Google’s “Star Trek” Theme
Go to Google today and click around. There’s a fun Star Trek theme:
Star Trek: The Original Series first aired 46 years ago Friday, and Google is marking the occasion with an elaborate, interactive doodle that includes a number of Trek tropes, including a doomed redshirt, a chief communications officer in soft-focus, a bulkhead full of tribbles, a generic rocky planet, and a whole lot of blinking and beeping and flashing lights.
The doodle is based on a first-season episode titled ‘The Arena,’ in which Captian Kirk is transported to a planet that looks suspiciously like the outskirts of Los Angeles, where he must face off against a reptilian humanoid.
It’s worth a few moments of your time.
That was fun. I’ve always liked the Tribbles episode best so that was my favorite part.

They were also used in Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock, when the characters were on the planet Vulcan. I figure whoever terraformed the M-class planets must have used a template for all of them.

Yeah, I know – there was a Gorn that worked for the Tholeans in the (relatively new) Enterprise alternate universe episode. That was awesome.

Rick Berman will forever hate me for criticizing the use of a solo drinking cup in the episode, “relics”. On a radio show I told Berman that the solo cup made a laser pip on Picard’s nose in the scene where he and Scotty are on the holodeck recreation of the original Enterprise’s bridge drinking. Berman screamed at me about his using an 1810 Cuervo bottle in that scene, too.
