like to assert that I am not evil. Misguided, maybe. Evil, no.

    2) I think it’s interesting how willing – how very, very immediately willing – Ali A. Akbar is to forgive. But Ali Akbar doesn’t want to prolong the discussion or people might start asking why Nat’l Bloggers Club never released its EIN, or 501(c) status, or explained why it described itself as a non-profit and 501(c).

    3) Seriously. I’m not evil. Not even a little. I WISH I was evil. I’d have less guilt that way.

Alex – An entity can begin operating as a 501(c) 3 or 4 in advance of receiving actual approval of the status from the IRS. Surely somebody as intelligent as yourself has read the regulations and understands that fact and why it is a complete nontroversy with new not-for-profit entities.

Why the heck would and entity willy nilly go about disclosing its EIN to non-vendors or employees to promote fraud against itself? Please answer that question Alex?

  53. So our timeline is:

Before October 2012, he wrote articles suggesting we were scammers.

October 2012: he repented and apologized.

November and December 2012: he wrote articles and comments suggesting we were scammers.

October 2013: he repented and apologized.

Who knows what the future may bring? Should be interesting, at least.

  54. Patterico – Are you suggesting people actually go to that second site you linked in #51?

    No, I was quoting Sammy.

I actually suggest people do not go to that site.

But shouldn’t they know that by now?

    Patterico (9c670f)

  55. I don’t want to be rude to him, since his post probably is sincere, but the fact is that I do proceed on the assumption that I am being conned

Wise. If he is truly remorseful, regretful, and repentant, there will be a changed behavior that will be evident to all. However, when one waffles back and forth, perhaps because their conscience nags them for a while and then they declare repentance, I would submit they are just trying to make themselves feel better and quiet down a nagging conscience. It’s for themselves, not those they harmed. It’s good to bear that in mind.

Righting wrongs is never easy. However, doing so as much as his humanly possible – especially to those so personally and directly harmed – is essential. Without it, words mean very little, if anything.

    Dana (6178d5)

  56. “No, I was quoting Sammy.”

  64. I don’t know the series of events from Lemmen, but I can give my viewpoint of Bayne and his crew. I’ve touched on the situation before in other comments. I was attacked by two fairly prominent conservatives on Twitter. One threatened legal action against me claiming I threatened him and other people, which was blatantly false. He directed people to harass me which ended up in me receiving rape/death threats. He said he was absolutely not responsible and me pointing this out was, in fact, harassment. The other conservative had a follower who stalked me after he encouraged people to spamblock me. This follower regularly edited my tweets out of context and tweeted them to Loesch and Malkin, encouraging those two to have their followers go against me.

Of course, I never took any of the threats seriously and the behavior of the bloggers and their followers was laughable. But, I did continue mentioning these people by name. Often, people cry victim on Twitter but they are involved in the same sort of thing they cry against (for example, people crying about personal information being revealed or being upset about being sent to gulag, even though they perpetuate those same sorts of activities). I was still upset by the situation, but I was new to Twitter and was unaware that these two conservatives were known for these things. It is, however, annoying when I had helped other prominent bloggers with stories, only to be attacked by the very people I was helping.

Bayne swooped in and offered to defend me. I kept my distance. I have no time or want to be involved in any of it. Though, I can see how it would be tempting to accept the help. There is a “purity test” that is happening amongst conservatives. It’s been happening for decades and it is only hurting the party. Twitter and the anonymity it brings only serves to hurt this more. I have seen people do complete 180s on their views because they become more popular and know they will lose followers.

This may be controversial, but I have also seen people involved not necessarily handle things gracefully or treat fellow conservatives the way they deserve (this certainly is not aimed at Patterico, who I still think has remained the most graceful of all). I wouldn’t be graceful, especially with my family at stake, but I have seen one person in particular on the listed victims be quick to throw others under the bus and have minions attack on Twitter (though, obviously, what harassment people have endured is still unacceptable, but there certainly are those who I wouldn’t give money to because of the way I have seen them treat those willing to help). I can understand Lemmen feeling under attack, but for him to turn against his own? No, walk away and be the bigger person.

    Whoa, sorry for the novel.

  69. I pretty much said my limited piece over at Stacy’s. I did not bother reading the supposed apology; I wouldn’t give one click, and Lemmen has nothing for sale that I want to buy. I also over time have resisted even mentioning the guy because that’s the first thing he wants – as if attention will bequeath legitimacy.

Reading it reproduced here, and he’s naming a couple of names on the sane side:

“This is not an excuse nor is it a repudiation of the posts written about me (such as that written by Big Fur Hat and Anne Barnhardt). Those posts are the opinion and views of the author(s) of the posts and though I hold them as inaccurate and over stated, I shall not challenge their right to post them.”

has inspired me to respond here. ‘I shall not challenge their right to post them’ is a sopho-moronic statement. Trying to come across as the wounded beneficent perosn? Jesus wept. There is no such challenge sensible, except in the confines of your mind, such as it is.

Beware. The rabbit hole can lead you to little but a waste of time. I can save everyone a lot of that. He’s not worth it.

  70. Remember me Paul? You scammed me out of $1,500 with your ‘General in the Air Force scam?

BTW – when di you get out of prison for that multimillion dollar fraud in North Carolina?

  71. After reading about this Paul Lemmen person on the interwebs, I wouldn’t trust him to tell me what day it is.

He appears to have a history of being an imposter, liar, and scammer.
A good person doesn’t just fall in with a domestic terrorist circle such as the Brett Kimberlin Gang.

  73. I have dealt with Paul H Lemmon personally, I believe him to be a pathological liar and a remorseless con man. I’d caution you on believing ANYTHING he says.

    You all have been warned.
