Iran Helping Al Qaeda Plan Spectacular Attack on Europe?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:49 pm

More clearing the decks from the last few days:

Iran and al Qaeda’s core leadership under Ayman al Zawahiri have established an “operational relationship” amid fears the terror group is planning a spectacular attack against the West.

There are concerns such an attack, possibly targeting Europe, would be in revenge for the killing of Osama bin Laden by the US last year.

Sky News’ intelligence sources have said Iran has been supplying al Qaeda with training in the use of advanced explosives, “some funding and a safe haven” as part of a deal first worked out in 2009 which has now led to “operational capacity”.

Retaliating against Europe?

My tipster asks: “Is targeting Europe instead of the US a sign they can’t reliably hit us, or a sign they’ve decided having a Democrat in the White House is better than a Republican?”

Good question. Could be disinformation, too, I suppose. But my tipster’s conjecture is a real possibility.

In a post below, Karl asks about issues that might affect the election. A giant terrorist attack could certainly do that. Perhaps the terrorists realize that such an attack would be more likely to result in a Republican president.

If this theory is right, awful Democratic candidate = safety from terror!

And you thought there was nothing good about having Obama in office!

P.S. Luckily, if it turns out Iran is giving safe haven to terrorists, you can bet your bottom dollar that Obama will go take care of business.

And then you can lose your bottom dollar.

  2. We’ve known this, since the 2003 attacks in Saudi Arabia, when Seyf al Aden, was in contact with the
    network, from Iran

  3. I wish I could find it, but somewhere on the innertubes, just before the 2008 election or immediately after it, I said something to the effect of the terrorists would not need to attack the US with Obama as President – they’d get just about everything they’d want without the fuss.

  4. If they wanted to keep a Democrat in the White House, they’d attack the US in June. The country naturally rallies around an incumbent President in an external crisis.

My money is on Iran trying to spook Europe away from the US.

  5. not to worry: the SCOAMF will apologize if they attack Europe, and speed up the withdrawal of US forces, so he can bring them home and disband the units.

LOL, i hope they do, actually.

It might wake up some stupid Euros to the threat, and it’s still going to make people HERE nervous and aware that they need a GOP president and not some feckless jackass like the Great Big 0.

  11. I think, more than anything, that this shows the ephemeral nature of enmities and alliances in that part of the world. When we went into Afghanistan, Iran was funding and supporting Shiite terrorists against the Wahabi Taliban and Al Qaeda, actually creating an additional front on the Iranian border alongside the Northern Alliance Opium Smugglers. Now Iran and Al Qaeda had an ecumenical and agreed on which brand of lubricant which facilitates sex is halal.

  12. Why Europe? Because the mostly spineless European leaders will not respond forcefully, but instead make concessions. The train bombing in Spain in 2004 resulted in the turnover of Government and the withdrawal of Spanish forces from Iraq.

  13. Let us not forget who has the best record against terrorism and terrorists, due to a more enlightened foreign policy than we had during Cheney/Bush. The results re our security have been obvious, though no credit whatsoever from the Right.

  15. I hope they learned something when they attacked us in 2001. They thought we would roll over like Europeans, and after the Clinton admin, that wasn’t an unfair thought. But instead we really did f them up quite badly. At significant cost to us, but that’s America.

Of course, these people are using terrorism because they are incapable of more, so that speaks against their ability to grow a brain and not attack us again.

I hope they don’t attack Europe either, but I think the “terrorize them into doing what we want” concept makes more sense there.

  19. It’s partially a sign they can’t hit us (or not as easily, as quickly, and as numerously) as Europe, and also a sign that there are people in
high positions in Iran, but not high enough positions in Iran, who are trying to avoid the abyss. Whether they can succeed or not, I don’t know.

So far they managed to limit attacks to people connected with the government of Israel (as opposed to pure civilians) and managed to make the attacks pretty incompetent. This is good, and things could be worse later.

  21. Yesterday I heard Glen Greenwald, himself, on the radio. He was talking on the local LA socialist radio program about how this story is just a little too coincidental. After all, didn’t the Bush administration tie terrorists to Iraq in 2002?

  23. There’s nothing to praise about the conduct of the Iraq War. It was a cluster****. We used an ax to swat a fly. Saddam Hussein and the key Bathists could have been taken out surgically the way the Israelis are now taking out Iranian nuclear scientists and we are taking out terrorist leaders like Awlaki in asylum countries like Yemen.
