Barney Frank Retires
[Posted by Karl]
Why? Jim Geraghty (and Jazz Shaw) note:
Following the 2010 census, Massachusetts is in line to lose one congressional seat, taking them from 10 to 9. Frank is more than seventy years old and could very likely have been looking at retirement in the not too distant future anyway, and this gives the state party an easy out in terms of carving up their redistricting map without the need for a nasty, internecine food fight.
Close, but probably not quite right, as WPRI’s Ted Nesi reports:
Part of Frank’s calculus may be the new boundaries of his 4th Congressional District drawn by Massachusetts’ redistricting panel.
The biggest change for Frank’s 4th District is the loss of New Bedford, a key Democratic stronghold, and the addition of a bunch of conservative-leaning communities in my old stomping grounds along the Rhode Island border, including Attleboro, North Attleboro, Plainville, and U.S. Sen. Scott Brown’s hometown of Wrentham. That was going to be tough territory for Frank.
Indeed, Brown won Frank’s district before the lines were redrawn. Frank won in 2010 with 55% of the vote — but that was his worst showing since 1980, when he was first elected. Of the many bad things I could say about Frank, he’s not dumb when it comes to politics, which is why he now shuffles off to some quasi-private sector gig, likely a lucrative one.
Update: Frank basically confirms the theory presented here.

It doesn’t help that all three are Black, but it seems that the violation is in diminishing the chances of Hispanics, who are a larger portion of the CA electorate than are Blacks.

White said her financial problem means little. “It makes me out to be one of the millions of people right now that are trying to keep a roof over their head,” she said.
The station also cited a lawsuit by a former business partner of White’s who accused White of stalking her with repeated e-mails and texts in a case that was ultimately dismissed.
That was followed by a libel suit lost by White because she failed to respond to it, WAGA said.”

Yea, what the hell was that all about? From that moment on, one has to assume any supporter of hers will always favor the squishiest, gooiest of Republican candidates. So arguing in favor of a Rick Perry instead of a, say, Jon Huntsman?
Beyond that, I believe the super squish woman from New York was endorsed by Newt Gingrich. Or one more reason I can’t figure out why any person is such a purist in favor of or against the various Republicans. That’s because they’ve all got feet of clay, and I have a sense virtually all of them harbor liberal streaks in their corner of their minds.
But when President “Goddamn America” is occupying the Oval Office, these are desperate times. And I can’t be into the art of perfection during desperate times. Getting rid of “Goddamn America” comes first and foremost. Everything else, as far as I’m concerned, is secondary.

EPWJ – Still have not seen that confirmation FROM CAIN, sorry.
Have not seen Cain call the GOP racist either, sorry.
daleyrocks (bf33e9) — 11/29/2011 @ 8:38 amAs a personal aside, I know Dale Russell the reporter who broke the story. We don’t always see eye to eye or agree, but he is a sharp reporter who wouldn’t do a story like this if he did not believe Ms. White
-Erick Erickson Red State – Cain supporter
What I want to know is who’s been spying on or investigating Herman Cain?
This woman did not come forward on her own. She came forward because she kept on getting telephone
calls from reporters and possibly others, possibly with at least one call that advised her to come forward on her own so that others wouldn’t write uncomplimentary and somewhat inaccurate stories.
But who tipped off who in the first place?

We received a phone tip from someone who knew Ginger White. That person claimed Ms. White was having an affair with Herman Cain. The tipster also called a number of other national media outlets who reached out to her. White told FOX 5, she felt trapped.
someone who knew Ginger White. How long he knew her, it doesn’t say. If Ginger White confirmed she knew him or her and explained how that person knew about it, it doesn’t say. Maybe it was someone named Jennifer George.
It is interesting – 13 years = 1998. This also goes back to his time at the National Restaurant Association.
I would interpret the lawyer’s statement as possibly meaning he is not sure what is true.
Herman Cain is being a bit vague and did not deny this like he did with Sharon Bialek. He hasn’t been clear.
He has not so far even admitted kissing her, but you get the feeling that at least he or she wanted something to happen. According to her, nothing at all happened the first night in Herman Cain’s hotel room, except he invited her to meet him in Palm Springs and later on he would fly her to other places he was. She doesn’t say when it ended.
Staying in contact with her doesn’t mean anything is or was still ongoing. She seems to be saying she got back in contact with him 2 1/2 years ago because she needed money.

Sammy – Check the CNN interview. He did deny the affair.

Cain Reassessing Candidacy as New Allegations Emerge by Jeff Zeleny, November 29, 2011, 11:53 am New York Times
Herman Cain told members of his campaign staff on Tuesday that he was reassessing whether to proceed with his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, an aide confirmed, a day after an Atlanta woman disclosed details of what she said was a 13-year affair with him.
In a morning conference call with his advisers, Mr. Cain said that he would make a decision in the coming days about whether to stay in the presidential race after his campaign was rocked by another round of allegations about his sexual conduct.
The call, which was first reported by National Review, came as Mr. Cain was heading to Michigan for a campaign stop on Tuesday evening. He said that he was discussing the future of his campaign with his family and was considering options for his next move.
I guess this one’s accurate. But — his wife already knows!!
Quitting now would imply there’s a lot more and that all allegations made against him, now or in the future, are true. His personal reputation would be in more tatters. Nobody will listen very long to any explanations if he drops out.
So better to quit after Iowa or New Hampshire when he gets few votes.
He may need to slow down spending, but he can probably end this without debt. Herman Cain has always been good at watching money – maybe too good. It’s been said the quality of Godfather’s Pizza was low.
Sometimes candidates may quit and not legally quit so they can continue raising money.

narciso – Sacred honor compelled him to come forward with phone records and a dubious story about his sexual relationship with Nikki Haley. EPWJ probably gloated over that one as well.

Cain Reassessing Candidacy as New Allegations Emerge
Cain is a guy, and most guys, on too many occasions, have brains where their genitals are, and visa versa. An awareness of that aspect of human nature — particularly of male nature (which is polymorphous and non-monogamous) — is a big reason the idea of self-control and personal responsibility (or social conservatism) can’t be taken lightly. But now after decades of everyone becoming desensitized, harder to shock, and being constantly bombarded by “do your own thang” and “if it feels good, do it!,” it would be a miracle if most people in general aren’t influenced by that.
Beyond that, it is interesting that the woman paraded before the media by Gloria Allred a few weeks ago and the current woman claiming to be Cain’s honeypot both have really flaky, lawsuit-plagued backgrounds.
Mark (411533) — 11/29/2011 @ 10:07 amRepublican supermajority in the house
Cain’s problems are many, fraudulent running of a campaign, assault, he should be shunned and forever striken from people’s memories – this is beyound absurd and the fact that people are still defending him goes to the shallowness of people’s values and morals

What frackin super majority have the republicans ever had in modern times you unbelievably stupid ass?
Most people here wish that Pat would shun you, ban you for always lying, so we can strike you from our memories.
