Oh yeah… Washington has a caucus tonight (Update: Romney wins)

It seems like people care about this even less than Michigan and Arizona, although it’s the last stop before Super Tuesday.  RCP’s Scott Conroy notes the result is anyone’s guess.  The state’s GOP chairman predicts a win for either Mitt Romney or Ron Paul.  In a primary campaign marked by low turnout, there are reports of standing-room-only crowds at many locations.  In fact, about 1,500 people were turned away from pooled Benton County caucuses in Kennewick by event organizers after rooms at the Three Rivers Convention Center reached capacity this morning.  The rules are not unlike those for Iowa, with a straw poll followed by votes that actually select the delegates.  Inasmuch as people need not stick around past the straw poll, Ron Paul could make trouble for Mitt Romney on the actual delegate selection.

Here’s your map.

Update: Romney wins.  Paul and Santorum very close to each other for second.

  4. congratulations Mr. Governor Romney on a hard-fought victory which Rick Santorum failed to achieve. I guess you could say you’re a winner and he’s a big fat loser, depending on how you wanted to analyze the results.

  7. That’s five in a row: Maine, Michigan, Arizona, Wyoming and now Washington. On to Super Tuesday!

  8. Although this has been a painful experience for Republicans and conservatives we must always look at it as a family fight and nothing more. The more Romney has been back up against the wall the stronger he has come out fighting and voters are taking notice that he performs well under pressure. We’ve made him earn everything he’s gotten which has made him a stronger candidate, not a weaker one. Even for Mitt’s strongest detractors it’s hard to ignore five primaries in a row.

False. Romney will back into the nomination due to a lack of real competition. He hasn’t earned a damn thing and will be thoroughly trounced in the general election. Given the issues of the day, the GOP could not have selected a more pathetic candidate if they convened to accomplish just that.

  11. WooHoo! My favorite cat, Mittens, won WA State! I was kenneled in WA for 8 years. I have great memories of tall trees good for scratching on. And, as you well know, my human Mitt is a tree aficionado.

  13. The enthusiasm is over-whelming. I guess having Obama serve another disastrous 4 years or having a Republican in the White House is six a one, half a dozen of the other for some folks.

  14. “I know sometimes I can get wound up,” Santorum told a group of supporters at the Chillicothe High School gymnasium. But, he said, “the words out of my mouth are my own. They’re not written by some poll-tested speechwriter.”

that’s about as presidential as farting in an elevator

  15. I’m not sure I even understand some of the comments so I’ll ask if they want Romney to quit the race and go home? It seems that conservatives that don’t support Romney have a hard time understanding that other conservatives actually do. Tea Party members and candidates support him yet there are some that don’t. Should we concentrate on everybody that doesn’t support him and dismiss conservatives that do? It’s become patently obvious that the “establishment” theory is becoming increasingly tedious and old when one looks at the polls and support he’s gotten. If you’re a Santorum or Gingrich supporter I get it. You’re pissed off that your candidate isn’t leading and Romney is actually connecting to people that you thought he would never connect to. Is it so inconceivable that conservatives would look to someone outside of Washington with business experience in these times? Do you think Romney supporters haven’t realized that he has put an organization in place to defeat Obama while the more “conservative” candidates have not? Are we to dismiss that the guy is “gamer” and has risen to the challenge every time while the more “conservative” candidates have faultered? This is the REPUBLICAN primary. People that vote in it actually can think for themselves. Calling someone a “conservative candidate” doesn’t make them that and calling someone a “moderate” doesn’t automatically sway voters in the other direction. We actually have brains and use them.
