Dow Loses 634 Points

Filed under: Obama — Patterico @ 7:16 pm

But at least Obama gave an impressive statement about the downgrade.

No eye roll necessary.

  1. Like Instapundit suggested, it could have been 734 points.

    100 points saved or created.

  2. You have to wonder if he realized upfront that this presidency thing would require leadership skills.

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  3. Nope. He has always been told he was a Great Leader…without being a great leader. Some people rise to greatness. Others do not rise to the challenge, but whine.

I keep thinking how everyone said how stupid GWB was. And Ronald Reagan. Then I look at this.

  4. The market dropped over 200 points while he was on tv being all douchey.

    JD (318f81)

  5. If played properly by a canny GOP candidate (big if!), the simple fact of the downgrade ought to be a nuclear-powered trump card in the upcoming campaign debates: effectively, a one-stop-shopping debate ender.

OBAMA: (endless gasbag chatter and pig-ignorant platitudes)

GOP CANDIDATE: In 2007, US credit was triple-A. And now it isn’t. Hey, remember back when there were bucks? Remember where they used to stop?

If we could factor out the MFM (though of courswe we can’t) it’d be the shortest debate in prexy history.

    /Obama basically said that.

They were guilty of being less than perfect while Republican. We could do a lot worse than GWB. Even today he is not out there saying a word. If I were him, damn that would not be the case.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  7. Dustin, there were lots of things about GWB I had trouble with. But he is sure a heck of a lot better than this guy. And he has not been a jerk after leaving office. Despite the fact that this administration continues to use him for their frequent Five Minute Hates.

  8. You can, and I have, argued about where their heads were at times, but you have to hand it to the Bush’s, they do have class, as they both endured the slings and arrows of succeeding Presidents without lashing out.

    AD-RtR/OS! (b759aa)

  9. Yeah, Bush has proven himself to be a classy patriot. I want to criticize that he left us with a looming financial disaster, but I know he did try to reform entitlements and was fried for it.

  10. I watched the slaughter today using my Scottrade account following just a sample of 20 stocks. What a bloodbath! But I could not help myself when I saw DRYS drop to $2.28, so I bought 1879 (just enough to wet my beak) shares. I cheered when it rose to $2.31 just a moment afterwards. It closed at $2.21. Sigh! Let’s see what happens tomorrow. Prolly should have sold when it went back to $2.28. I know it is not a lot of money, but it is still money. Fortunately, all my other money is in cash.

  11. Why is oil so cheap now? Is that a sign that the economy is cooling?

It’s good news, but it’s the opposite of what I’d expect.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  12. Yes, the world economy cools, the demand for oil goes down due to less comsumtion of goods that need to be shipped world-wide. That’s why I purchased DRYS – cheaper fuel=lower costs. A player like DRYS will benefit long-term from cheaper oil options. Or so my pea-brain understands.

    felipe (2ec14c)

  13. Yes, all the commodities are down, which is a sign of a slowing world-wide economy.
The only thing moving up seems to be the precious metal index.
    Good news?
If the prospect of the dreaded “double dip” is anything to look forward to.
The ‘bamster is going to have a tough campaign if unemployment stays where it is, or even gets worse. If the bottom drops out of the Global Economy (which could happen with the problems in EU, plus the inflation in China that the central bank there is attempting to counter), we could see an increase in the reported numbers, but I don’t see how the facts-on-the-ground can get any worse.

    AD-RtR/OS! (b759aa)

  14. Usually I try to come up with some flip one-liner about Obama, but I just can’t think of any right now. Humor just seems beside the point, gallows humor even.

I’m concerned that our country may be in trouble–real, serious, existential trouble–and by November 2012 it may already be too late to reverse the damage done. I just don’t know what’s going to happen, and I’m worried about what kind of country my kids are going to grow up in.

    Major Kong (f4574f)

  15. I just can’t shake how horrible and useless and pathetic the one’s speech was today. It started late and who the heck wrote it, anyhow? Clinton or Reagan or Chris Christie or Marco Rubio would have stood up there without notes or a prompter, would have sincerely eulogized the dead heroes and then would have said a few words from the heart to reassure America about the economy and the downgrade. This is the week Barry’s poll approval numbers become irreversible, I think. Pretty much everybody knows and accepts what we’re dealing with now, whether they can bring themselves to publicly admit it or not.

    elissa (13e9ed)

  16. If the prospect of the dreaded “double dip” is anything to look forward to.

You’re right. Pretty stupid comment on my part, really. Cheaper gas at the pump will be nice, but ultimately, if it means people looking for work still can’t find any…

I’m with Major Kong. I don’t really know what to expect over the next couple of years. I worry that Obama will grow desperate and gamble heavily in ways that don’t work.

What if you applied to clean up the mess, promised you could do it really well with specific results, and then when I hired you, you just whined about the problem while making it about ten times worse than it was before you got there?

Bush lost much of his power to control the deficit in 2006, and any honest observer realizes that. That’s the point the democrats had the power to extort anything they wanted in exchange for not defunding Iraq. That’s also the point the economy went to hell, and the deficit exploded.

The next point the economy took a real hit was the 2008 implosion, which Bush did in fact try to avert specifically, more prescient than your vaunted Krugman. The next point the economy really took a hit was when job growth went away the day Obamacare passed.

But Bush’s class is not being discussed ideologically here. He’s not bashing Obama at all, despite being bashed relentlessly.

And then there’s the alternative– the view from Mister Magoo:

“The fundamentals of our economy are strong.”
—Sen. John McCain, Republican Presidential Candidate, Sept. 25, 2008

‘On a day when unemployment was 6.1 percent and the Dow at 10,918, [today, unemployment is 9.1% and the Dow closing about the same, at 10,809.85] John McCain said, “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.” With America facing a credit crash, McCain’s words sounded tinny…’ – Source, Karl Rove/Newsweek
    http://2010.newsweek.com/top-10/most-memorable-quotes/mccain-the-fundamentals-of-our-economy-are-strong.html

Of course, Mr. Ospocka could have gone with a more calculated comment. Something familiar and weighty, like, “Fascinating.”

BTW, Patterico, ‘With 634, you get eyeroll.’ Ugh.

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  26. Heh. Frankly, I think you score a point on this one. Mccain did not convey the full problem we face. He still doesn’t. He acts like balancing the budget is a silly concept.

We should have offered America a better alternative to Obama.

  52. Obama is not ruining our economy because of his “inexperience”. Do you all really think that smart, ethical folks who really love America & who happened to work for a naive, fumbling President would allow him to screw up the way he has? No. Obama is the figurehead of a dark cabal. That cabal is deliberately working to destroy our economy and then dismantle our system of government as we know it.

To keep repeating how inept & inexperienced Obama is, is so … 2008. What’s the first rule of warfare? Know thine enemy!

Rush did an excellent piece earlier today, and asked “Does anybody now doubt that this was on purpose?”
    http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_080811/content/01125106.guest.html
Rush also points out how Christina Romer, former head of the Council of Economic Advisors, went on lunatic Maher’s comedy show to say “(we’re) pretty darn f**ked”. Who does that! Who are these people?

A former colleague of Karl Rove, Pete Wehner, says this: “Standard & Poor’s downgrade of America’s credit rating is a crushing political blow to President Obama. It reinforces, perhaps like nothing else has, the impression Obama is overseeing, and in some respects engineering, the decline of the American republic.

Wehner is hardly a wild-eyed Tea Party “terrorist”. I think this is a definite change in the tides – what so many of us know in our bones, and the few who speak it out loud, like Rush & Beck, now is going to be stated by “mainstream” conservatives soon.

The oh-I’m-afraid-of-being-called-a-racist cowardice needs to stop – now – and the gloves need to come off. It is NOT too soon to start attacking Obama – and no more of silly Cantor’s saying how much he likes Obama. He needs to be portrayed as the enemy of liberty that he is.

Oh, how I wish Congressman Allen West were running for President! He’d mop the floor with that ignorant usurper.

    Miranda (4104db)

  53. ______________________________________________

Everyone has to always remember that Obama sat in a church for almost 20 years listening to “goddamn America!” rhetoric from Jeremiah Wright. Obama not only wasn’t turned off by such sentiment, he in fact chose Wright to be his close adviser—until controversy forced Obama’s hand. (For comparison, very liberal Oprah Winfrey reportedly was so uncomfortable with the attitude on display in that Chicago-based church, she apparently stopped going there).

I’ve always thought that Jeremiah Wright spoke volumes what is now in the White House, that “goddamn America!” really was a window into Obama’s mind.

I therefore don’t think it’s off-the-wall or too flippant to theorize this nation’s current president truly has a weird, twisted contempt for the United States. That may explain why he casually and happily — and excessively and inappropriately — runs off to the golf course on a regular basis. I won’t say anything about the psychology behind his bowing like a servant in front of foreign dignitaries.

Jeremiah Wright said America’s chickens were coming home to roost, and, to give him credit, he hit that one on the bulls-eye when so many geniuses in this country went to the voting booth on November 4, 2008.

Obama was first supposed to speak at 11 am … then his appearance was delayed til 1 pm … not unusual – then 1 pm changed to 1:30 … still no ‘bama …. changed to 1:45 … and still no ‘bama .. finally he walks in at 1:52 …. bizarre. The market was down close to 400 pts already …. right after he spoke it sunk 200 more points ….

What kind of message did that send? It WAS a message, and it was deliberate. These people know what they are doing. NOTHING they do is casual or left to chance. Heck, O can hardly speak w/o TOTUS.

Occam’s Razor … what’s the simplest explanation for all of Obama’s “mistakes” … that they’re really not mistakes. Nobody is that dumb. We have much greater economic instability thanks to O’s actions.

And the stupid GOP keeps screaming “We need leadership” “Obama needs to lead” .. be careful what you wish for. Hitler was a great leader – so was Mao – so was Stalin. What we need is a leader who adheres to the Judeo-Christian values that, yes, made our country like no other (despite its flaws).

  58. You have to wonder if he realized upfront that this presidency thing would require leadership skills.

I don’t think he realized up front that he had more than a snowball’s chance of winning, and having to deal with “this presidency thing”. I think he was unprepared for the avalanche of support that turned him into a real contender, and when he found himself with the presidency he had no idea what to do with it. When Pinky and the Brain somehow managed to actually take over the world they threw it back and went back to their cage to plot the next night’s scheme to take it over again. Unfortunately you can’t do that in real life.

JFK was another person who had no idea what he wanted to do once he achieved his goal of becoming president. And he had less excuse than Obama, because he knew from the beginning that he stood a decent chance of winning. He should have had a vision for what he would do if he ever got there.

He was the Evil Genius, so he couldn’t simultaneously be stupid (though somehow GWB managed that trick). And what are the odds that whomever the GOP puts up in 2012 will also be stupid? Well, Palin, Bachmann, and Cain are already stupid, and if someone else gets the nomination then they will surely be stupid too. You’d think these people would have heard of the Little Boy Who Cried Wolf.

Last refuge of all partisan Hax is calling someone racist.

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  87. It sure cuts down on having to think about policy and consequences.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  88. “Being of mixed race you could just as easily call him the ‘Great White Dope’”

Well, you could, except he’s not really white.

Now, if you were talking about a typical Dem-fascist like Mickey Moore, who is calling for the arrest of people deemed to be a threat to Dem political control (the boys at S & P), a time-honored Dem-fascist tactic (see two Red Scares, executive order 9066, etc.) then you could call him the Great White Lefty Fascist Fatass Maggot…with perfect justice. That old boy is pasty.

Of course, it doesn’t quite have the ring of Great Black Dope, but at least it’s accurate.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  89. I’m certain he is gripping his tall mocha latte with extra sprinkle most forcefully down at Starbucks. Fight the Power, troll-boi!

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  90. Respectfully, I never said he was in Japan now

His waking hours are very strange if he’s in Japan. As are the topics he wants to speak about and the familiarity of his words.

Simon, what do you think of the rules listed below the comment box?

    Dustin (b7410e)

  91. Dustin, I have never understood trolls.

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  92. “Racism”

If all black folks were as big as dirtbags as the Great Black Dope, then the racists would be right about blacks being inferior.

However, there are awesome black folks like Allen West, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams and my all time hero…Willie Mays, all of whom are infinitely superior to any white lefty that was ever spawned (or hatched, or however lefttards reproduce).

So, it looks like all you Jim Crow/New Black Panther Party, racist Dems have it all wrong, and racism is a crock.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  93. Racist dave:

If all black folks were as big as dirtbags as the Great Black Dope, then the racists would be right about blacks being inferior.

However, there are awesome black folks

What does a persons skin color have to do with anything?

    Spartacvs (2d9449)

  94. Dustin, I have never understood trolls.

    Comment by Simon Jester —

Me neither. I guess it’s a very complicated ritual, spending hours/days/weeks just to laugh that you wasted the time of people who pause for a moment to puzzle over the troll?

This blog could use progressive POVs. I think the problem there is that it’s very difficult and frustrating to take Obama’s side on current events, and most progressives don’t feel much need to do so. So that only leaves the dumbest true believers, whose real debate is to try to ruin discussions they don’t like.

Anyway, I see Stashiu beat me to my point in another thread.

I’m starting to lose my amusement at your avoidance sparty. Tick tock.

  96. The commenter formerly known as Another Drew wrote:

The market dropped over 200 points while he was on tv being all douchey.

Maybe because actual market players — and trading computers, of course — have better things to do with their time than watch President Obama.

And our fearless leader knew that, too. He wasn’t talking to the actual market people; he was talking to everybody else.

    The snarky Dana (3e4784)

  97. “What does a persons skin color have to do with anything?”

    Dunno.

You’re the supporter of the Jim Crow/New Black Panther/We’ve Always Loved Racists Party.

    You tell me.

    You’re the expert.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  98. In other words, stop calling people here racist.

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  99. In other words, stop calling people here racist.

I will call a spade a spade, here or anywhere else. Now if you want to go on protecting racist speech and providing a home for racists on this blog, well that’s your affair. It’s a free country, 1st amendment and all that.

    Spartacvs (2d9449)

  100. Really? Free speech, no holds barred? Now, you do work, don’t you, sparticvs? I think we could all come up with a list of epithets for you to try out in front of your boss, or in the home of the one human friend you have.

    Go for it!

By the way, what is the word for “hypocrite” in Japanese?

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  101. Oh, and sparticvs? You can’t call anything anything here, without sockpuppeting and playing weird games. So your premise is…invalid.

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  102. Comment by Spartacvs — 8/9/2011 @ 9:01 am

If I was using your tactics, I’d point to your use of the word spade as proof you’re a racist, even though it’s nothing of the kind. As it is, tick tock. You’re nothing but a partisan Hax, and you know you’re busted (again).

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  103. Incompetent hack is what he is.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  104. “Racist dave:”

True. I’m prejudiced against the race of Lefty pond scum.

I do like human beings though.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  105. “I will call a spade a spade”

    Racist.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  106. Its hilarious how hard Spartacvs works to discredit himself.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  107. Stashiu3, I’m sure he will need to steel himself for further battle with grande cinnamon dolce latte with no foam.

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  108. And he is infesting other threads. I guess he knows he will be gone soon, whistling “Flight of the Valkyries.”

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  109. I trust everyone who has been here a while realizes who ol’ sparty is now. The most famous of his names was Hax Vobiscum. He’s had many, many others and I’ve spent many hours behind the scenes dealing with him. Forgive me for enjoying the realization that he can now be dealt with decisively whenever we like.

Hax really doesn’t like me. Do you Hax?

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  110. Racist Dave:

    For your edification

    Spartacvs (2d9449)

  111. Stashiu3, is he the one who flounced off with “I work here is done”?

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  112. “The New Black Panther Party provoked a melee outside Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney’s campaign headquarters after she had lost a Democratic primary election to her opponent, Hank Johnson. The NBPP’s Chief of Staff, Hashim Nzinga, had been acting as security detail for McKinney…”–wiki

NBBP is used the same way the Klan used to be used…as thug enforcers for Dem-scum pols. When they aren’t doing that, NBBP members are calling for the murder of “cracker” babies, and genocide against the so-called White Race.

I think everyone knows who the real racists are.

    Dems…same as always.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  113. Stashiu3, is he the one who flounced off with “I work here is done”?

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  114. A Sarah fan. Tell me, are you rooting for Bachman now or still holding out hope princess snow grifter will throw her hat in the ring?

That’ll be President “snow grifter” 18 months from now, punk.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  115. That’ll be President “snow grifter” 18 months from now, punk.

Oh dear, do I tell him or will one of his friends here step in with an intervention?

    Spartacvs (2d9449)

  116. “The phrase predates the use of the word “spade” as an ethnic slur against African-Americans, which was not recorded until 1928; however, in contemporary U.S. society, the idiom is often avoided due to potential confusion with the slur.”

Since Sparty is a lefty Dembot, and his group has a long, long history of systematic racist behavior (slavery, the Klan, Jim Crow, Executive Order 9066, the New Black Panther Party, the Congressional Black Caucus, the NAACP…always it’s about race with these guys), I think we’ll just have to assume that he’s NOT avoiding it because, like his cohorts, he’s a stone-cold racist.

He’s just a little confused about who he’s supposed to be racist against.

Using anti-black racist slurs, when your great God Obambi is a black guy??? Shame on you. You’re supposed to be racist against white people nowadays, not against black people, like in the old days.

Step up into the 21st century, man.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  117. Stashiu3, what clever names has “Sparticvs” used in the past? I mean other than that silly and pretentious Hax business? And isn’t he supposed to be a journalist? I mean, sort of?

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  118. Oh, and Sparticvs? Are you still posting, after all this? Really?

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  119. “princess snow grifter”

More racism from Sparty-tard. “Snow” is obviously just a codeword for “White”.

    Shame on you, you racist.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  120. I may gather them together again after I get back. I’m out for a while. I’m not putting him in moderation, so it’ll be interesting how he reacts. On the one hand, he hates me. On the other, he’s really down to a static IP that would make it extremely inconvenient to try and comment here if he was placed in moderation or banned again.

    Pins and needles.

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  121. What an extraordinarily silly WP page! The idea that “to call a spade a spade” is somehow racist is an obvious joke; that Sparticvs Hax took it seriously and cited WP to rebut it is hilarious.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  122. Why on earth would he hate you, Stashiu3? For keeping him from playing games on someone else’s blog? He should have his own blog, like that Kman fellow.

Except no one reads it apparently. So I think I get it. It’s about attention.

    Simon Jester (51bacd)

  123. “princess snow grifter”

More racism from Sparty-tard. “Snow” is obviously just a codeword for “White”.

    Shame on you, you racist.

And “princess” is sexist, and “grifter” is homophobic, so he’s got the trifecta.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  124. #123

Racist, sexist and homophobic is no way to go through life, Sparty!

    Wise up.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  125. Anyhoo…I notice that the market hasn’t fallen 600 points today (yet).

That’s good. I’d hate it if the antics of the Great Black Dope were costing me tens of thousands of dollars EVERY day.

    Dave Surls (b2ed4c)

  126. According to the libs from the zoo
If we don’t like Obama, boo hoo!
    They say they can see
    That racists we be
But I hate the white half of him too!

    The Limerick Avenger (f68855)

  127. Milhouse – true to form, you are hilarious.

    “grifter” is homophobic

? look it up, you got a dictionary?

“Snow” is obviously just a codeword for “White”.

snow is un-encoded, she’s from AK

princess is mildly sexist, I’ll give you that.

    Spartacvs (2d9449)

  128. Clean up on Aisle 127: more squirrel poop left on our doorstep.

    Hax, you are a hack.

    Simon Jester (aa6399)

  129. Stashiu3 – are you some sort of a moderator here?

Good job on moderating all the racists/ homophobic comments – Not.

    Spartacvs (2d9449)

  130. Use the tag, the Russians coined, the Huntress, or Okhanitsa

    ian cormac (81c5c2)

  131. So…Hax…are you calling anyone here a racist? Please be specific. Pretty please. Tick tock.

    Simon Jester (aa6399)

  132. Another 500 point drop thanks to Obama the Downgrade President.
