  8. he was in an impossible situation really, cause of he didn’t want to hurt his dying wife’s feelings, it’s just he didn’t like her in that way anymore

    so he found some hoochie he *did* like in that way, and they made a baby!

    I don’t think he expected his wife to live as long as she did, and soon the whole situation became very awkward

    he needed monies for to conceal the Tawdry Circumstances, but he couldn’t use his own monies cause of his wife might would find out, and get her feelings hurt and be humilated and such and then his children would hate him

    so he just did what he had to do

    I’m not sure what he did was illegal though plus the whole sorry affair blew up in his face rather a lot spectacularly, and the degree to which he is held in contempt only strengthens in proportion to the length of time and the intimacy with which any given person had known him

    the wee little baby might still like him I guess

    babies are very undiscerning though

I can’t tell if the lack of front page coverage is because the press is covering for yet another Dem caught with his drawers down and keeping it out of sight, or if everyone across the board loathes him so much and front page placement is pointless when all the titillating details were made public long ago. I didn’t see it on the front page of the Wapo or the NYT, and the LAT has an In the News link to go to for info.

    Apparently there is a level of gutter-scum one can sink to and both the left and right recognize it.

  16. Dana, compare Weiner and Edwards. When the left despises one of their own, they will throw him to the wolves. Edwards isn’t socially toxic enough for them. And because if he beats this charge, he’ll be politcally viable again in another decade. So they don’t report on it so everyone forgets and moves on. Also why the word “democrat” or “democratic vice presidential nominee” rarely appears in the articles.

  20. I was surprised — but impressed — to read National Review’s online editorial arguing that the prosecution of John Edwards should not hinge on his campaign finance irregularities. I thought it was a principled stand for NR to take, and I love the way they perfectly described the utter despicableness of the former VP nominee. It’s a very interesting read.

  21. He didn’t use campaign funds. this was totally separate from his campaign fund.

    The argument for this being a federal crime, is that this was really give to him to help him run for president – therefore this was collecting unreported and illegally large campaign donations.

    I think there are a lot f problems with this idea. Suppose John Edwards had decided not to run for president? Would this then be illegal campaign contributions? What if he ran 5 or 8 years later? Would they be illegal campaign contributions? To what campaign? What if somebody sets up a legal defense fund? People often contribute to that because they want to help someone run for office. Yet a legal defense fund does not count against any campaign contribution limits.

    Of course the other way, what if somebody never sets up a campaign fund, or sets up a limited one, and there’s another fund to promote his reputation?

    Now the defense Edwards is using seems to be that this had nothing to do with his campaign but was done out of personal friendship. A big motive in such a case if this is not for the voters in the next election, is to hide it from his wife. So proof as to how much Elizabeth Edwards knew becomes evidence.

    It is just no good either way but maybe worse to consider this a campaign fund. That way, anybody who hid anything about himself, or promoted himself in any way, could be blackmailed into not running, because if he ran, then all the money given for this becomes retrospectively, campaign contributions and campaign spending..
