Happy New Year — Cars Catching Fire Edition

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:31 pm

Cars are catching fire in Los Angeles in what some people apparently consider their celebration of the New Year.

Reminiscent of France.

Is that really who we want to be imitating?

  6. You expected what from Kaliforonia? This is what liberal socialist policies gets you. A bunch of people who have no respect for the property of others and a healthy mentality of entitlement. You reap what you sow. Do something about it or get out while you can.

From a purely symbolic standpoint — all politics aside — I find it interesting that both Los Angeles and California are seeing rates of population growth that are lower today than at any time since the late 1800s. So if the “Golden State” has for decades represented the “promised land” within the “promised land” of America in general — at least when it came to patterns of migration and immigration — then at least one aspect of those lands has returned to the era of the horse and buggy.

  14. This is the first census in the history of the State of California where the state did not increase its representation in Congress.
Also, in both L.A. and the Bay Area, major incumbent Dems are looking at having to run against each other in newly drawn districts as the population has shifted from those areas to the Central Valley and Inland Empire somewhat…
(Example: Henry Waxman will have to run against Brad Sherman to see which one will continue to represent the West-Side of L.A. –
and because of our new primary rules where the two top vote getters, regardless of party affiliation, have to face each other in the Fall,
it could play out that both will have to run TWO very expensive and bruising campaigns against the other – the poor dears).

  15. 5 of those fires were within 3 blocks of my house. There is no larger point to draw from this other than there are sick people in this world. A couple of weeks ago a guy did a Suicide by Cop by walking into traffic on Vine and shooting at cars until the PD shot him. Hollywood is a place that’s both strange and wonderful, some days more of one than the other.

  16. Please, let it not be a tea party type.

I personally think it’s Occupy remnants going into Phase II. In NYC 800 of them stormed Zucotti Park last night, so the hard core are definitely still in it.

People demanding lower taxes and/or wearing Tricorner Hats are a pretty rare sight in West Hollywood.

  19. I thought the fires were in NORTH Hollywood?
You do know the difference, don’t you.
There is a little physical impediment called the Cahuenga Pass/Hollywood Hills between them.
