A number of politicians and pundits on the right (e.g., Sen. Mitch McConnell, Charles Krauthammer — though the latter is singing a different tune this morning) tend to view the current standoff between Pres. Obama and Congressional Republicans over raising the debt ceiling in large part through the prism of the blame game. (Oddly, Karl Rove claims Obama owns this problem, even though he was fearing a government shutdown would boost Obama a few months back.) The GOP — and elements of the right more generally — remain haunted by the ghosts of 1995, when legend has it Bill Clinton vanquished Newt Gingrich in a standoff, destroying the GOP brand and easing the path to Clinton’s re-election.

To be sure, you don’t have to look far to find a public opinion poll showing the public will blame the GOP if the debt limit is not raised. But does it matter? (more…)

And for this week’s Friday Frivolity, I have good news and bad news for Marine Sgt. Scott Moore.  He has become famous for making this video asking actress Mila Kunis…

First, the good news: she said yes.  And despite silly rumors that it would be impossible for her to attend because she would be shooting a movie, it’s still on.

Now the bad news.  She has also said this about casual sex:

I can give you my stance on it: It’s like communism—good in theory, in execution it fails. Friends of mine have done it, and it never ends well. Why do people put themselves through that torture?

So dude, don’t set your hopes too high on this date.

On the other hand, she doesn’t like communism, so that’s something…

Yes, they’re closing down the 405 freeway here in Los Angeles this weekend.

I have to pick up my mom at LAX tomorrow, so I’m with Hitler on this one.

A little too much cursing and it drags on too long, but the idea is good.
