  2. Half think the GOP would be best-served by allowing Hagel to skate into the SecDef office and letting incompetence and hilarity ensue.The President should be entitles to the nominees of his choice, and in this case, the bigger the arsehole the better for us all.

  5. Last night on the PBS newshour there was a discussion on the politics and reality of Hagel’s predicament. The panel agreed with Allahpundit that Hagel will ultimately (barely) squeak in, but opined he will be so damaged by then that one wonders if it really will end up being a victory for him and the WH. Once Judy Woodruff had gotten past her biased “why are recalcitrant boneheaded evil Republicans holding up this approval of one of their own and in the middle of a war fer goodness sakes?”, the panelists actually had a decent give and take. One point was questioning how Hagel with his personality will ever get along with the folk in the pentagon in a time of cuts and wars winding down. On the other hand, another pointed out that sometimes people surprise you. He gave the example of Les Aspin who most thought would be terrific in that job and turned out to be not so good at all. Then they contrasted that with Dick Cheney who many thought would be disastrous as Defense Sec. because he had never served –yet by most accounts he was considered a very good and respected Secretary of Defense even by people who later came to abhor his politics as VP.

    That’s why I’m being only partly sarcastic and facetious when I muse that if a good-liberal — a dyed-in-the-wool-liberal — politician embraces or hangs out with, say, a Klu Klux Klanner, a Neo-Nazi or the president of Iran, many like-minded folks on the left will sigh: “Oh, isn’t that adorable.”

    I won’t include anything about characters like Jeremiah Wright, since that goes without saying.

  11. What happened was not exactly a filibuster, just something to stop a rush vote. Maybe some new shoes will drop, maybe some Democrats will change their mind. I think one possible idea might to be request am informal secret ballot – just to show peoiple what other Senators really think.

  12. John Podhoretz says that at least two Republican Senators say they will let the nomination go through – provided no new shoes drop. He said it’s not such a good bet that nbew shoes won’t drop.

    He mentions the latest thing – a speech Chuck Hagel gave at Rutgers University in March 2007 where he said the State Department had become an adjunct to the Israeli Foreign Office.

    The State Department!

    This is not only tinged with anti-semitism, (with the idea of Jews pulling strings of unsuspecting Gentiles) he says, it’s ludicrous, bizarrem, and speculaturely stupid.

    Now the State Department is known for its historical Arabism.

    At that time Condoleeza Rice had moved over to the State Department and adopted some of her new institutions bias against Israel. What Hagel says is the opposite of the truth. [But that’s why he said it – SF]

    The kindest explanation of this bias, John Podhoretz indicates, is that the State Department deals with 22 Arab states and only one Israel.

    Because there is a certain tendency to go native, and the State Department is organized by geography, not the politics of a country, they wind up as an institutional with a bias in favor of the region’s supermajority. Well, really because they are lied to.

    I heard Schumer give a rather extraordinary speech. In Hebrew, he told the crowd, his name would be “shomer,” or “guardian.”

    A shomer, he noted, was a watchman guarding the gates of ancient Jerusalem and the Temple. And that was his mission: defending the Jewish people and Israel from those who’d attack it or wish it ill.

    Well, I have aSchumer anecdote, too. In 1989, when he was still a member of Congress and his district included all of Midwood in Brooklyn, Schumer addressed a big crowd at a forum at Joel Braverman High School at the corner of Avenue J and E. 16 Street.

    Charles Schumer told a story in which he was the only member of Congress who was pro-Israel about something or other.

    He also claimed to have predicted the Savings and Loan scandal.
