BREAKING NEWS: BOSTON TV STATION CLAIM: One Marathon Bomber Suspect Dead; Manhunt Underway for Second

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 2:55 am

I fell asleep listening to local Boston news coverage of the incredible events of last night: a fatal shooting of an MIT police officer, a shootout with police, reports of a explosives being thrown out of car windows, a bag of grenades on the ground, and confusion regarding who had been taken into custody. I did a post last night about these events, and as soon as I heard details about explosives being thrown, I raised a question of whether the Marathon bombers were behind all this mayhem.

It appears they were indeed.

The live feed of the local TV station was still on in headphones stuck in my ears when I awoke just now to news that one of the Marathon bombers is dead and there is an intense manhunt for the second. It’s not quite 3 a.m. here but I feel compelled to type up a quick post noting this stunning development.

Now how am I supposed to try to get back to sleep?

UPDATE 3:23 a.m.: There are reports circulating about that purport to provide the names of a couple of suspects, but I would be very reluctant to believe any such report without official confirmation. For example, I see a blog post in the Green Room at Hot Air that states that one of the suspects is a missing Brown University student. But that is being contradicted by other reports.

We’ve been suckered by an incompetent media too many times in the past several days. Be skeptical.

Here is a fairly restrained video report from WSJ.com summarizing what we know.

Weird to break this kind of thing before Drudge!

Now I am going to try to sleep, and will probably fail.

UPDATE x2 3:45 a.m.: Sleep FAIL. AP reporting: “Boston bomb suspects from Russia region near Chechnya, lived in US at least 1 year.”

UPDATE x3 3:52 a.m.: BREAKING: AP: Surviving Boston bomb suspect identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass.

Supposedly the dead suspect is his brother.

Have to say also strong odor that law enforcement weas stopped from telling us who these guys were earlier this week because of PC nonsense from on high. Or at least until The One could have his bullshit interfaith speech. Said speech was such bland meandering nothingness at a loss why he bothered. There is at least one police officer dead this morning, and perhaps because law enforcemens was worried about being described as “acting stupidly” because of Obama’s PC crap.

  21. My post at 15 was almost a joke, and yet it’s clear looking around the interent it’s true. The Left in this country cannot get it through their heads that these Islamic nuts hate us and wish to kill us all.I speak for self, but many of us on the right readily acknowledge the wars were ghastly mistakes, but still realize the Islamic terrorists need to be stopped or at least kept out of our country. The Left really believe their biggest problem is other Americans who disagree with them rather than Muslims who want to kill us all.And it’s true msot of all of our President. Scary.

    narciso (3fec35)

  23. As per their uncles, who lives in AMryland, the older one was “into Islam”. Chechnya has been a breeding ground for Muslim terrorists. Recall the school attack in Russia a few years back. Putin may have cooked up the apartment bbomings to build his power and blamed it on Chechnyan Islamists. But doens’t change the fact there is a history of Chenchnyan Islamists committing atrocities in the name of the false Arab rock god Allah.

    Bugg (b32862)

  24. I wonder what the stir was all about regarding the Middle-Eastern looking guys, certainly the one who has been reportedly singled out for deportation? The likely bombers now appear to, on one hand, fit the MO (ie, their belief system), yet, on the other hand, also add a new wrinkle (ie, their nationality) to the most obvious suspects in such an act of terrorism.

Now the next question is did they act totally alone or had accomplices right there at the scene of the marathon or ties to a wider Islamo-fascist terror network?

  25. I don’t necessarily think the Saudi angle is related to the Boston bombs, but it’s possible they got some assistance or encouragement from other Sunni muslims. The one kid had a youtube account with a channel devoted to “terrorists”. There is a little even right now to suggest participation in religious networks. THere’s the argument with the Shiite, the remark of one that he’d rather contend for the US than Russia (although context is missing for that, and it might apply to an athletic contest and not a cultural one).

Son the detective says it is not uncommon that when you put a searchlight on somebody during an investigation that you may find something even if unrelated to the original crime being investigated.
So it could be simply that the person did overstay a visa or some such and nothing more and was just caught up in this investigation.
On the other hand, is such supposed to be a confidential procedure, or public information, and if the latter, why not more info.

    Q. Was the shrapnel from a recent explosions during the car chase or could it have come from the initial Boston Marathon event?

    Q. If black hat’s shrapnel wounds are fresh, could it be that suspect #2, white hat, was also similarly wounded during the gunfight and explosive detonations following the car hijacking?

#2 is on the run, I wonder if he may also be wounded by either police bullets or by shrapnel from his own homemade IEDs. The hijacked SUV is reported to be riddled with bullet holes.

I have a clue about an angle Journolisty folks will be trying: Expressed surprise that Chechens would do this, as Americans are in natural sympathy with their cause!, followed by endless discussions of the Chechen rebel cause; and maybe even stresses on how little it has to do with Islam per se. Which is actually backwards (Islamism really very tied up with the geopolitical/cultural conflict).

Yeah. Check out Tanny O’Haley’s comment @ 31. They also did the Moscow Theater takeover in 2002. They took 850 hostages. 130 hostages died, but that’s mostly because Spetsnaz kills first, asks questions later.

It’s only western countries like the US, Britain, Israel, etc., that thinks a hostage rescue is only successful if only the hostage takers are killed. Most of the rest of the world’s forces don’t train to that level of precision. They think it’s a successful response if all the killing is confined to the site in question and they get all the terrorists.

  45. Interesting commentary by Beck. Either he has something very big or is “Jumping the shark” and about to destroy his credibility with the more objective.

He states that multiple Congressional offices have confirmed what he has said about the hospitalized Saudi national who is going to be deported because he is a “national security risk linked to the Boston Marathon bombing”
    – He also says sources know who met “unofficially” with the president and that he is a “very, very, very bad man” linked with the Saudi’s
    – BUT, rather than say who it is today, they are going to give “them” (the govt/WH) until Monday to come out with the info themselves, “because that would be better than having the press break the story”

So, expect a story from the WH, or from Beck and others on Mon, or that Beck’s credibility takes a huge dive

That’s the whole point of PC, Icy. To make sure no one concludes the obvious. And if they do, make sure they don’t dare say it in public.

It’s why when black kids are suspected of committing a crime (I hate saying suspected when I’m talking about crimes committed while actually on a subway or business security camera) the media dares not identify them by skin color. Their just “youths,” like Muslim rioters in France. And it’s why George Zimmerman is a “racist” for providing an accurate description of Trayvon Martin when the dispatcher asked him to.

  53. The uncle also said (earlier) that the older brother had called him about 7 pm last night. He said he loved him and was sorry. Not sorry for the bombings, which he did not let on he had done, but for whatever caused them to break off contact about 2 years ago.

Breaking off contact with members of the family and friends is exactly what a new Al Qaeda recruit is told to do.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  54. The uncle asked the older brother what he was doing, and he said he fixed cars, and had gotten married and had a baby.

Many people knew the younger brother from high school, Cambridge Latin, but they graduated in 2011. Many people also knew him from the street where they discussed sports and things.

One person interviewed on Fox who was maybe about two years older than the younger one, said that he last saw him at least 8 months ago. There was nothing different about him.

Several people noticed his resemblance to the picture but nobody believed it. The friend from the street, who knew him since 2009 when he (the friend) graduated from high school, said he joked about it being him. A girl, a former classmate, said she noticed it and checked his Facebook page – and found it had been deleted and that was weird (she didn’t use that word)

  56. At least three things clearly point to Al Qaeda:

    1) The pressure cooker.

    2) The fact that they had a lot of small bombs with them, in their car which they threw like grenades. The London plotters had similar bombs.

    3) The fact that they seem to have cut off contact with their family and friends a year to two years ago.

Probably the older brother first. After a year maybe he recruoted his yoiungere brother.

This is all clearly tied into something bigger.

  58. They immigrated to the United States either in 2002 or 2003. They came with their uncle or to their uncle. Their father is still in Russia – may be a Russian, not Checnyan at all. Their father still praises his son or sons – he said the younger one was a medical student. Which he couldn’t be, being a sophomore in college at most. You could think he waa a pre-med student, but more likely, on al Qaeda instructions, he simply lied to his father, who didn’t know anything about the American educational system.

The younger brother spoke perfect English. You wouldn’t be able to tell he was of foreign origin at all.

What is it with Mass.? Two flights on 9-11 came out of Mass..

Could be maybe there is a cell or something there, but I think the airplanes took off from Boston because to hijack an airplane and crash it into the World Trade Center it had to take off from another city. The 9/11 conspirators didn’t spend any time at all in New York City. Maybe they were afraid the police were too alert.

Also on September 11th, to start a fire opr make it boigger the plane had to be loaded with fuel – therefore crosscountry flight originating from the East Coast.

  67. Chechnyans were one of the biggest components of Al Qaeda.

    For instance:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/23/world/pakistani-offensive-aims-to-drive-out-taliban-and-al-qaeda.html

Muhammad Azam Khan, the top Pakistan government official in the South Waziristan tribal agency, said he had requested a steep increase in the number of Pakistani troops in the area — to 12,000 from 4,000. Hundreds of Qaeda members, including Chechen and Uzbek fighters, are thought to be hiding in the border area and mounting attacks on American forces in nearby Afghanistan.

I could find many other quotes indicating the coinnection to Chechnya.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/04/19/ties-between-islamic-extremist-groups-and-chechnya-well-documented/

But congressional researchers and foreign policy analysts have long tracked a connection between the Chechnya region and Islamic extremists with Al Qaeda and the Taliban. If the suspects are indeed Chechen, analysts told Fox News they may represent part of a jihadi network which has made its way to American soil.

“The Chechen jihadi network is very extensive,” Middle East analyst Walid Phares said Friday. “They have a huge network inside Russia and Chechnya.”

    And there’s even this:

  68. Steve57, it’s more than just ‘being PC’. On Day 1 there were several high-profile toolbots on the left that were spinning out theories of right-wing survivalist, anti-government, anti-IRS militia types being responsible for the bombing. These people weren’t trying to placate the Muslim community or insulate or defend them from anti-Islamist rhetoric; they were using this horrific incident as an excuse for attacking their political enemies, plain and simple.

  71. Another clue that the father isn’t Russian. The younger brother’s name is Tsarni. That’s not a Russian last name.

The two perps are going by the name Tsarnaev. That’s simply a russified version of the non-Russian name.

The Soviets often forced ethnic minorities to russify their names to force assimilation. (But then they gave these minorities their own republics like Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan to create the illusion that the USSR was really an actual Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Which is one of the things that led to the break-up of the USSR. On the one hand they tried to force these minorities to assimilate. On the other, the Soviets made it clear to them that they weren’t Russians after all and they began to demand more autonomy as a result.)

I guess it’s the same kind of surprise that they did a robbery.

Publicizinmg their pictures worked faster than expected, but it didn’t work out too well. It did cause them to run, and abandon a lot of ordnance, but they didn’t only hide.

Or perhaps they thought the MIT cop had figured out who they were? The first reports him noticing somebody suspicious. Later that he interfered in a robbery. Now, he was shot in his car.

I think some news outlets have the chronology but I didn’t manage to get it yet.

Some news outlets are behind outlets on various developments.

  77. 78. The Georgians are Christian, though. Abnd don’t they have a separate language?

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  78. Maybe somebody can clarify things for me.

    I heard:

There was a robbery at a gasoline station. And a gasoline station gave the FBI a better picture. And/or the robbery was at a convenience store.

And there was a carjacking. The carjackers left the driver off the car off at a 7-11.

At some point somehow they wound up getting chased. They were chased into Watertown. No knwoledge iif whether they had anybody there. During the chase they kept throwing biombs out.

In a shootout one of them was killed. The other escaped. He drove off in the carjacked car over his brother’s body and went about 5 blocks and got out, and ran. Or were there two carjacked cars?

Watertown was into lockdown. The various police are/were trying to be very careful what they were doing trying to avoid anybody else getting shot. What happened, the way things played out after the pictures were released, was a disaster.

They raided the Cambridge apartment and found lots of ordnance and took out a woman.

I also heard live at about 8:30 eastern time they seem to have arrested somene in Watertown. But it looks like that was somebiody else.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  79. Isn’t Chechen the Russian word for Conservative or Tea Partier?

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  80. After first stopping all mass transit and traffic in Watertown they extended that to the city of Boston. they even stopped trains heading toward Providence, Rhode Island, and one heading toward New York.

They had no idea where the second man was – or possibly they are looking for some other people who they are not naming hoping to avoid a shootout and worse. You got the feeling that maybe the other man escaped. But that nobody wanted even to raise that possibility!

They later began evacuating some residents and the whole appearance was that he was being cornered. They latewre aked the news media not to reveal where they were working. Cell phone service also was jammed.

They were looking – maybe he is hiding under a car or on top of a truck. Actually another thought is he could be badly wounded.

    Sammy Finkelman (d22d64)

  81. First the two were identified – the reporters wanted to be cautious – as Chechnyians. Later as brothers and their names were released.

At first they didn’t have the correct age for the older brother. At first it was 20 and 19 – later 26 and 19.

26 is too old to have been named after the first first president of breakaway Chechnya – it’s just a traditional Chechnyan name, as is Tamerlan (which no Russian would use)

26 years old means born in 1986 or 1987. The Soviet Union broke up at the end of 1991.

At first I thought there must be some family connection to al Qaeda. CVould still be but probably not immediate family. It probably came through soem mosque. People who don’t know that much about their religion, and now want to return to their religious roots are prime al Qaeda recruiting targets.

Yes, Sammy, the Georgians are predominantly Christians. So are the Armenians. Of the three former Soviet republics in the Caucasus, only Azerbaijan is predominantly Muslim.

And yes, Georgia has a separate language. That’s why I said Chechen and Georgian are related. Not identical.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  88. This morning on NPR they were scratching their heads in puzzlement as to why a pair of Chechens would want to do this. Over and over again, they stressed how we have no clue about their motive. They even had some terrorism “expert” on and asked him for confirmation that there’s little overlap between Chechens and al Qaeda; he said there actually was, but they let that slip by without comment, and got him to say that there were no “formal relationships”, as if that were a thing al Qaeda did. And as if in the absence of a formal oath of fealty to aQ it’s not jihadi, and can’t be related to any wider picture.

Of course if it had been some white guy with a copy of “Report from the Iron Mountain” in his apartment then it would have been obvious that he was part of a panoramic picture that includes Sarah Palin and Rand Paul.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._D._Tippit

It’s more similar than I thought. I had thought Tippit had confronted Oswald in the theater.

Tippit, it says, was also shot in his car. Except the MIT policeman was shot with multiple bullets to the head. Tippit had three bullets to the chest followed up by one to the head. Guns contained fewer bullets then.

They fired tear gas and set the cabin he was in on fire.

Suspect #2 Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (white hat) seems to be in similar straights and may well opt for a similar escape plan.

He is being pursued now as if he were Lee Harvey Oswald and had just shot the president.

The only thing he can try to do now is to disguise himself, and that won’t work. Unless he has help. Maybe somebody picked him up in a car. He may be outside the perimeter where they think he is. Or he may be dead, and they didn’t find him. If he could be dead and they didn’t find him, I suppose he could also be alive, but that’s harder..

According to reporting by NBC News, the deceased Tsarnaev sibling became a naturalized US citizen on September 11, 2012 – the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

    and this:

The 26-year-old had a profile on YouTube channel since August 2012. Five months ago, Tamerlan created a playlist dedicated to terrorism.

Named simply ‘Terrorists,’ the playlist included a pair of videos, which are now no longer available.

Although most of the clips in the channel are ordinary music videos, Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s YouTube channel shows signs that he had been drawn to radical Islamism.

Among the songs on his playlists was one called ‘I will dedicate my life to Jihad.’ He also featured videos recorded by recent converts to Islam.

    and this:

Both he and his brothers are believed to have military experience. NBC News learned that counterterrorism officials were examining possible links between them and the Islamic Jihad Union of central Asia.

    DRJ (a83b8b)

NBC 4 New York reported Friday that Tamerlan Tsarnaev flew in and out of John F. Kennedy Airport last year and spent six months out of the country, raising the possibility that he may have received terror training abroad.

Travel records obtained by the station show that the 26-year-old left New York January 12, 2012, en route to Moscow. He returned to JFK July 17.

US car theft rings probed for ties to Iraq bombings

By Bryan Bender, Globe Staff | October 2, 2005

WASHINGTON — The FBI’s counterterrorism unit has launched a broad investigation of US-based theft rings after discovering that some of the vehicles used in deadly car bombings in Iraq, including attacks that killed US troops and Iraqi civilians, were probably stolen in the United States, according to senior government officials.

Inspector John E. Lewis, deputy assistant director of the FBI for counterterrorism, told the Globe that the investigation hasn’t yielded any evidence that the vehicles were stolen specifically for car bombings. But there is evidence, he said, that the cars were smuggled from the United States as part of a widespread criminal network that includes terrorists and insurgents.

There might be a link there.

To me, it’s not reasonable that he’s out blabbing and giving interviews, etc. If he’s really the uncle of the murderers and if he really loves this country, would he not be in protective custody while being steamed for absolutely everything–every tiny factoid– he knows about these two and other family members here and abroad?

The uncle knows nothing. What he did do now, probably at the urging of officials, is ask his nephew to surrender.

I’m glad you realized that. I was going to point that out.

Doesn’t it make everyone feel good that the liberals want to expand what’s “wacko” to include everyone who’s ever been prescribed anxiety medicine so they can take their guns (as is going in NY now due to Cuomo’s NYSAFE Act) or a vet with PTSD?

We can generalize about them; they’re all effin’ loons.

But we can’t generalize about Muslims. As if Islam weren’t also a political ideology.

By the way, PTSD shouldn’t be classified a disorder. Not having PTSD should be a disorder. All PTSD is is a change in your worldview. Yeah, they are really out to kill you.

Lots of people at that Boston Marathon now have PTSD. And guess, what? They’re right. There are people out to kill you. It’s been the normal human condition for, really, 100% of our existence. It’s the people who think that’s all in the past who are delusional.

  196. America’s Patriotic Assimilation System is Broken.

There are different types of assimilation or integration. For example, economic assimilation
means the immigrant does well materially buys a home and contributes to the productive
economy. Different forms of assimilation are necessary (e.g. linguistic learning English) but not sufficient. The type of assimilation that ultimately matters most of all is patriotic assimilation: this means first and foremost political loyalty and emotional attachment to the United States.
No doubt assimilation or integration is occurring in some form today. But the question is: what
type of assimilation is it? Patriotic or multicultural?
In a Wall Street Journal column on March 30, 2006, Peggy Noonan wrote: “We are not assimilating our immigrants patriotically now. We are assimilating them culturally.

I would just change that to attachment to the principles of our founding.

As I have said, the older one wrote to a prof who taught Chechen history (probably aggressor v. victim, as usual). As a worker in higher ed, I know kids are taught to romanticize their ethnicity’s past. Aztecs, for instance, did not engage in mass killing. It goes on…

The students from Vietnam and Eastern Europe are the vociferous opponents of this blather. Uncle Ruslan gets it too. They lived in agony and they love their freedom this country offers.

    Patricia (be0117)

  198. In a Wall Street Journal column on March 30, 2006, Peggy Noonan wrote: “We are not assimilating our immigrants patriotically now. We are assimilating them culturally.”

I forget where I read it, but the president of Chechnya while sending his condolences also pointed out that we Americans can’t blame Chechnya for this. Chechnya didn’t radicalize these two. They were raised here, so we should (paraphrasing) “look to ourselves for the root of this evil.”

Whatever his faults are, he’s right.

We’re not assimilating our immigrants patriotically? We’re not even assimilating our own kids patriotically.

That’s what happens when you turn over their education to the America-hating communists in the NEA. Why shouldn’t a couple of Chechen refugees come out of our educational system hating the US as much as the Occupy! crowd.

Case in point: in Waiting for Superman, a teacher tells a little girl that the Indians respected the Earth and took care of it until the settlers came, and they destroyed it. This was not remarked upon by anyone but me. It’s a lie, but it’s a lie with a purpose. It was shocking.

    Patricia (be0117)

  201. There are number of errors I have to correct, and other things where additional information makes things make more sense. I learned of all sorts of errors and additional information just in the 6pm to 7pm hour of Friday: (Ill add also some other things I learned)

    1. The armed robbery has nothing to do with the bombers (if that was one) So I was right that didn’t fit.

They did have guns, but a robbery of course would draw attention.

    2. It was different uncle than Ruslan who was called by Tamerlan Wednesday night. Tamerlan called Ruslan an infidel in 2009. That’s when they broke off contact.. the other uncle continued to pray and they even prayed on the phone maybe. Regular 5 times of day prayer is one of the 5 things that keeps a Moslem in good standing. Fasting on Ramadan is another. Sayinmg there is one God and Mohammed is his prophet is another. I don’t remember the other two.

    3. A foreign intelligence agency had asked for the FBI to interview Tamerlin in 2011 – probably Russia. (this is the subject of a post by Patterico)

The FBI did probably checked againmst databases,
and interviewed him – determined he was no threat.

After the bomb he was so low on the radar screen not come to attention. Mother says the whole thing
is a set-up been followed for 5 years. (Sunday: the mother has since been taken to a hospital and the father is said to have had a seizure) Both father aand mother are now in Dagestan.

    Sammy Finkelman (6f9f42)

  202. The CBS Evening News Friday had them going to Kyrgystan before 1986 – but that’s before
the trouble. The Satyurday newspaper explained this – people still haven’t caught on.

In 1943, Stalin deported the Chechnyans to
Kyrgyzstan, then of course the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic. This was possibly the first of anumber of deportations of ethnic minorities that Stalin did during World War II. His advisers probably had explained Hitler’s murdering of the Jews as a security measure, and Stalin decided to imitate it but do something last drastic. In the 1950’s after Stalins death the Chechnyans were allowed to go back and most dead but some stayed includinmg the family of father. At the end of 1991 the only way for Yeltsin to get easily rid of Gorbachev was for every “republic” to secede, and they did and all the separate SSrs became indepdent countries. This probably mad ethe situation of Chechnians in Kyrgyzstan less comfortable and his father moved to Dagestan, where his wife was from. Dagestan (and Chechnya as well) had not been made into SSRs by Stalin but only Republics within Russia and so they did not become independent countries.

It’s little decisions by Stalin and maybe Khrushchev that caused all kinds of problemsd. Khrushchev in 1954 transferred the Crimea from Russia to the Ukraine so there’s a whole issue there. None of this made a bit of difference before 1991, or almost none.

The family may have moved back to Kyrgyzstan and then again maybe to Dagestan. They never were in Chechnya.

    Sammy Finkelman (6f9f42)

  203. The younger son came to the US with his parents in Sep 2002 – when he would have been 9 maybe 8 but they keep on giving younger ages. The older son came with his two sisters in 2003. The younger son (which means probably the entire family or those under 18) got asylum in Feb 2007.

That means they probably came her on a vistor’s visa and then asked for asylum. that would explain also only some of the family going at first – it’s easier to obtain a visa if it’s not the entire family goimng. An aunt was here maybe more.

The aunt is not being mentioned now, but there is now an uncle in Maryland who used to live in Massachusetts until 2005, and another uncle also in Maryland and an aunt in Canada.

And one sister of the brothers’ s now lives in West New York, New Jersey http://www.westnewyorknj.org and the FBI came and took her computer Probably becauzse she used to communicate with her brother and they are trying to get all his e-mails, probably e-mail addresses and so on.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev became a citizen on Sept 11, 2012. It was probably scheduled that way deliberately. 2012 would be after the minimum 5 years since obtaining permanent residence.

Dzhokhar did not speak with an accent at all – this could mean his parents arranged for English teachers while he was still in Russia. Tamerlan spoke with a Russian accent. Tamerlan could not get citizenship because of the domestic violence issue. If he waited a number of years after that, and there was no bad character to report in the previous 5 years or whatever he probably could have.

    Sammy Finkelman (6f9f42)

  204. It was the grandson of the Chechen chief Shamil. who headed the Northern Caucasus Republic, which had given Stalin some trouble at the outset, some of whom, defected to the Nazis, during the War, also said Shamil, ran a network out of Munich after the war, into the Caucasus.

  205. Dzhokhar’s father was probably more correct than we think about his son studying to be a doctor.

It was not pre-med, but he was studying nursing (it is reported)

Now in Russia there exists a lower category of doctor called a feldshur, which is often nowadays compared to a nurse.

I first heard of a feldshur in 1979 when I was reading a “biography” and diary of someone born in 1869 in Russia that was in Yiddish. Thsi dates back before the 1917 and I later foudn out this still exists.

  206. 213. I found:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountainous_Republic_of_the_Northern_Caucasus

The Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus (MRNC; also known as the Mountain Republic or the Republic of the Mountaineers; 1917–1920) was a short-lived state situated in the Northern Caucasus. It included most of the territory of the former Terek Oblast and Dagestan Oblast of the Russian Empire,[citation needed] which now form the republics of Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia–Alania, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan and part of Stavropol Krai of the Russian Federation.

So we see noobody then was contemplating the precise republics that they were after 1991.

That wasn’t in the time of Stalin – that belongs to the oeriod of Lenin and the Russian Civil War. It’s all much more obscure and little known than it should be.

    Wikipedia says:

The main founders of the MRNC included[citation needed] Said Shamil (grandson of Imam Shamil, who in 1924 would become a founder and leader of the “Committee of Independence of the Caucasus” in Germany…

Interestingly, the Weimar Republic also co-operated militarily with the Soviet Union – training or some other stuff they couldn’t do openly took place there.

Imam Shamil was born in 1797 and lived to 1871.

    Sammy Finkelman (6f9f42)

  207. the younger Shamil was also running a network into Russia after 1945 (or 1948 or whenever it started?)
