Romney Skipping the Donald Trump Debate

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:13 pm

I’m not a fan of Mitt Romney. I have no confidence that he ever makes any decision for the right reason.

However, this is clearly the right decision:

Donald Trump may have mastered the art of the real estate deal, but when it comes to debates, he’s still an apprentice.

The celebrity businessman is having difficulty securing commitments from Republican presidential candidates for a Dec. 27 debate that he’s planning to moderate in Des Moines.

Mitt Romney on Tuesday became the latest big-name candidate to decline the event, telling Fox News’ Neil Cavuto that he informed Trump earlier today he would be too busy to appear. Romney noted that he already is planning to participate in two previously scheduled debates in Iowa this month. “I understand why Gov. Romney decided not to do it,” Trump told ABC News. He declined to elaborate further.

Appearing in a Trump debate makes a candidate a stage piece for the glorification of Donald Trump’s ego. Anyone who agrees to participate shows they are willing to become a prop for a superficial blowhard.

Absolutely the right decision.

  1. I agree. Good for Mr. Mitt.

Mr. Newt has difficulty in discerning those things most of us easily recognize as being tacky.

    Hence Callista.

  2. Good choice, Romney, and at a time when he needs the exposure.

I’ll give the RINO credit for this one.

  3. True, OTOH, Bloomberg, MSNBC, CNN, were considered exceptable

  4. And a not inconsiderable bonus–he’s ducking the salamander.

Maybe Christie will stand in for him, sup-hose and all.

  5. Then again Ron Paul and Huntsman won’t be there either, so those’re pluses for the Donald.

  6. I’m with dimitri on this one.

What, exactly makes Anderson Cooper, et al, so wonderfully qualified to conduct debates.

Despite what the networks would have you believe, the faces on TV probably are about as smart as your average cable installer, and that’s insulting to cable installers because they know how to do a job.

The average talking head on TV has writers and producers to script the questions and coach them on responses for the maximum benefit of an already decided-upon narrative.

They are on TV because they look good and know how to look serious on TV. I have never seen nor heard any indication they can put 2+2 together without the assistance of the production staff.

Donald Trump is pretty much the same. He learned how to manipulate the media to assume he knows what he’s doing and has managed to make everyone else think he knows how to make money, despite the evidence otherwise.

So, what’s the difference? If Donald wants to host one of an unnecessary number of debates, more power to him.

However, they all are smarter than me. They are rich and I am not. They do know how to be immensely successful in the sense of rolling in the dough. That is something to keep in mind.

  7. Sorry I got that sock from Battlefield 3, and I’ve forgotten to switch back. I really don’t Trump, his embrace of national health care, anti Iraq skepticism, birtherism, et al.

  8. How can you tout your “family values” vote one year and completely abandon them the next ?

It’s easy. Newt has confessed (Bill Clinton only did when a federal judge made him).
    Forgiveness … it’s a difficult concept … for some.

    Michael Moore (d1c681)

  9. I dont know we had angry spitting moderators like Charlie Rose giving nutcase racist looney tunes like Cain and Paul a pass – making this the “Snookie” primary – having the Donald host a debate is almost a step up

    almost….

BTW Romney just announced he changed his mind and will attend the debate but may not answer questions

  16. I would have no problem, at all, with Trump moderating the debate if he:

    1. Committed not to run for President in 2012

    2. Committed not to endorse anyone other than the Republican nominee for President, if anyone

But of course, he did none of these things. I say skip the debate unless your name is Rick Perry, where it probably can’t hurt anything.

I like Newt. I wish he had declined this invitation.

    Amen.

And ignore Haiku’s crying. He’s known to dish it out and not take it. His rhetoric has been perverted and gross at times, and certainly vulgar, so his crying about yours is very amusing to see.

Let’s take a look at what we’ve done in Texas. Perry’s argument is valid. Let’s not use these technocrats to do everything. Make government less expensive, and make it do less, and let’s look at how that worked in Texas.

See? People prosper on their own, without Romneycare or MA’s enormous government.

Haiku doesn’t get it, but then, Haiku is in California, the one state that makes MA’s government look good.

  35. Dustin… you continue to amuse me with your lashing out. Get a grip on reality, gimp, and try to walk back your claim of being the arbiter of who is – and isn’t – a true conservative.

You only look sillier, as each day goes by, and seem hell bent on alienating anyone who doesn’t see things your way.

    Colonel Haiku (b19539)

  36. Appearing in a Trump debate makes a candidate a stage piece for the glorification of Donald Trump’s ego.

The same thing could be said for NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News etc, or the Presidential Debate commission, or the people running the League of Women Voters for that matter (they lost control of the general election Presidential debates after the 1984 election but still sponser more local debates)

Not to mention whoever staged the State Attorney Generals debate.

The question should be what kind of a debate would Donald Trump conduct. How’s that going to work. He offers free airtime – why shouldn’t the candidates take it? It’s more of an audeince tahn any possible personal appearance.

Is there a reason anyone should boycott Donald Trump?

Maybe there is, I don’t know.

  43. I have yet to see one person explain why The Donald is any worse than any of the MFM twatwaffles that have moderated debates up to this point. republicans are racist. Discuss. You hate the elderly, and want to murder puppies and eat babies. Explain.

  44. I think it kind of represents a gratuitous hobnobbing with the one-percenters… which is why I think Wall Street Romney would have found the whole affair to be impossibly awkward

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  45. Anyone who agrees to participate shows they are willing to become a prop for a superficial blowhard.

Anyone who agrees to it is taking advantage of yet another opportunity to present their arguments of persuasion to the American people. It should be taken advantage of when possible. The MSM & the left may find it a joke and relentlessly mock Trump and the participating candidates, but so what, they do that anyway.

And as Trump fascinates the public so much, he may draw in more of an audience than a stuffed shirt like Brian Williams or Tom Brokaw would. Why not take advantage of that exposure?

  46. couldn’t the same criticism of trump’s ego be made of all of the (left-leaning except for huckabee) moderators of the debates so far? i’ll grant that there is a certain entertainment value that trump brings to the event, but if that means more eyes and ears for the republican message then it’s all to the good.
