  4. Seriously, anytime an aparatchik is retired its a happy day. Yeah he could be replaced by a younger slack-jawed version of himself but cerebrovascular accidents are also possible.

It’s the universities full of lefty professors and students; and the Hollywood people with their chalets; and regular Montanans out stalking elks on election day; and something to do with cattlemen versus sheepherders and deeded ranches versus open range, I think.

  8. Calling ObieCare a “train wreck” probably caused the DNSC to cancel his login. NO MONEY FOR YOU!

  9. He was in a lot of trouble because of ObamaCare.

He also was not able to accomplish much in the Senate.

There apparently is not much of republican Party in Montana, and democrats running for national office somehow separate themselves from how they are going to vote.

Agreed. Even if he is replaced by Schwietzer, I won’t lament the loss of a Senate dinosaur who grew way too fat and happy in his little sinecure.

Don’t forget free coinage of silver.

  12. What are the odds that he returns to Montana to pursue a quiet life of reading/writing/ranching instead of staying in Washington DC to serve as a lobbyist in a high-power law firm? I would say it’s about 33:1 against.

  13. What are the odds Obama makes him ambassador to some armpit country? It would get rid of him and open the seat for a Democrat place holder.

  14. You know, I’ve always wondered about that provision of the Constitution. It seems to me that the several States can constitutionally issue coinage of gold and silver as legal tender. Emphasis on legal tender. It would be an unworkable mess, for all practical purposes, bu they could if they wanted to.

Maybe, but don’t ambassadorships usually go to rich folks who just want to fart around in an exotic embassy for a few years? Without knowing his actual financial status, I would expect that Baucus wants to exploit his connections to make some serious lettuce as a lobbyist.

  17. Six terms is long enough.
Let the people of MT decide whether they want to continue down the path Max set them upon, or whether now is the time to try a new direction, with a Senator from a different party – though there is always the possibility they could elect another Dem who is a complete LW nutcase.

There was a note in the Politico story that he and his wife are in the process of building their “dream” house outside of Bozeman.
Maybe he has had enough of The Swamp.

I don’t know, there are a lot of Washington types who spend most of the year living in the Beltway with various long weekends and vacation stays in their “real” home. The Tom Daschles, Bob Doles, Newt Gingriches, and George Mitchells of the world probably still have nice homes in their old states, despite spending most of the year in Washington.

    I love nymphing Montana waters.
