Server Move

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 3:19 am

We’re moving to a new server this morning that should help with the performance issues the site has been having during the past week. The process has started, but it will be a while before everything is transferred to the new server. Comments will be disabled while the database is being transferred to the new server.

UPDATE: The database move is complete. If you’re seeing this message, you’re in the right place! If you run into any issues, please report them as comments on this post.

UPDATE BY PATTERICO: This post and the first update were actually written by the admin and not by me. Anyway, let me know how the new server works out.

  1. This comment is to make sure you can still leave a comment.

  2. This comment is an attempt to respond in a witty way to a placeholder post.

And thus raise my blog cred with the other commenters.

    consider yourselves amused.

  3. Thanks, for everything you do.

  4. Using Chrome, I’m not seeing an Amazon link, just 2 donate and 1 subscribe icons. I do see Amazon in IE.

  5. Using Chrome, I see everything on the right side: Amazon and the Donate buttons.

I’m also using Chrome and I can see the Amazon space on the right.

Check to see if you have adblock running. It should look like a Stop Sign near the URL bar. If you do, click the icon and set to not run on this domain (and the domains of other blogs you would like to support).

  7. Yes, that was it Dustin.

  8. We won! we won!! Ok. Wrong thread. Sorry.

  9. So far all right. The URLS have not changed, so all links should remain the same.

The recent comments file is still not showing up, but that’s probably because it’s been disabled.

  10. Savinmg of comments seems to be faster, but it wasn’t slow before on reasonably fast connections.

  11. Tell mMark to look at the feed page:

    https://patterico.com/feed/atom/

It may be more to his liking. (except it has no comments)

An alternate comments page that looks like that (so we could have a choice, and if it is a mistake there is no problem in going back) might be a good idea.)

  12. Loaded quickly, but without Recent Comments. Amazon et al are all in place.

  13. I’ll work on Recent Comments a little later this morning along with some changes to the comment display.

    Admin Guy (492627)

  14. RSS feed switched over OK.

    Karl_L (ff486c)

  15. All of the dead blogroll links are still there. Maybe just replace “favorite sites” with “favorite sites circa 2007” 🙂

  16. You know what would be nice, Admin Guy? To have each comment appear with either its IP address or, if that’s too much of an invasion of privacy, a proxy for that address, a unique identifier that represents it. That way we could all see when someone uses different names. What would be cool (but probably too much work) would be to be able to click on this IP address or proxy identifier and see all the unique names that have commented from it.

  17. “recent comments” still missing, using Google, if that’s relevant.

IGotBupkis, Legally Defined Cyberbully in All 57 States (8e2a3d)

  18. “Recent Comments” is back!

But now there are 15, not 10. The last two are ones I left on Open Thread – one of the open threads. (actually the second one – Open Thread number 20 – but there are still things I want to answer on the first.)

When I left them, the two at the bottom of the 15, “Recent Comments” was not yet back.

One important point: You can’t update the comments page by refreshing it. Or at least by hitting enter.

You have to post a comment, or switch threads and switch back. (or go to the main page and then back to the comments page.)

I think you could also do it with hitting one of the Recent Comments in the same thread you are in, but without “Recent Comments” of course that wasn’t possible.

  19. @19 Sammy Finkelman
Recent Comments is back! I couldn’t find a recent comments plugin that I liked, so I decided to build something that did what I wanted.

I was making a couple of adjustments when you noticed it and added some smarts to it. You will always see at least 10 recent comments. If the comments are coming fast and furious, you will see all comments that are less than five minutes old up to a maximum of 15 comments.

I also added shading to alternate comments so that you can more easily find your way around the wall of text.

Patterico is special, so his comments will get some special highlighting.

I’ll do some work on the comment refresh issues. The caching plugins (designed to reduce load on the server) can sometimes be a little too aggressive. That’s the next thing to fix and then I’ve got an idea up my sleeve that I may tinker with. Don’t hold your breath — it may never see the light of day — but it’s a cool idea if I can pull it off.

    @17 Milhouse
I’ll bounce your suggestion off Patterico. It’s his blog, after all. It would put a damper on sock puppet threads, though.

    Admin Guy (492627)

  20. A hash of the IP would be an amusing feature outside of the sockpuppet threads.

    SPQR (768505)

  21. You also get the comment age in the recent comment list. It’s a static value based on when the page was loaded.

No more tinkering tonight unless something is broken.

    Admin Guy (492627)

  22. It’s adding how long ago comments were made – but now the number of “Recent Comments” is down to 9.

There are advantages to one way, (higher number of comments) and there are advantages to the other way.

It’s not so good when all, or almost all, of the comments shown are from the same thread.

    Sammy Finkelman (69e89f)

  23. I like it best when the background is plain white.

    Sammy Finkelman (69e89f)

  24. Now when you send a comment and it posts, it will always appear like this:

    Sammy Finkelman on Server Move

    Zero seconds ago.

There is always only one unit of time: N number of seconds, minutes or hours.

    Sammy Finkelman (69e89f)

  25. This time it was (1 second ago)

    Also (1 minute ago)

    But (2 minutes ago)

The count is still at 9.

    Sammy Finkelman (69e89f)

  26. Now my last comment is at (13 seconds ago)

It seems like we’ve now got a performance test here, too!

    Sammy Finkelman (69e89f)

  27. @23 Sammy Finkelman

    Pesky ranging bugs. Bug smashed.

  28. Admin Guy,

You’ve done a wonderful job. Clean, organized, and user friendly. It couldn’t be better!
