Patterico's Pontifications

Name the Party

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:23 am

What party are these people from?

Example 1:

A former mayor of San Diego spent the last decade wagering more than a billion dollars at casinos across the country, eventually liquidating her savings, auctioning her belongings, selling off real estate, borrowing from friends and taking more than $2 million from a charity set up by her late husband, a fast-food tycoon.

The former mayor, Maureen O’Connor, 66, blamed an addiction to gambling aggravated by a brain tumor for the gargantuan spree. Her lawyers said that while she had made well over a billion dollars in bets at casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and San Diego, her actual net losses were around $13 million.

Federal prosecutors said it was impossible to know precisely how much Ms. O’Connor had lost over those years, but she emerged with her fortune gone and her health shattered. She took out second and third mortgages on her La Jolla, Calif., home to pay for the gambling.

Hint: the New York Times never says.

Hint #2: the New York Times article has the following sappy passage about how poor Ms. O’Connor once ate hamburger for Thanksgiving as a child, before marrying into $40-50 million of wealth:

Ms. O’Connor came from a working-class family in San Diego, one of 13 children of a part-time bookie. When she was a child her family was once so poor that her parents could not afford turkey on Thanksgiving and instead molded a bird out of hamburger meat, she once said in an interview.

If you guessed Democrat, you get the prize.

Example 2:

The Tennessee congressman embroiled in a mini-scandal today for sending, then deleting, sappy Twitter messages to a 24-year-old Texas State University student says the woman is his secret daughter.

New York Magazine reported this morning that the Sunlight Foundation, a nonprofit organization that advocates for transparency in politics, had captured images of U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen’s deleted messages to the woman including one that read, “Happy Valentines beautiful girl. [I love you].”

In a different exchange, the congressman tweeted to Brink: “miss u/wil call later _ -give me a good time”

The tender tone of the messages set media tongues wagging. A number of news outlets, including the San Marcos Mercury, described the messages as “flirty” — or worse. The conservative political blog, Red State, ran a story under the headline, “Is Steve Cohen schtupping his buddy’s daughter?”

Now NBC reporter Luke Russert and others are reporting that U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen is saying that Victoria Brink, who apparently attends Texas State’s fashion merchandising program, is his daughter. When news of the intimate exchanges spilled into the news cycle Thursday morning, Cohen’s spokesman initially said that Brink was the daughter of an old family friend.

The article ends with no mention of the Congressman’s party.

Then there is an update. Then there is another update. Then there is something called “earlier” with six tweets showing the news when it broke. If you keep scrolling and scrolling, eventually, at the very last tweet, you run across something that says the guy’s party.

But you had already guessed this one as well, hadn’t you?

Thanks to Milhouse and another tipster.

  3. Permit me to doubt. I’m not buying Cohen’s story, not for a NY nanosecond – miss u/wil call later_-give me a good time just ain’t how a normal man talks to his daughter, let alone a sitting Congressman.

I’d be interested in hearing from John Edwards and Anthony Wiener if they weren’t layin’ low. Perhaps it’ll take the National Enquirer to do the job of the willfully uninterested kneepad media and actually look into the details of Congressman Cohen’s taxpayer funded expense account. Yeah, right.

How can we stand around discussing a Democrat Mayor’s multi-million dollar gambling debts when a brilliant Republican of Cuban heritage took a drink of water during a speech ?

Granted, it’s not a surprise that a Democrat is gambling with the future, but still, this whole drinking bottled water thing is almost as bad as Teddy Kennedy driving his Oldsmobile into a bay and leaving a woman to drown.

  6. Oh lookee! Here’s another one. You can search far and wide in this article and still will not be able to read for which party JJJ served as congressman.

Formal charges against Jesse Jackson Jr. could be filed as soon as Friday and Tuesday at the latest. His plea has also implicated his wife, leading to tax fraud charges against her.

The filing at the U.S District Courthouse in Washington will not require a court appearance by either Jackson… Jesse Jackson Jr. will plead guilty to one felony count of misuse of campaign funds and then let a federal judge determine his punishment…..could range from probation to five years in prison.

Jackson’s deal calls for him to repay hundreds of thousands of dollars spent for things like travel and meals with a mistress and a $40,000 men’s Rolex watch he bought for himself. Jackson’s resignation from Congress was also part of the deal.

The congressman’s guilty plea says Sandi knew about improper purchases that apparently include breakfast snacks, cosmetic services, even beds purchased for campaign workers. ….Sandi Jackson is expected to accept responsibility for some things because, as the congressman’s campaign manager, she signed the tax returns.

There. Fixed it for you to match the MSM news and commentary coverage (is there even a difference anymore?).

  9. In all fairness, mayoral offices are non-partisan in California — While we all know whether someone is more conservative or more liberal, local politicians don’t run “as a Democrat” or “as a Republican” here in San Diego, so it’s less valid in the first case.

  10. Shows how much society has changed. Sixty years ago, Rep. Cohen would have told everyone that the young coed was his niece. Now he feels free to pretend that she is his illegitimate love child. Yay progress!

  13. Was she non-partisan or a Dem?

Wikipedia, which has never been wrong and is the source of all knowledge, calls her a Democratic politician. She defeated Roger Hedgecock for the San Diego mayoral race, and Hedgecock is a staunch conservative. Even if the SD mayor office is officially nonpartisan, I would assume that “Her Honor” was an ally of Jerry Brown, Gray Davis, and other California Democrats during her term.

  14. Steve Cohen is a very unusual Congressman. He’s white, but represents a district that was drawn to elect a black person.

Maybe I could find a better source, but then maybe I should use this actually:

Are the voters from Steve Cohen’s district (which is majority black) less represented because he is not black? He even asked for membership in the CBC, but was rejected.

  15. In San Diego, they always thought well of Mo, even though she turned out to be another Looney Leftist.
Perhaps as a teen she hung around the family-bar too much.

In the 80’s she had a lot of promise, but the state wasn’t to her level of crazy yet – we were just getting over the first two terms of Moonbeam.

No telling what would have happened to her if she hadn’t married Peterson.

Mo is, and always was, a Dem.
And, when she defeated Roger, Roger was a Moderate (he billed himself as a Progressive Republican), as he hadn’t been bitten by the J David scandal yet.
After being found guilty of a felony, and stripped of his office, he “found religion” as a conservative radio host.

  17. Dirty Old Man Rule: if a politician isn’t identified in the first three lines as a Republican, you can safely assume he (she?) is a Democrat.

  18. JCC #9,

Come on, man, the discussion is not about how the Mayor governed San Diego in the context of the political spectrum, rather, the discussion is about how the lamestream media bend over backwards to bury a troubled Democrat’s party affiliation.

What exactly are you ‘just saying’?

The ‘name that party’ meme holds that journalists will highlight republican party membership when it pertains to a jackass, but neglect to mention or mention way below the fold any democrat party membership when it pertains to a jackass.

Your rebuttal suggests you’re not familiar with this well worn meme.

    Dustin (73fead)

  23. I see happyfeet already responded to tifosa.

So in his example, the GOP membership is in the headline. VS in our example where democrat membership is not considered relevant to the story.

    That’s called bias, tifosa.

    Dustin (73fead)

  24. tifosa,

You’re an idiot…and you don’t even have the dignity to thank any of us for paying for your food stamps.

When Republican elected officials get caught doing bad things, their party affiliation is always mentioned up front, so as to facillitate maximum embarrassment and damage to the GOP name brand.

However, when a Democrat gets caught doing something bad or illegal, the mainstream media often buries the party affiliation in the 23rd paragraph on page 26, or they don’t even mention it all.

What is it with you brain-dead mooching lefties who cannot grasp such a basic concept ?
