Geraldo to Run for New Jersey Senate Seat — But Which One???

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 1:51 am

The scuttlebutt is that he’s running for Lautenberg’s seat.

Could be.

Somehow I have this feeling that Sen. Menendez’s seat might be in jeopardy as well.

Always trust content from Patterico.

UPDATE: Daughters always know what to do when a sex scandal hits.

  1. What was that noise?!?!

Oh, that was just me, dropping another shoe on the floor.

It’s always startling when the other shoe drops…

  11. F#ck Ed Koch. He couldn’t run for governor because of his pathetic remarks about the rest of New York state outside of NYC. He was Doomberg without the shoe lifts.

  12. Salon had a pretty interesting story about the Menendez (and the doctor’s) mess yesterday. Of course the author had to get his digs into the Daily Caller, stuff like yeah they mentioned it way back last fall but considering the source why would anybody have paid any attention. The story also gets into how Gov. Chris Christie would be naming a temporary replacement should Menendez be forced to resign soon and some of the political considerations and gyrations about whether to have a stand alone special election as opposed to combining it with New Jersey’s next election for governor.

Realistically, Christie would prefer a stand-alone special election – to keep any Senate race away from the gubernatorial race, since he’s already well-positioned to win reelection. Why complicate it by tossing another high-profile contest – one Democrats would be far better positioned to win – onto the ballot on the same day? Democrats would probably prefer a stand-alone special too; why risk having Christie’s popularity – 74 percent in the latest Quinnipiac poll – rub off on the GOP’s Senate nominee?

The good news for Democrats is that their nominee would likely be Cory Booker, who would be a formidable statewide candidate. But Booker is starting to take some punches, there’s no guarantee his popularity will hold up, nor is it certain that he’d run – especially with Frank Lautenberg still very likely to retire in ’14. Plus, the Democratic nominee would be opposing a de facto incumbent – whoever Christie appoints to the seat, someone who could use that quasi-incumbency to build name recognition and popularity. And who would Christie turn to? The GOP bench is thin in New Jersey, but one fascinating name I heard tonight: Woody Johnson, the New York Jets owner, who was one of Mitt Romney’s top backers last year.

Of course there was the usual caveat of “oh this underage prostitute and trip thing may be nothing at all–more proof is needed”, yada yada, along with other obvious attempts to minimize the damage. (And Salon’s typical low info commenters were in serious Anthony Weiner scandal level denial and having none of it) But as I read that article in a lefty journal I thought, “Oh yeah, it’s a big deal scandal and high level Dems know it and are trying to prepare their voters through placements such as this.

  13. I am not so sure that Menendez is out. After all, Democrat voters don’t care about morality. A Republican would go down in flames for the same thing. For Democrats, screwing under age hookers is a feature, not a bug.

  15. Bar Sinister, it is sadly true that Menendez recently won re-election even though he was already under a cloud. I think the current assumption, though, is that neither Sen. Menendez or his previous supporters may have much of a say in whether or not he can continue as a U.S. Senator.

  17. Yeah, it’s not like the Senator drove his car into a bay, left his passenger to drown, then failed to report it to authorities until after lunch the next day.

If Menendez had done that, then his Senatorial career would be over !

  19. Sammy, are you saying that Menendez’ daughter’s breasts are, uh, under investigation ?
I imagine most of the guys in the FBI are lining up for that assignment !

  20. For many it’s hard enough to process the image of our parents having sex. Can’t imagine being an adult daughter trying to process the idea of old dad schtupping underage foreign hookers!

  28. To those who keep saying the Dems will never let the alleged underage girl situation kill his Senate position, you might consider that some (I can’t find it at this late hour) women’s groups have already started issuing “if it’s true…” notices. He may be doomed. No way progressives want to do battle with feminists and ‘women’s groups’ who put them into office with the War On Women farce.

So…Geraldo doesn’t personally like the Republicans, but there are millions of Republicans who wish that Geraldo would join them?

  30. How is Geraldo any worse than Franken?

  32. Were the alleged hookers underaged in the Dominican Republic?

A old-time politician once said that the only way he could be beaten is if he was caught in bed with a live boy or a dead girl. At least in Massachusetts, that turned out to not be true — viz. Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank and Garry Studds — and it might not be true in Jersey, either. I did hear a suggestion that Senator Memendez come out as homosexual, because there’s just no way a homosexual Hispanic Democrat could ever be kicked out in the Garden State.

Depends. If Governor Christie has the authority to appoint his replacement, Senator Menendez survives; if New Jersey state law requires a special election to fill the seat, he could be gone.
