DoJ Seeks Tips About George Zimmerman

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:47 am

Today, the federal government is asking an entire country for “tips” about one man. Who is the focus of this intensive effort? A top outstanding Al Qaeda terrorist? Someone from the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list?

Nope. In fact, you’ll never guess who it is. Oh, you read the headline. Sneaky of you.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday afternoon appealed to civil rights groups and community leaders, nationally and in Sanford, for help investigating whether a federal criminal case might be brought against George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, one advocate said.

The DOJ has also set up a public email address to take in tips on its civil rights investigation.

Barbara Arnwine, president and executive director the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law – who earlier in the day joined calls for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, said that later in the afternoon, she joined a U.S. Department of Justice conference call to discuss the prospects.

“They were calling on us to actively refer anyone who had any information,” that might build a case against Zimmerman for either a civil rights violation or a hate crime, Arnwine said. “They said they would very aggressively investigate this case.”

The email address for tips is Sanford.florida@usdoj.gov. I’ll be writing them and I think you should write them too.

I plan to send in a tip talking about how George Zimmerman has mentored black children. I will also mention how Eric Holder and James Clapper lied under oath to Congress, in case they want to investigate real crime. I will likely send that email later today and publish it.

I encourage everyone reading to send in a similar “tip,” as it sounds like DoJ needs some help here. Copy me on your email and I’ll publish the best ones.

  1. I suspect the IT people, if not the leadership at DoJ, know what some of us are about to do and I’m sure the address will send the e-mail to a very large junk folder. But I’m going to do it anyway.

    MT Geoff (a67ef4)

  2. Presumably this will be “information” that the FBI could not garner after months of investigation, “information” that the police and prosecutors in Florida could not uncover. Dubious to be sure!

    Steven W. (9109a4)

  3. I have sent them three tips already.

Tonight, from a different email address, I will send some that will take them time to discount. Maybe a subject line: important information about George Zimmerman’s racial attitudes with a link to an article that talks about him mentoring black children. Make them earn their taxpayer dollar.

God, I’m glad I pay taxes for such worthwhile endeavors.

I want every reader of mine to send several important tips.

  4. This is unbelievable. Has anybody in the DOJ ever heard of “equal protection”?

  9. A series of stories and events (from A to Z) that make it seem like one is watching this society go through a huge car crash in slow motion.

  10. Worse kind of lynching. Sheriff not just leaving the jail unlocked and unguarded but plaiting the knot for the mob.

  11. I informed them that I have it on good authority that Zimmerman weighs less than a duck, and he turned me into a newt.

    I got better.

    Brian Epps (2f898a)

  12. The DOJ will receive a lot of dross. Millions of pages of it. It will have the manpower to sift through it for whatever may be useful in a trial. When the defense gets the millions of page pursuant to Brady it will not. Cheap, filthy but common federal prosecutor trick.

  14. Couple this with Holder’s desire to push duty to retreat, and it is clear that the divide cannot be bridged. 15. MD, it may very well be time for Zimmerman to subpoena everything the NSA has involving a cell in the scene of the incident at that time of night. A little bit of “taste of your own medicine” if nothing else.

  16. I’m going to tell them that I heard the entire Zimmerman family eats black babies. All those White Hispanics do it.

  17. Seriously, if I do, I will ask them to investigate the shooting of an unarmed young black man in his car by the Chicago police, in a Chicago suburb.

    nk (875f57)

  18. Chances are, your local or state police departments have photographs of your car in their files, noting where you were driving on a particular day, even if you never did anything wrong. Using automated scanners, law enforcement agencies across the country have amassed millions of digital records on the location and movement of every vehicle with a license plate, according to a study published Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union. Affixed to police cars, bridges or buildings, the scanners capture images of passing or parked vehicles and note their location, uploading that information into police databases. Departments keep the records for weeks or years, sometimes indefinitely.

  19. I have informed the DOJ that George Zimmerman looks suspiciously like Emmanuel Goldstein.

  21. Has anyone heard the opinions of my namesake lately? And I thought Islam was the religion of peace. Even W told me so. Of course now he and Jeb want 30 million more poor Mexicans here. What will that do to crime and incarceration rates.
Voted for Scott and Rubio but both are now dead to me.

  22. George Zimmerman does not floss after meals.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  23. This whole Zimmerman thing has been misunderstood. It never was about Zimmerman or Martin at all. They had no evidence, never did, and certainly what they put on display at the trial was at best suborned perjury.

No, it was solely to drive a wedge between blacks and everyone else, to keep them fired up and united in a wholly unnecessary (or at least misdirected) struggle for “rights” that they are made to believe are denied.

As someone who lived through the actual Civil Rights period and knows the utter sea change that happened in America between, oh, 1960 and 1970-something, I find the current atmosphere disturbing at best. There is great danger that the current generation of African-American leaders is intent on undoing most everything that was achieved, lest free and equal black citizens start thinking for themselves.

So, we have this show trial, and to keep things going we have this DoJ investigation (and they will proceed with another trial — facts aren’t important here).

All you need to ask yourselves is “Why are they lying?” and the motives become clear. Because they see power in those lies.

    Kevin M (bf8ad7)

  24. Crusty : it would only be double jeopardy if they were to try him on the same charges. If they gin up some fake civil rights violations, that’s something completely different, and it would give them that second bite at the apple they are so longing for.

  28. People forget that even MLK talked about the how the disproportionately high crime rate in the black community was a subject black people had to address.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  29. I’m as outraged and frustrated at this entire circus as anyone. But I’ve been wondering whether this entire current Justice Dept thing has more to do with calming the public than actually prosecuting Zimmerman.

I know, Holder has given us plenty of reason to distrust him, especially on these issues, and this also plays to their base big time. I’m just wondering what they are really looking to get out of this. If the people who (they have gone to great lengths to make sure) are incited by this, largely out of ignorance as to the details and even the way our justice system works, if these people are left with nothing they are more likely to romp. Race riots do not play well in suburbia. Obama probably thinks that he has to give them something.

A few meaningless DOJ threats may not serve the cause of justice or education, but they may serve the cause of expediency. People are easily manipulated if you have the right buttons installed. Maybe this is how they power down.

    Amphipolis (d3e04f)

  30. On the night of June 21, 1964 three young civil right workers, Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney, a young black man, were driving back from a trip to Philadelphia, Mississippi, where they’d spent the day encouraging blacks to register to vote.

That’s when deputy sheriff Cecil Price, who was also a KKK member, pulled them over for speeding, but he didn’t issue the driver a traffic ticket though, instead he took all three of them to jail and held them in custody while other Klan members prepared a secret burial site.

After preparations were complete, deputy Price released the three young men into the dark of night. However, they were quickly chased down and cornered at a prearranged and well secluded killing grounds hidden in the woods. There they were beaten and shot dead, then buried in the grave sites prepared in advance of the cold blooded triple murder that shook the nation that hot summer of ’64.

Eventually, a team of hundreds of FBI agents were able to solve the crime, but that’s another story entirely, and not at all like the movie Mississippi Burning.

So, if you’re still reading this comment and perhaps wondering what it’s got to do with Holder’s campaign of persecution against George Zimmerman, the first thing I thought about was how much Eric Holder reminds me of deputy Cecil Price.

  32. But I’ve been wondering whether this entire current Justice Dept thing has more to do with calming the public than actually prosecuting Zimmerman.

That has worked well so far with the just “arrest”, just “charge”, just “have a jury trial”, prosecutors–after the jury verdict–call G.Z. a murder, just lynch him, so far… (rioting just a few dozen miles from my home on the west coast). (I know–you are trying to find the silver lining here and not trying to push an agenda Amphipolis).

But it’s really not a different charge. It’s basically a manslaughter charge with a specific motive attached.

`(1) OFFENSES INVOLVING ACTUAL OR PERCEIVED RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, OR NATIONAL ORIGIN- Whoever, whether or not acting under color of law, willfully causes bodily injury to any person or, through the use of fire, a firearm, a dangerous weapon, or an explosive or incendiary device, attempts to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin of any person–
`(A) shall be imprisoned not more than 10 years, fined in accordance with this title, or both; and
`(B) shall be imprisoned for any term of years or for life, fined in accordance with this title, or both, if–
`(i) death results from the offense; or
`(ii) the offense includes kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill.

There isn’t a single element here that wasn’t addressed in the Florida murder 2/manslaughter trial. It’s absurd to suggest that just because the feds use different wording to force a retrial on all the same issues it’s not double jeopardy.

“George impressed me right off the bat as just a real go-getter,” Donnelly said. “He was working days and taking all these classes at night, passing all the insurance classes, not just for home insurance, but auto insurance and everything. He wanted to open his own office – and he did.”

    30. Comment by Amphipolis (d3e04f) — 7/17/2013 @ 8:48 am

I was doing some research ahead of a guest lecture at my alma mater and stumbled upon a forum for professors. They called these sorts of tactics “Jedi Mind Tricks,” where you essentially frame a situation to make the other person feel more in control or more in power. Remember, Patterico posted that brilliant e-book which explains the different axes of each political group. Trayvon supporters tend to feel oppressed by the “injustice” system. They apparently miss the point about the DOJ targeting people with tip lines certainly being injustice. Simply, the system is oppressing them and is racist. Everything is spun this way.

If it truly is some sort of Jedi mind trick to keep people from rioting, it is still despicable as injustice is not a good tool against perceived injustice. I too thought this might be the case when Angela Corey kept repeating in the press conference that the case was brought against Zimmerman so people could see all of the facts. I figured the hope was that people would watch the trial and understand that, in accordance with the law, there simply was no case. However, what makes Corey or Holder think that someone willing to riot and while in the process injure innocent civilians and damage property really understand the nuances of the legal system or care much about laws in the first place? Corey went on to label Zimmerman a murderer, so I doubt she really brought the case to quell the very masses the media and the Obama administration incited. Plain and simple: Trayvon supporters want Zimmerman in jail and they want to use this case as a study for racism against blacks. There may be such cases, but this is not one of them.

I took my mom out to lunch and one of her coworkers saw us and approached. She swore up and down that she watched the trial and understood all of the facts. She claimed Zimmerman was guilty and that was that. She also harped about the police targeting black people and black neighborhoods. I tried using this analogy: when I was in college, I worked with a group that offered consulting services for free to local small businesses. Restaurants that received a “B” or “C” in the past from the health department were more likely to be visited in the future due to past poor performance. If a community is the center of gang activity, drug activity, or experiences a lot of crime, it is far more likely that the police will be patrolling these areas. It makes it even more likely that the police will be making arrests within these areas. If the area is predominately one race, it follows that it is far more likely for the people of that race to be arrested more. The statistics do not account for this. Of course, she did not want to hear my analogy nor did she want to hear me explain to her how ill will was never proven. What would happen in the DOJ targeted a black man that was found not guilty? She did not want to answer this question. This is the problem when viewing through the prism of race: the only thing that matters is the color of someone’s skin rather than the nuances of the situation of which the law should be decided and often times it is hard to think of things when happening in reverse.

Obama and his administration could have taken the opportunity to quell the rioting. They could have urged respect of the court’s decision, Zimmerman, and the jury. Instead, he isn’t letting the crisis go to waste, is he? He has taken this opportunity to put pressure on states over Stand Your Ground laws as well as drum up support for anti-gun legislation. My question is: will Obama appear in a hoodie at a midterm election rally?

  115. Amphipolis may be right. The Democrats’ real agenda is Vote for Trayvon:

Don’t allow politicians who need the votes of our community to avoid addressing laws that will make this sort of profiling and murder more difficult in the future.

Hold those politicians accountable at the federal level, but more importantly at the state level where most of these laws are written. And if need be, yes, organize primary challenges to state senators and city councilmen who don’t seem to get it.

Define an agenda that starts with gun control and anti-profiling legislation and challenge politicians to sign on or get primaried. By the way, you will be surprised by how few votes you need to win most state senate races.

Regardless, here is my tip to the email addy provided:

    TWIMC,

I heard on NBC that George Zimmerman said “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black” on the night of the shooting.

NBC should be able to provide you a copy of the tape. If not check with Zimmerman’s lawyers.

Also, at Democratic Underground, they have an audio of Zimmerman on the night in question and their experts have determined that Zimmerman used the term “f**king coons” in regards to Martin. They should have a copy of this. If not, check with Chris Matthews at MSNBC.

I also hear that Zimmerman’s parents have a photo of their son at his high school prom with a young black female. Since he is a racist she most probably was his slave.

He also mentored two young black children while their father was in prison. This obviously was a ploy to get them somewhere he could gun them down but he never got a chance.

This should provide a slam-dunk case.

    Best Of Luck!

I think the Obama Administration is inflaming public opinion regarding race to mobilize the black vote for 2014. Economic conditions are terrible, especially for blacks, and I suspect the internal polls show their support for Democrats in 2014 is going soft. Stories like this generate an emotional response in blacks that hardens their support for Democrats.

In addition, Obama is desperate to solidify his core voting groups because he wants the last 2 years of his term to cement his legacy as the Hope and Change President.

Meanwhile, the Jimmy Carter swims against the tide and says the jury got it right.

But look at his reason! He’s not going against the tide. He’s saying the verdict was really wrong, but it is not the fault of the jury. It was the fault of the prosecutor, and of the law. And also the prosecutor never brought any claim of racial animosity into the courtroom. The bottom line was that people should not and would not get angry – but not that justice was served.

…the prosecution inadvertently set the standard so high that the jury had to be convinced that it was a deliberate act by Zimmerman, that he was not at all defending himself

Inadvertantly! What he’s saying there is that they charged Murder Two. But the jury also had an option of manslaughter. And the murder charge was not at all inadvertant. That’s what the myth was: that George Zimmerman followed Trayvon Martin, caught him, and murdered him.

    And he also said:

It’s not a moral question, it was a legal question, and the American law requires that the jury listen to the evidence presented. The action that was taken in the courtroom was not to bring in the race issue at all. The prosecution avoided that subject quite clearly.

Jimmy Carter mentioned the police beating of Rodney King and the 1992 Los Angeles race riots that followed and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the riots that followed, but said it would not happen this time.

I think eventually, no matter how deep the moral feelings and personal feelings might be among African Americans or others, with time passing they start seeing what can we do about the present and the future and put aside their feelings about the past. I think that’s what’s gonna happen in our country.

  164. MY EMAIL TO DOJ
Mr. Zimmerman was found not guilty in Criminal Court of Law. Despite the State Attorney, Angela Corey, falsifying his arrest warrant, a documented biased judge, the intrusion of Barack Obama, Erick Holder, and black militant leaders, Mr. Zimmerman was found Not Guilty by an impartial jury of his peers. Due to Mr. Zimmerman’s racial makeup which is black (grandfather), brown (his mother) & white (his father), to pursue Civil Rights violation is ludicrous. Additionally, Mr. Zimmerman is known to mentor black teens. The State simply failed to prove its case.

For our President & other administrators to have a “snitch” line to the DOJ is demeaning to their office and to the United States. Had anyone of them bothered to listen to Mr. Zimmerman’s call to the Sanford Police Department would have realized the following:

    1) He called the NonEmergency phone line to the Communications Center
    2) The Communications Center transferred him to 9-1-1
    3) The even toned even quietness of his voice
    a) these three points in no way indicate anger
    b) even when he called Mr. Martin a “suspect” and said “these assholes
always get away” there is in change in his attitude or tone
    c) he was unsure of race at first and “asshole” does not indicate race
    d) he only later acknowledged to 9-1-1 that unknown person was black
    4) An angry, racist man who believes they “always get away” would have:
    a) called 9-1-1
    i) hostility & anger would have been heard in the tape
ii) kept pursuing Mr. Martin after being told “we don’t need you to do that”
    b) called 9-1-1 after the action was over

The actions of Mr. Zimmerman were typical of a Neighborhood Watch Captain who had recently heard that a young black male arrested for a potentially violent home invasion was released. Mr. Zimmerman worked with that family to get adequate locks for doors and windows. The location of this apartment was close to the area Mr. Martin was walking.

There has been no indication that Mr Zimmerman is an angry racist. Thus, there is no call for asking people to call a “snitch” line on a law abiding citizen seeking to provide safety for his neighborhood.
