Patterico's Pontifications

State Senator Sponsoring Bill to Fight SWATting . . . Well, Just Guess What Happened to Him

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:26 pm

A California state senator who has been pushing a bill to (marginally) increase penalties for SWATting . . . you guessed it: has been SWATted:

Senator Ted Lieu was swatted earlier today … police responded to a 911 call claiming he had shot his wife inside their Torrance, Calif., home … law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Lieu tells TMZ … he was out of town, his wife was home sick and the kids were at school. He vows he’s more determined than ever to squash the swatters.

Here’s a list of people SWATted: Ted Lieu; Erik Rush; Ryan Seacrest; Russell Brand; Selena Gomez; Justin Timberlake; Rihanna; Sean Combs; Chris Brown; Tom Cruise; Paris Hilton; Clint Eastwood; Brian Krebs; the Jenners and Kardashians; Justin Bieber; Miley Cyrus; Ashton Kutcher; Simon Cowell; Aaron Walker; Erick Erickson; Mike Stack; and me.

  1. That’s 22 incidents.

Not all necessarily done by the same people.

  2. Interesting to me that someone would do this to someone writing the law. Maybe some arrogant SOB with a penchant for dark humor that never did it before.
If one was in the habit of using this to intimidate, I wouldn’t think one would want to rile someone up.

  3. Watch this go through committee on unanimous votes now.

  4. No, it’s like you have a drug dealer in the area, bringing in unsavory elements at all hours of the day and night. You could call the cops for a one off, because cops are busy people and they aren’t going to stick around waiting for a crime, or you could shine a bring spot light on them that everybody notices. Say by making up a batch of little plastic baggies with a residue of talcum in each, then distributing them across a wide swath of your target’s neighborhood.

  6. What?? Are you serious??

  7. Auntie fraud,

Are you talking about something separate from the SWATting described in the post??

  8. The only thing I see online is the swatting story. Here are the results for “Lieu” at ABC7, but maybe the story is too recent to be online yet.

  9. Auntie fraud is not a troll, but I have to imagine he is just confused or something.

  10. abc7 just now put up a story elaborating on today’s SWATting. I think Auntie fraud is just referring to that.

  11. No he’s talking about the same incident.
The ABC 7 Twitter feed just commented a few minutes ago on the original story.

    Here’s their version

  12. Right, when Aaron tweeted it as “breaking” news just now, it was then clear to me that the ABC7 story had just gone up, even though it’s been news for hours.
