I heard a clip from one vet who said something to the effect that he had already stormed a number of barriers in his lifetime and what they put up wasn’t going to stop him.

  5. According to reports, John Boehner was all eager to meet secretly with Reid and Obama to protect the Congressional exemptions for ObamaCare:

If it proves to be true, there will be a real uproar against the repub leadership.

  7. JVW, your local Liberal professional protester had an accident in his pants. He blames it on the shutdown and is suing the taxpayers for millions.

  8. Because to this administration this makes sense:

John McCormack reports on Twitter that the World War I Memorial is closed due to the federal government shutdown. However, a sign posted by the National Park Service says that despite the memorial’s closure, there is an exception “for 1st Amendment activities.”

Thank God our president is always supporting our First Amendment rights in these dark days. Priorities.

  9. Let’s see if understand this gub’mint shutdown thingy.

Every standard day of the week the gub’mint is making sure illegals can get into the damned country.

But when the gub’mint shuts down they focus on making sure I can’t get into the Washington monument.

When the gub’mint shuts down, the only thing that closes are the borders to Yellowstone.

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  10. When the gub’mint shuts down, the only thing that closes are the borders to Yellowstone.

If our side was as addicted to attention-grabbing stunts as the other side, we would send a convoy of 300 vehicles and 1000 people to parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon and simply cut the locks on any gates and drive past any barricades. The national parks belong to the citizens, not the government, so screw them for acting like we can’t access them without their permission.

  11. Sounds like Jon Stewart has caught so much flack from his mild ribbing of Obama and Democrats that he is going all-in on bashing the GOP over the shutdown.

Who’s policing this s*** if the government is shut down?

If the gub’mint is shut down, I should have an easier time getting into the WWI memorial. And I should be able to do whatever the hell I want, there being nobody to govern me.

Instead, I’m restricted to certain activities.

    Erik Erickson:

After three years of getting ready, yesterday the nation signed on to get Obamacare only to have websites across America crash. The ones that were not crashing were scam sites designed for identity theft. Amid all of that, if you tried to get Obamacare through an internet search engine, you probably got scammed. “[S]ome of these scam sites actually have better search-engine rankings than official sites,” reports UPI.

  22. If the gub’mint is shut down, I should have an easier time getting into the WWI memorial.

It would seem that the only thing standing between us an a police sate was the government. Who knew?

    Kevin M (bf8ad7)

  23. Isn’t it stunning to find out that when it’s necessary, the gub’mint does know how to keep people out of places?

And they know how to do it.

Now we discover that the gub’mint has some reserve force that gets called up during shutdowns to keep citizens out of places.

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  24. Note to Howard J. Mickens(Tlaloc to his closet friends), the Facts Man, who yesterday told us Twitter had maligned CT in implying only 13 Ocare survivors had applied. He said it was 18,000 all day.

Well, it seems they had 26,000 visitors but only 167 applications. Lots of internets tourism we gather.

    gary gulrud (dd7d4e)

  25. I meant to say that the gub’mint now concedes the point that sometimes it’s proper to keep out of places.

And somehow while nobody was looking the gub’mint got skilled at it.

  26. I meant to say that the gub’mint now concedes the point that sometimes it’s proper to keep out of places.

New strategy: Show up at National Parks in sombreros and serapes while holding small children and there is no way a government employee will refuse to let you pass.

  27. WWII Memorial is becoming protest central:

Seeing their comrades threatened by a government shut down, even more World War II vets showed up today at the memorial in D.C.

And more journalists. And more politicians. More people in general.

Rep. Michelle Bachmann particularly seemed to be capitalizing politically on the nation’s focus on the memorial.

{photo} Here she is leaning in and apparently telling a veteran that the memorial was going to open soon. She was later quoted telling another vet that security officials would have to “go through her first” to make any arrests.

What a most appropriate venue for a protest against the government. If it continues to get national play, the administration can only look worse than it already does.

    Dana (a4cc89)

  28. If I were a card carrying member of the MFM, I’d ask Jay Carney who apparently isn’t shutting up even though the gub’mint is closed how much the gub’mint spends enforcing the shutdown of the WWII memorial as opposed to how much the gub’mint would spend allowing WH tours.

This is a fundamental problem I can’t get my mind around.

  36. 30. The WWII memorial barricades …

    Comment by SPQR (768505) — 10/2/2013 @ 10:13 am

Who’s setting up the barricades if the gub’mint is shut down?

And why do we have barricades in storage to deploy just in case the gub’mint gets defunded, so people can’t go places they already paid for with their taxes?

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  37. While I agree, SPQR, it’s a gift to those sick and tired of government “solutions ” and interferences in our lives, as well as unconstitutional behaviors of this president. The optics of a swelling protest at the memorial look bad, no matter how they try to spin it. The lack of Democratic congress people trying g to help the vets looks particularly bad. At some point, not even a complicit media will be able to ignore or spin the visual.

I hope and pray more and more people join the ranks. That it’s our vets just makes it all the more significant .

    Dana (a4cc89)

  38. 35. You obviously know the answer…

    Comment by JVW (93c84b) — 10/2/2013 @ 10:17 am

No, I get it. What I don’t get is how the answer isn’t obvious to everyone else.

We have a government that stockpiles barricades just in case it gets defunded.

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  39. Steve57,

I read report this morning that the administration ordered National Park Service to put up the barricades…so people would be safe. That it was at the WW1 and 2 Memorial sites begets a lot of mocking irony.

    Dana (a4cc89)

  40. Regarding the WWII Memorial shutdown. The “1st Amendment” exemption was declared, but subject to any group of 20 or more people requesting and getting a NPS permit – you know, the kind of non-essential processing that can’t happen in a government shutdown.

Since every Honor Flight group exceeds that limit the NPS has painted itself into a corner where if it enforces the permit requirement it just shows the NPS doubling down on deliberately inconveniencing citizens as part of the Obama policy of making citizens hurt.

We have seen this approach documented in the past under Obama when internal federal agency email instructions told managers to find things to shut down that would MAXIMIZE public inconvenience and provide the most media outrage.

    in_awe (7c859a)

  41. So what you’re saying, Dana, is that the safety nazis are still hard at work.

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  42. If we shut down the gub’mint people will die due to the lack of micromanagement, sez the PR flacks for the gub’mint deparments who get paid to micromanage other people’s lives.

    Am I missing anything?

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  43. Yes, Steve. Don’t *you* feel safer ?

    Dana (a4cc89)

  44. I wonder why I see none of this covered in the WaPo or NY Times. Maybe they haven’t heard.

    Kevin M (bf8ad7)

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  46. There is no quit in gub’mint safety.

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  47. And here comes the “intelligence community” to tell us that the halfwits and nitwits at Langley and the J. Edgar Hoover Building can’t keep us safe during the shutdown. Gosh, it would suck if the CIA had to lay off those workers who have done such a great job in Iraq, Egypt, and Syria.

  49. Somebody is going to build a firearms super center in Mesquite.

I guess the gub’mint safety official who was supposed to throw up a barricade against that was forced off the job.

I’m not seeing the downside to this shutdown thingy.

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  50. I sure hope the slowdown didn’t prevent some Senate HR office from processing the hiring papers for Elizabeth O’Bagy so we don’t have to miss one day of her expert analysis of the Middle East!

Dana, I love how the ABC story you linked to made a special point of mentioning that Sen. Tom Harkin also showed up at the WWII memorial today. I guess none of the crack ABC reporters thought to ask him if he thought the Obama Administration should be petulantly closing the memorial while assclowns like Jay Carney are still at work.

    Steve57 (234b9e)

  61. I’m still amazed we have more people who’ll show up to guard things when the government is shut down than we do when it’s fully funded.

  62. As I mentioned above, the optics of the memorial shutdown are a gift to the right. Let’s hope they jump on this opportunity and not stupidly squander it. …McCain must be devastatingly conflicted.

  63. NBC claims government workers are terrified about a nearly century and a half old law called the Antideficiency Act which “prohibits the government from incurring any monetary obligation for which Congress has not appropriated funds” the consequence of which could leading to termination of employment, fines, or imprisonment.

I love this. The officials will think more about their decisions if they fear they will be in violation of the law.

  65. The President is paying the Park Service to keep WWII vets out of the their WWII monument. Not a peep from Democrats/liberals, except to support this absurdity. The party of shame.

These men are old, they have paid their dues and for some of them, this is a dying wish, not that Obama, his supporters, or the left in general cares.

It is not Obama’s private monument, but theirs and ours. He is a punk for dong this. He is not worthy to lead our nation because he has failed to honor those whom we promised never to forget. No other President, not even Mr. Carter has failed so horribly.

This is the true face of the modern Democrat party.

Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin was also at the memorial this morning lending his support to the group of veterans.

At least one Democrat figured something out. Careful Mr. Harkin, it might sting a little bit, it’s called honor. Watch your back, sir.

    Pons Asinorum (8ce71a)

  72. Pons @ 66, lovely comment.

    Other areas hit,

Immigration and Border Patrol enforcement will continue during the shutdown, as will citizenship and visa appointments. But the federal E-verify program, an Internet-based system that lets employers check whether newly hired employees are legally able to work in the United States, is suspended.

E-verify runs with congressionally appropriated funds, so there is no money to operate it, said Bill Wright, a spokesman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

During the shutdown, employers cannot use E-verify to determine if an employee is either a U.S. citizen or a foreigner legally authorized to work here.

Efforts to stop people from illegally crossing the border and to find people already living here illegally continue. Border Patrol operations are exempt from the shutdown, and customs officers at airports and borders remain on the job. Some training is suspended.

Two inches wider than the 1300×15 Paddle-Trak this sand tire has 15% more floatation and bite. The tire works well on cars up to 1200 lbs. It works very well on small 4×4’s without modifying suspension. Recommended for use on 12 to 15 inch wheels with 15 inch diameters.

Paul continued the attack Wednesday on Mike Huckabee’s radio show, saying Obama had more guards at the memorial than at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

“The president has assigned 7 security guards to guard the World War II monument. That’s two more than he sent to Benghazi. We’ve got more people guarding the WWII monument than we had guarding the ambassador,” Paul said.

Bash: You all talked about children with cancer unable to go to clinical trials. The House is presumably going to pass a bill that funds the NIH. Will you, at least, pass that? And if not, aren’t you playing the same political games that republicans are?

REID: Listen, Senator Durbin explained that very well. And he’s, did it here, did it on the floor earlier, as did Senator Schumer, and it’s this: What right do they have to pick and choose what part of government’s going to be funded? It’s obvious what’s going home here. You talk about reckless and irresponsible. Wow. What this is all about is Obamacare. They are obsessed. I don’t know what other word I can use. I don’t what other word I can use. They are obsessed with this Obamacare thing.

As has been pointed out on the floor in the past few days, they did the same thing on Social Security, they did the same thing on Medicare, now they’re doing it on this. It’s working now and it’ll continue to work and people will love it even more than they do now by far. So they have no right to pick and choose.

DANA: But if you can help one child, why won’t you do it?

    REID: I, listen…

SCHUMER: Why pit one against the other?

REID: Why, why, why would we want to do that? I have, I have 1100 people at Nellis Air Force Base that are sitting home. They have, they have a few problems of their own. This is, to have someone of your intelligence suggest such a thing maybe means you’re as irresponsible and reckless

I have this sinking feeling that if something awful happens — an airplane crash, a school shooting, whatever — that Democrats and their media allies will convince the low-information voter that it happened because of the shutdown.

Not so easy. They’d also have to convince the reporters covering them, that there was some kind of plausible argument for that, and convince themselves that they could say it with a straight face.

And various kinds of laws that were proposed (but opposed by them) might spoil the argument.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

House GOP leaders pushed a new approach to end the impasse, offering to fund some parts of the government — including national parks, veterans benefits and the D.C. government. The goal was to put Democrats on the spot by trying to make them vote against programs that are popular among their constituents.” The Dems called their bluff and now they are on panic mode.

The Dems called their bluff and now they are on panic mode.

That would mean they voted for it. And that would put the Republicans more at ease. So then maybe voting against it hurts the Republicans? No, it helps them, by making the Democrats look (and be) bad. By trying to exempt parts etc. they’ve made it more difficult to attack them for the shutdown.

  155. Day 1
    THE LAST STAND
I finished the wall today, it should hold them off for a while. I hope. Tomorrow I better look for survivors and something better to protect myself with. I have to get through the night first.

    Day 2

    IT WORKED
Well it worked fairly well, it didn’t fall down on it’s own is what I mean. They’re still just as slow as the others I’ve seen, don’t seem to make the jump to get over the wall.

    Day 3

    JUST LIKE ON T.V.
I’m shooting them in the head like the T.V said, seems to stop them quick enough. They don’t have an explanation for what’s happening though.

    Day 4

    COP KILLER
Killed a cop today. Not sure how I feel about that, all’s fair I guess. He dropped a revolver that might come in handy though. I still need more hands around here to get anything done. Should look for more survivors in the morning.

    Day 5

    DOGS
What ever it is that’s causing this, it’s not restricted to humans. Huge stinking rottweilers seem to be affected too. Man I hate dogs.

    Day 6

    THIS JUST IN
Pretty sure I topped the local roving reporter.
Wonder if I’ll make the news tonight.

    Day 7

    FAT FARM
These fat bastards are all over the place. They seem to take way more punishment than the others.
Need something with a bit more kick to finish them off.

    Day 8

    OH GREAT
Now the fatties are running… great.

    Day 9

    FASTER?
There’s something going on with them now, they’re getting faster and stronger. They’re saying that they should die off eventually, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening.

    Day 10

    PRISON BREAK
A prison bus from over at Emerald must have been carrying one of them. Killed a dozen of them at least, better than prison I guess…

    Day 11

    FEELING IT
Tired. Can’t write. Taking down fat zombie guys all day.

    Day 12

    THEY’RE ONTO ME
Oh oh. Had a visit from the zombie police today. Guess they heard about me killing everyone.

    Day 13

    GOD DAMN ARMOR
Aim for the torso they said, but noooooo, now the bastards have vests. Do you know how hard it is to shoot out the damned legs.

    Day 14

    END OF TIME
Well that’s what the preacher is saying. I find it hard to believe that some deity is doing this, there has to be an answer to it.

    Day 15

    TV
So much for contact to the outside. The TV reception disappeared last night, guess they finally got into the station. Looks like this might be it, soon anyway.

    Day 16

    RUNNING LOW
We’ve exhausted pretty much all the food in the area. Why did I choose somewhere so far from the cities?! Guess we need to make the decision to move or not. It’s just getting so dangerous.

    Day 17

    SOLDIER
Ray of hope today. Had a soldier approach the barrier tonight, albeit a dead one. But! If he’s around maybe there are others, alive hopefully.

    Day 18

    ESCAPE
We need to move in the next few days. There’s just too many of them, we have no supplies left. Problem is, where do we go?

    Day 19

    THE ARMY
Seems the military presence here are all dead. We’ve started making preparations to get out of here.

    Day 20

    THE END
Delayed another day… man this is getting dire.
