Steve57 (35dd46) — 9/2/2013 @ 2:37 pmHe is a reformer. And it is common for Senators to meet with foreign dictators. That is what I have read.
JD (5c1832) — 9/2/2013 @ 3:08 pmWe have always been at war with Eastasia.
Our problem is that people just don’t keep track. The Left has the advantage of the media. We don’t. So the hypocrites get to call their hypocrisy “an evolving position.”
It’s just political nonsense.
I mean, what did Senator Obama say about intervening in the affairs of other nations, unilaterally? And Senator Biden wanted to impeach a President for things that this President would like to do.
But the press spends a lot of time talking about Miley Cyrus and the guy in the Beetlejuice suit.
And racism.

Steve57 (35dd46) — 9/2/2013 @ 3:41 pmAnd looking at the Nancy picture, I remembered that Assad was an ophthalmologist and wondered if he told her anything about her condition.

Icy (216b6b) — 9/2/2013 @ 5:12 pmEver the diplomat, today Kerry called Assad a “two-bit dictator.” Yes, that’s the same John Kerry who once compared Ho Chi Minh to George Washington.
America, that once confronted a superpower, now can’t seem to get its act together to effectively confront a two-bit dictator.
Amphipolis (e01538) — 9/2/2013 @ 5:12 pmInquiring minds want to know: did the lady from San Francisco get off her broom and give Assad the Full Lewinsky?
Comanche Voter (f4c7d5) — 9/2/2013 @ 5:15 pm6. Comment by Steve57 (35dd46) — 9/2/2013 @ 3:41 pm
The Democrats loved them some Assads before they hated the Assads.
They never really liked his fatehr at all. Hafez el-Assad was tolerated by more by Bush I. (for joining in the war against Iraq – the first one)
Bashir Assad was originally slated to be a dictator. He was an eye doctor in London. His brother Bassel was supposed to inherit the mob, but then in 1994 he was killed in a car accident, so he became the replacement. he enterd the military academy and was put in charge of Lebanon in 1998.
You can’t say that he would have stayed in London – he was first a physician in the Syrian army and then, in 1992, became a postgraduate student at the Western Eye Hospital, in London, specializing in ophthalmology.
Since he never had wanted to be a dictator, or have any role there in the dictatorship, it was reasonable to suppose he would be a reformer, at least like Khruschev or Gorbachev, maybe like King Juan Carlos of Spain, who succeeded Generalissimo Francisco Franco. There was perhaps a feeling that he can’t be evil.
But he didn’t do that. He didn’t have the courage or the desire to tamper with the situation.
Then he first threatened and then had
Hezbollah carry out the assassination of Rafic Hariri, the former Prime Minister of Lebanon on On 14 February 2005. Haririr was well protected and the only way to do this was to explode a large car bomb killing many otgehr people. (In the FBI’s sting operation of Iran where they supposedly had recruited aMexican drug gang, they had their informant tell the people in Iran that they could assassinate him but they would have to kill a lot of other people – do they want them to go ahead? And they got the reply from Iran they want it now and it doesn’t matter how many other people got killed. Iran must have been thinking of the Hariri assasination, although I kind of doubt the FBI people were – they just wanted to make it a bigger crime, and probably did this without a suggestion that in time there could be a Plan B that didn’t kill so many bystanders but Iran took it as they can do this quickly.)
So at that point – in 2005 – they should have assumed he was evil. Then, in 2011, he completely went over to the dark side. It took some time for Democrats to realize this.
Sammy Finkelman (67ff63) — 9/2/2013 @ 5:28 pm12. First David Frost and now Frederick Pohl? (Frederick Pohl actually was one of the contemporaries of Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov)
I was kind of saddened to read that Jacques Barzun died this year. You knew it has to happen eventually, but still.. (actually it was last year)

Sammy Finkelman (67ff63) — 9/2/2013 @ 5:33 pm15. * Bashir Assad was originally NOT slated to be a dictator.
Sammy Finkelman (67ff63) — 9/2/2013 @ 5:35 pmDiplomacy is a delicate dance. You have to be able to communicate and socialize with people you may disagree with, while also realizing it is necessary for the safety and strategy of the country you represent.
Who can ever forget the photo of Rumsfield shaking hands with Hussein? Or Bush holding hands with whichever Saudi prince was important at the time. Or even Chamberlain’s historic meeting with Hitler.
Common people do not have the necessary intellectual capacity to understand the nuances required for international diplomacy. That is reserved for the elected elite and appointed agency masters.
I hope everyone understands this to avoid unnecessary confusion and angst.
There are sites to help you understand.

Since he never had wanted to be a dictator, or have any role there in the dictatorship …
Not clear, as the younger brother he may have found it prudent to conceal any ambitions along those lines, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have them.

nk (875f57) — 9/2/2013 @ 7:20 pmnk why do you want to go to war against syria. I know why israel wants us to go to war. same anwser?
james (8158f3) — 9/2/2013 @ 7:37 pmMan, I love it when the lefty Jew-haters join the party. And by party, I mean Democrats. it always exposes them for what they are.
Four things always identify a lefty:
Abortion on demand.
Hating Jews.
Gun control.
Government control of thought.
james, I salute you! Not in the Heil Hitler sense, though. Thanks for the tell.
Ag80 (eb6ffa) — 9/2/2013 @ 8:15 pmThe devil only knows what james is Ag80. Just plain troll, just here to dirty up the thread is my guess.
I love Syrians. I don’t want to go to war against them. The father of Greek bouzouki music was Franco-Syrian and the first song I learned to play on the bouzouki was “Franco-Syrian Lady”. Here it is for you, Ag80: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdJvHLKRgxk
nk (875f57) — 9/2/2013 @ 8:23 pmA truck carrying two Palestinians broke through the security barrier at Ben Gurion airport early Tuesday morning and stopped only when security guards fired warning shots in the air, Army Radio reported.
The two suspects were arrested and police sappers were checking the vehicle.
Flights were temporarily suspended due to the incident.

Every lefty poster uses the same gambit.
Accuse someone on the right of racism or whatever, then when the person on the right responds, accuse them of making the point regardless of what the conservative says.
They think it always works because it’s all they have.

elissa (a7644f) — 9/2/2013 @ 8:44 pmThere’s a surprise, JD.
Regardless in regards to my list above, why exactly does the left hate Jews so much? Especially since the Jewish vote is reliably Democrat?
There is a reason. I wonder what it is?
Ag80 (eb6ffa) — 9/2/2013 @ 8:45 pmAg80 – is it worse to hate Joooooooos, or to count them ?
JD (5c1832) — 9/2/2013 @ 8:46 pmOh yes, James. The drumbeat for starting WWIII has been heavy and loud on these threads. Especially nk.
elissa (a7644f) — 9/2/2013 @ 8:52 pmThe crazy guy’s such a fervent war monger that he doesn’t even ever want his daughter to date a member of the military.
JD:
Heh.
I may have told this story before, but I will again.
On Sept. 11, 2001, I was in my work cubicle next to a young Jewish woman. We were good friends at work.
As the events of the day unfolded, she asked why what happened did indeed happen.
Without thinking, I stupidly said “Because they hate you.”
I have always regretted saying that.
She asked me, “What do you mean?”
I said “Because they hate Jews.”
That was pretty much it. We didn’t talk about it for a few days afterwards. A lot was going on at the time.
However, one day she did ask me: “Why would they hate me?”
I said, “I don’t know.”
Ag80 (eb6ffa) — 9/2/2013 @ 9:05 pmNow Drudge has a picture up of Queen Elizabeth with the Assads. You know if that Assad guy ever entertains a new line of work (like he opens a restaurant or a barber shop) he’s going to be good to go with pictures for his walls.
elissa (a7644f) — 9/2/2013 @ 9:15 pmAh, Bashar al-Assad. Educated in England. Speaks Arabic, French, and English. Suave and urbane with a glamorous wife. Inherited his father’s political seat. Leads an economy that is dominated by one industry which is heavily controlled by the state. If he lived in Detroit instead of Damascus he would be a perfect Democrat candidate for office.
JVW (23867e) — 9/2/2013 @ 9:54 pmPelosi and John Kohn Heinz Kerry LOVE Assad!! They dine with him, and they look UP to him!!!

Gus (0870d3) — 9/2/2013 @ 10:10 pmProgressives sure do like their ruthless dictators – it must be the absolute power that turns them on.
askeptic (2bb434) — 9/2/2013 @ 11:17 pmThe absolute power they all know in their heart of hearts should be theirs.
One difference to keep in mind; Queen Elizabeth is a head of state. She has certain formal and ceremonial obligations. No doubt in that picture she is fulfilling them. In any case she is working in concert with her government and not undermining it.
When Pelosi and other House Democrats went to Damascus to make kissy face with Assad, they did it over the objections of the Bush WH. And they did so to undermine Bush’s Syria policy.
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-04-04-pelosi-syria_N.htm
Kerry, of course, went in 2009 and wasn’t undermining Obama’s Syria policy. Since Obama’s Syria policy, like his entire ME policy, was “I’m not George Bush” the new administration had adopted the policy of denying reality.
I’ve linked to this article several times; if you haven’t read it in its entirety yet you need to because it mercilessly details the abject stupidity of Obama and Kerry when it came to being 180 out from the truth any time they could regarding Syria.
http://www.newrepublic.com/blog/the-spine/the-multitudinous-disasters-the-obama-administration-here-syria-and-iran
To a large measure you can say the Democrats in general created the mess in the ME. It is a direct result of their Bush Derangement Syndrome. If Bush said Assad was a cruel, evil dictator then the Democrats had to insist he was a reformer. And treat him as if he was a reformer and a good guy who was open to seeing things the left’s way.
Naturally Assad treated them like the suckers they are. Now we’re all paying for it.
This is exactly why Congress needs to vote against authorizing Obama to use force against Syria. Because the left still isn’t dealing with reality. It never will. Just go to any leftist rally or Occupy gathering and see the rich, spoiled college kids wearing Che t-shirts, the gays wearing kheffiyehs, the love for Chavez and Castro expressed in chat rooms and on twitter using the technological fruits of capitalism, and you’ll know you’re dealing with people who are deranged.
Those are the people in charge of our foreign policy and comprise the civilian leadership of our military. Just like their policy toward Syria wasn’t connected in any way to objective reality but instead intended to impress each other and the fellow travelers living in their bubble (thus creating the situation where there are no good options or US interests when there otherwise might have been), their response to Assad demonstrating that Obama’s stupid utterance about red lines had no connection to reality will in turn not be connected in any way to reality. It too will simply be designed to empress the other occupants of their bubble with how much freaking smarter they are than Bush.
So it will be another layer of stupidity piled onto their previous layers of stupidity, and can only make things worse as have all their other stupidities.
Obama has no credibility abroad; he destroyed that during his first term. The vote by the British parliament demonstrated that, but naturally these idiots are too stupid to grasp that. So when they claim that Congress has to approve force against Syria because the credibility of Obama is at stake, they won’t be capable of understanding that something has to exist to be at risk. Probably the best answer is that at least conservatives aren’t going abroad like Pelosi did trying to destroy the President’s credibility. We’re just letting Obama do that on his own.
