  2. Guarantee the wife would expect me to hear her and come running from anywhere in that fastness.

  3. Hey,
You know how some radio hosts have their group cruises and such…
I think we should have a PP group tour of Switzerland!!
No bike riding for JD while we are there. Who knows how fast he would go down a mountainside.

  5. I hope you haven’t grown a pony tail and taken up bike riding.

  6. Château de Chenonceau: Most beautiful Château in the Loire, and the Loire is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

  7. How about just mowing the lawn? The wife probably won’t see you until she is well over it.

Check out the panorama view. chateau-chenonceau

Or sweeping the sidewalk? Taking the trash to the curb would be an all day chore.

  11. I’d love to go back to Paris and the Loire, but next time I want a guide who speaks French well. Did anyone hire guides like this on their trip?

(My French is sufficiently fluent to teach sailing to french folk in l’Archipel des Glénan in France – a tad rusty now, but the accent remains strongly from-some-other-part-of-France – with thanks to the dames d’un certain âge at the Institut Francais d’Ecosse in Glasgow last millennium)

  14. Patricia: no guides. We had to make do on my listening to a couple of months of tapes. Not great but better than nothing.

  15. I liked it when I worked around a Swiss postdoc a couple of years ago back East. I told her I understood a little, since I had had three years of German in high school.

I don’t speak German,” she exclaimed, indignant.

When I got home I started to this story to a German colleague of mine. I had just started when he exclaimed “But Swiss isn’t German!,” very indignantly.

And yes, SF, German-style Swiss is just one of the four languages spoken there.

  16. Alastor, merci!

I speak enough Italian to get by, but French is just beyond me. Maybe I’ll try my tapes again, Patrick.

  17. Visited Chenonceau on my honeymoon in ’92. The way the chateau reflects in the river, I had a picture upside-down in my album for years before I noticed.

  18. Amazing. One of my favorite sights in the world. If you have a chance, drive into Saumur during sunset. The chateau there is lit up and it’s really magical.
