  2. Barrett Brown is a douchenozzle.

  3. The targets of the searches were not named

Were any of them in Illinois? I think just NY CA FL and NJ.

This is a great step. Could lead to more searches.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  4. 3. Dustin

Perhaps the FBI cannot name the ones who are under 18. At least one named here.

    16 arrests

10+ FBI agents turning up at 6 AM at a teen’s house…I think the teens are gonna start squealing.

  6. So, Paddy, you’re a prosecutor in the Los Angeles county gang unit. Would you put on a do-rag, baggy pants, and walk down Western Ave at midnight, hollerin’ at random gang bangers? If the answer is no, do you think it’s wise to try something like that on my street?

You, sir, are a lulzcow, and if you carry on in this fashion someone will notice and decide to milk you. ~cough~ beandogs ~cough~

Can someone explain what this means?

The coughing surrounds a link to a story about Neal being a ringleader for harassing people.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  7. Illinois is next on the list. This was an event to get the teens to squeal on the “Big Fish”…

    goatsred (b20383)

  8. Koam, I believe Cleary’s investigation was from June, and may not have been raided today.

They did name Jordan, but I have no idea if it was he or someone in his family being stung.

Thanks, though. This is a very interesting story.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  9. Where did that come from, Dustin?

    JD (ce7dc6)

  10. JD, I’m sorry, I edited my comment and dropped the hyperlink.

    Neal Rauhauser wrote that.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  11. JD, here’s the more direct link.

The other link is to a comment asking Neal why he’s believing Brett Kimberlin, and asking Neal what he means by that latter part.

I think it raises a few decent point.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  12. Dustin – All the lies on that Indict Breitbart site are hilarious. Sounds like a Friedman/Kimberlin knowing disinformation operation.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  13. I just hope we do not torture these poor hackers after they are arrested the way we have Bradley Manning. We don’t need yet another Abu Ghraib!

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  14. sniff, reaches for kleenex.

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  15. knowing disinformation

There’s a lot of paranoia in Neal’s blogging. He will assert something without evidence, and then link it later as when he laid out the case.

Like Peter Pavel… did Neal show any reason to think Patterico has told Peter to do anything? Does Neal even know if Patterico has even contacted him?

    Of course not.

And if Neal had some basis for linking the two, he would show it. Clearly he wants to link them. That he doesn’t shows he’s either lying to link them, or he’s a paranoid fool.

The indictbreitbart site is terrific. You’d almost think Breitbart was behind it. It’s satirical, even if by accident.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  16. 6. Dustin, it’s a veiled warning/threat: Patterico would risk harm dressing like a gang-banger and shouting in the ghetto, and runs a similar risk running on Neal’s street on the Internet. The beandogs, a group used to harass, are value-added to the threat.

    jeffeneff (707f3d)

  17. It’s not even veiled, right? Neal is openly threatening Patterico. Granted, of some kind of computer oriented response with his non-pipsqueak hackings, or maybe even just harassment, but he takes an example of a gang prosecutor’s fate should he holler at ‘gang bangers’ at midnight (in other words, gangs murdering a poser), and then links a story about how he was responsible for something terrible.

    The veil is pretty thin.

Who else likes to threaten Patterico? Hmmm…

Anyway, if Peter Pavel is out there, I wouldn’t mind hearing from you too. You seem to have a problem with Neal. I’m not interested in harming the guy using illegal intrusions into his computer or servers or whatever, but if you do know something about him that we don’t, we could use insight.

Someone on twitter could tweet my comment to him @peterpavel1.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  18. I thought anonymous was the good guys and they fought the legion of evil ex-anonymous hackers what mischievously brought Sony to its knees

    happyfeet (a55ba0)

  19. Oh my, now that Scyphers Murders comment on Neal’s Kos diary has been deleted. What is Neal afraid of?

    daleyrocks (bf33e9)

  20. happyfeet, I know there is a diversity of opinion among people who consider themselves anonymous as to what they should be doing under the auspices of anonymous.

And then there are people who call themselves anonymiss. Apparently they didn’t feel comfortable being anonymous without their favorite identity grouping.

Emma_A: I don’t take it very seriously. Some are for and some are against. One has to expect that in any new movement. I sense some hostility. Some people think that women should shut up and let the men do the talking. That ain’t gonna happen, boys. We’re determined to make our voices heard and we want you with us. That’s my goal, to make this a joint effort with men and women working together for the freedom of women. AnonyMiss is a fledgling entity learning to fly, and we will.

Why not call it anonymister, then?

Emma_A: I see it as the genesis of a women’s movement which seeks to include both women and men; to work towards the freeing of the female underclass in all societies. For instance, here in the West there is a huge war on women by the Republican party in America. The latest absurdity is by Representative Bobby Franklin trying to criminalize miscarriage. If you miscarry then you could get the death penalty. I have no words to describe the absurdity of that.

    Uh. …

Anyway, I can see why hackers weren’t enthusiastic about the idea of this droning political advocacy. Sure maybe wikileaks can get them excited, but the few interested in this kind of stuff were bound to have a hard time rallying the troops.

Anyway, I don’t really understand the reason to anonymously support social issues in this country. I’m not saying it should be a requirement that people be named, but it just seems strange to actually go out of your way to be a secretive force for… rights people already openly exercise.

Maybe I don’t grok. Are they suggesting ‘ops’ against political opponents, instead of just taking their case to the people? I hope Clarence Thomas has a good firewall.

I guess this is an improvement over KKK style political actions, but I just don’t understand why someone would think they are right, and yet need more than an argument in this society to prove it.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  21. Oh my, now that Scyphers Murders comment on Neal’s Kos diary has been deleted. What is Neal afraid of?

    Comment by daleyrocks —

He’s afraid people will read it.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  22. That threat by Rauhauser is not at all covert.

    Birdbath (19803d)

  23. I was thinking the same thing. Calling that threat not overt is like calling Michael Moore not fat.

  28. Death penalty crimes: hacking, graffiti, computer virus writing, car chases.

    Birdbath (19803d)

  29. 17. 23. etc.

“I was only trying to tell him he’s in a dangerous area of the Internet, where wild people might fling scurrilous posts at him.” I’m not trying to justify this in any way. Neal has some understanding of how to threaten like a tough guy and stay on this side of the law. So far, anyhow.

    jeffeneff (707f3d)

  30. Jeff, are you quoting Neal or paraphrasing a defense he might offer?

Either way, I think you’re right. He’s threatening someone who isn’t a coward. And he’s doing it in a cowardly way.

Does he think this is anything but pathetic? Honestly? Comparing himself to Neo while he brags about his twitter bot software?

Anyway, clearly he thinks being a hacker is a great accomplishment as does he about his twitter bot program

The other thing is our Twitter Press Agent, which I am not going to just hand over to the unwashed masses. Twitter relentlessly hunts spammers and automated content sources, but our stuff, built using the principles of voice network congestion management, looks so realistic their automated patrol stuff doesn’t see it as a problem. It also ‘feels’ nice to humans, as it quietly whispers links to things they want to see, without overwhelming a conversation. Unless, of course, someone uses the ANNOY injector, but we won’t talk about that here, now will we?

My guess is this software doesn’t exist. He actively recruits actual people to simply say outrageous things to others, hoping to troll a reaction. That’s not very clever, since obviously the one who looks awful in twittergate was not the victim of the harassment, but the progressive democrat screaming about how he just bought an abortion in some old lady’s name, or wants to hate f*** Bristol Palin or whatever. Doing that on twitter is not what I’d associate with ‘Neo’, but more like what I’d associate with some chubby punk in mom’s basement.

But like I said, I think this is misdirection, perhaps aimed at those like Ron Brynaert. A polite pleasant Turing passing AI twitter feed linking things you want to see until the ‘annoy’ feature is activated? Or a reason for the paranoid to think anyone who suddenly differs from them is a bot, leading to chaos?

Neal doesn’t do subtle. He doesn’t understand wit. He thinks his audience needs the words ‘open source’ linked to the definition. We are not talking about a conference of the elite.

That’s not to say Neal isn’t scary. I openly admit I am worried about what he’s going to do to the people he’s obviously furious with. But as a man, I find he doesn’t measure up. I respect progressives who openly champion their views and are man enough for a real debate. Idea vs idea.

I don’t respect someone whose political plan is to harm or harass those he disagrees with until they are removed from the debate, leaving them the victor by default. That’s irrational.

The USA uses elections. That means your course of action politically should involve figuring out what’s right and then explaining why it’s right to the voters. All the warfare crap is pathetic.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  31. NEal RauHauser is a f@cking cowardly douchenozzle. A vile vile vile boy.

    JD (85b089)

  32. Might I also add that being able to evade twitter bot detection seems trivially easy.

It’s pathetic that Neal found it a challenge. It’s pathetic.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  33. Might I also add that being able to evade twitter bot detection seems trivially easy.

It’s pathetic that Neal found it a challenge. It’s pathetic.

    Dustin (b7410e)

  34. 30. Dustin,

    (Are you “buyviagracheap”?)

I was unclear – I was paraphrasing the sort of excuse Neal would give. I think you’re right that he is enjoying threatening his twitterbot stuff. Creating bots is fairly trivial; Pat found one copying his tweets. whether targeted or not, I think you just have to say “who cares” unless there’s something special about them. This is just the craziness of the Internet.

Ron knows just enough about tech to be spooked by everything, and therefore not enough to know when he should be spooked by something special.

    jeffeneff (707f3d)

  35. I know some tough guys. Not crooks or gangsters, regular tough guys. Mean when they need to be. Brick layers, truck mechanics. They’d laugh at me just knowing that I’m reading about Rauhauser. They never threaten anybody.

    Birdbath (19803d)

  36. 30. Dustin, LOLZAAM! just saw the Neo stuff. Ok, he does have half a sense of humor; he’s joking that script kiddies envision themselves as Neo. But see, that’s a j-o-k-e because he’s no script kiddie nosiree! In fact, he’s such a l33t haXor that he’s figured out how to run Unix in Windows using off-the-shelf software! This has to be funny even to his presumably better-skilled hacker friends.

    jeffeneff (707f3d)

  37. I posted about the Neal post in the gargantuan thread before seeing y’all were talking about it here.

In addition to threatening me, he boasts of having a cute bottom. Those are his words. And he posted it on the Internet.

    So, there you have it.

Can someone forward Andrew Sullivan’s contact information to him? All Neal needs is a little (pun intended) love. 😉

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  39. Ok, he does have half a sense of humor; he’s joking that script kiddies envision themselves as Neo.

I think he was saying he thinks script kiddies see NEAL as Neo. He’s got some kind of complex. But that’s fine.

Your take on how this comes across is exactly right.

But see, that’s a j-o-k-e because he’s no script kiddie nosiree! In fact, he’s such a l33t haXor that he’s figured out how to run Unix in Windows using off-the-shelf software!

And then he managed to get a bot onto Twitter. Unprecedented.

Anyway, I asked you “Jeff, are you quoting Neal or paraphrasing a defense he might offer?” I am pretty sure it’s obvious to everyone but me (and pretty likely to me) that you aren’t quoting him… just offering the best defense he could come up with.

  42. 37. Dustin, sorry, I was paraphrasing what I expect his answer would be. Meant to include it in last post, but must have deleted it.

    jeffeneff (707f3d)

  43. Jeff, thanks for humoring me and clarifying.

I think it was already pretty clear, but I just wanted it crystal clear. If Neal had tried to walk this back a little, I’d at least want to know about it.

Koam, thanks for the update. Seems like a rather planned out sting. Probably the result of a lot of hard work, and not yet fully realized in scope.

We’ll see what happens from here.

  44. O/T…
    Is the LAT for sale???
    http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2011/07/18/is-the-los-angeles-times-for-sale/

    Would Rupert buy it?

    AD-RtR/OS! (b87a7f)

  45. No Satan would buy it.

  46. Let the LA Times employee pension fund have first crack at buying the dog, and serve them all right. Last I heard the boys from Chicago owned it.

    ropelight (338845)

  47. rope, if you read the link, you would see that Tribune (Zell) has reorganized the print side of the company into two entities:
    The LAT;
    and everyone else.
The speculation “on the street” is that the re-organization is being done for one reason only:
    to unload the LAT.

  48. Can’t the FBI be more specific than “California” ? Really, where?

    Wesson (914281)

  49. Who here hasn’t boasted of having a cute bottom?

The funny thing about Andrew Sullivan, is the only time I visit his site is when there is new Sarah Palin news. He doesn’t disappoint. That man is the most insane blogger ever. He’s got a Dan Rather complex where he continues to defend the most asinine talking point ever. It’s fun to read his disaster.

This time it is that Sarah Palin is not the mother of her children, or that she is a horrible abusive mother if she really is the mother of her children. Even if that absurd claim is true, why would Andrew want to be the pointman on that? It is so silly. Well, newsweek needs to get web hits some way. Works for me.

    Wesson (914281)

  50. Palin abuses her children?

Why doesn’t he say she throws them into concentration camps and gases them.

    DohBiden (d54602)

  51. Saw elsewhere that one of the search warrants the FBI executed was at the home of a 13 year old.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  52. #46, AD, I agree and I’d like to see the LAT’s employees get stuck holding the bag.

    ropelight (b6290d)

  53. I would love for the leftys to explain why raising taxes on republicans will solve the deficit?

    DohBiden (d54602)

  54. 35.I know some tough guys. Not crooks or gangsters, regular tough guys. Mean when they need to be. Brick layers, truck mechanics. They’d laugh at me just knowing that I’m reading about Rauhauser. They never threaten anybody

Two of most extremely dangerous guys that I know well( A 10th-degree Shaolin Grand Master and international head, and one of his senior students, an 8th degree Master) would never lower themselves to threaten anyone. I have watched the 10th-degree walk away from a university football star that challenged him. They are confident and secure in their strength, therefore don’t feel the need to prove it. I have never heard either of them brag, although I’ve watched them do some astonishing things. If they had to use their abilities (It would have to be a life-threatening situation) they would not blow threats at someone, they would just act.

    Meh (ad80a5)

  55. @patterico

In addition to threatening me, he boasts of having a cute bottom.

And yet he removed his “Q” photo of his facial profile off his blog.

Interesting that he wants us to consider his ASS.
    Freudian slip?
