Crooks & Liars Misconnects The Weinergate Dots

Filed under: General — Stranahan @ 9:08 am

[Guest post by Lee Stranahan]

It’s clear that left will embrace any possible conspiracy theory that floats by them, especially if Andrew Breitbart is within 300 feet of a story. Over at Crooks & Liars, my old Twitter friend @Karoli has sadly gone off the rails again. Here’s how she starts…

Yes, another Anthony Weiner post. Except this one confirms what I suspected: that the conservatives who "caught" him tweeting that picture were trying to set him up.

She quotes the recent NYT piece on “Betty & Veronica” and comes to a conclusion that isn’t in the piece…

I’m not excusing the fact that he did, in fact, send lewd photos and create a stupid distraction for the better part of three weeks. But this story highlights the fact that someone smelled blood and tried to take it to the next level by creating fake underage accounts to lure him into sending photos or flirting. It appears that he did not take the bait, but the fact that there was bait should make everyone sit up and take notice.

As long as identities are nothing more than the next invented email account, everyone is vulnerable. In Anthony Weiner’s case, he should have realized that he made himself a target just by standing up like he did, and been leery of any overly friendly people online. Instead he let himself be flattered by it.

(emphasis added)

Except – the timeline is backwards. The smelling of blood happened BEFORE the Tweet Heard ‘Round The World happened. If Weiner was ‘targeted’, it happened before everyone knew what he was up to…but apparently, somebody knew what he was up to.

Anthony Weiner made himself a target, all right; not for his supposed high ideals but by his habit of taking conversations with woman who liked his political stands as an opportunity to drop sexual innuendo, out of context dirty talk and to expose himself. He wasn’t entrapped in any possible way. He literally couldn’t have been entrapped unless  you define ‘talking to women’ as entrapment.

  1. So …. any OTHER stories going on the world this year?

    Anything NOT involving Weiner’s weiner?

Just curious. Carry on with your next 12 weiner-obsessed posts.

No matter how petty, infantile, or irrelevant.

  8. I’ll be fine reading Weiner stories for as long as the MSM is fine will creating a revisionist history and attempting to rehabilitate him. The story is that he sent unsolicited lewd photos to women and was grooming underaged girls. What others were trying unsuccessfully to tempt him to do is completely irrelevant, even if the NYT times believes it was the only aspect of the story that merited an investigation.

And there’s a bigger story to be explored: why did top Democratic official aid Weiner in the cover-up of his sexual harassment and stalking in the hours and days after he sent the Tweet to the Seattle college student? Yeah — that’s what happened. Don’t try to convince me that the people in charge of our national defense are so stupid that they actually believed his “hacking” story. But let’s assume they did. What emergency measures did they take to insure that other members of Congress weren’t hacked and that national security wasn’t compromised? What did Obama do in light of the alleged hacking?

So no, this story isn’t over by a longshot. It is THE issue of the 2012. Every single Democratic candidate must be asked over and over exactly what they did to protect America after the “hack” of a Congressman. And if they knew it wasn’t a hack, why did they defend and protect a sexual predator?

    I love this.
In life, there has always been the possibility that someone isn’t who he says he is. That was true before the internet was even invented.
That possibility doesn’t make you vulnerable. What makes you vulnerable is misbehavior with people you do not know.

  10. So no, this story isn’t over by a longshot.

Yet, MayBee, don’t you get the distinct impression that many *want* this story to be over? As the days unfold, that will be the thrust of anything to do with Weiner – there is no story, leave the poor guy alone to rebuild his life, stop the absurd hunt for boogeymen, etc.

  11. As long as identities are nothing more than the next invented email account, everyone is vulnerable

How about Weiner’s identity? It was the most “invented” of all, even though he didn’t change his name or create a fake e-mail account. He masqueraded as a champion of women’s rights while preying on them under his own name. His perversion posed the threat, not the identity he used with others or his means of communication.

Dana, that narrative started the second he resigned. Just stick “Weiner” through Google News and see how many stories there are eagerly predicting his comeback. They’re actively giving him advice on how to re-emerge as a political player.

Well, in that regard he merely joins the company of Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Chris Dodd, Jesse Jackson, John Edwards, and a whole host of other faux-feminists. Remember that during the Monica Lewinsky mess, none other than Gloria Steinem in essence admitted that the only criteria that matters for male politicians is if they (1) support unrestricted abortion on demand and (2) buy in to the whole panoply of left-wing social programs geared towards women (free healthcare, free daycare for kids, generous welfare, etc.). If they are onboard with that agenda, they have a free pass to chase women to their heart’s content.

  15. The Democrats have controlled the terms of debate for so long that they are used to getting away with stuff that nobody in their right mind would think he could walk away from. They aren’t used to getting caught, and they are even less used to having their feet held to the fire when they’re caught.

The Muscular Christian/Social Evolution Republicans were just as bad back in the 19th Century. Which is WHY the Democrats got to where they could dictate the terms of the debate.

The Democrats are thrashing around, accusing their opponents of “setting them up” because A) that’s what they would do if they were where the Republicans are now and B) they would rather deal with some kind of eeee-vil conspiracy than with the simple fact that they have gotten sloppy.

Say… with all the talk that Weinergate has ginned-up about how only Republicans can be hypocrites because only they run on family values? I had completely forgotten about all the Dems that protect themselves from charges of hypocrisy by running on misogynist values!

That must be the reason why they are never called hypocrites, right?

    sherlock (62f2cf)

  19. The Democrats and MSM *still* haven’t learned that Internet media has destroyed the MSM’s gatekeeper function. Or rather, they keep learning it and forgetting it until the next scandal. It’s as if they can’t update their mid-20th century mental wiring.

Journalists and journalism professors continue to write anguished articles about how the media writes about trivial scandals (invariably about lefties), when they should be covering Weighty Matters of the Public Trust. They still don’t get it. They’ve lost control.

    Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (6d49ed)

  20. That must be the reason why they are never called hypocrites, right?

For Weiner, the hypocrisy charge is easier to make because of his legislative record.

    Protecting Children On the Internet

“In early 2007 my office did a study that found that over 85% of registered sex offenders in New York City live less than five blocks from schools, and 670 sex offenders live within just two blocks. Some offenders are even closer, permanently residing less than 500 feet away from unwitting parents, educators and children.

“Along with several colleagues in Congress, we introduced & passed the KIDS (Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual Predators) Act of 2007, a bill to require sex offenders to register their e-mail and instant message addresses with the National Sex Offender Registry. The “Kids Act’ implemented one of my six recommendations to keep a closer eye on sex offenders both near school grounds and online. I also proposed stricter GPS tracking of sex offenders, tougher enforcement of registration laws and more public disclosure of sex offender data.

“Sadly, the Internet is the predator’s venue of choice today. We need to update our strategies and our laws to stop these offenders who are a mere click away from our children. . .

  22. Bradley,

That sort of renders moot the attempts to rationalize Weiner’s behavior by the left as they whined it didn’t matter because he didn’t run on a family values platform.

Well, okay, maybe he didn’t *specifically, but clearly he considered predatory internet behavior of the utmost importance – so important that he used his position and his office to make it a public priority as well. So there’s that stunning bit of hypocrisy.

*About that family values thing: shouldn’t that be the default position of everyone running for public office? Isn’t the family and the values that keep the American family – whatever that family looks like – the backbone of our country, equally important to the left as well as to the right?

  29. Looking into what form the fake IDs for Betty, Veronica, & Mrs. Betty were obtained in by Tommy Christopher:

I searched the original TC piece and the letters “fax” don’t appear. He says he was ablte to verify the story and the identities of the two girls on page 2, bottom http://www.mediaite.com/online/andrew-breitbart-did-not-run-weinergate-evidence-which-turned-out-to-be-fabricated/

Colby Hall, TC’s editor, writes: “asking for, and receiving photo identification of all three sources (a driver’s license for the mother, and student IDs for the girls).”

(Note that in an article that is specifically entirely about the TC-obtained evidence falling through on the identity of these 3 ladies, editor Colby Hall says that TC received the IDs themselves – that’s what his words say. He makes no mention of copies, email attachments, or faxes. Sloppy use of language, particularly when this is central thrust of the article…which is supposedly about scrutinizing journalistic standards.) http://www.mediaite.com/online/mediaites-sources-on-weinergate-betty-and-veronica-turn-out-not-to-be-who-they-claimed/

Of course, this was the same Colby Hall who, as reported by…you-guessed-it, Tommy Christopher, thought it was a good idea to go on TV and speculate that the original weiner shot was from a prior Weiner relationship. (Tommy calls this “only fair.”) http://www.mediaite.com/tv/mediaites-colby-hall-on-wpix-weinergate-photo-from-a-prior-relationship/

To be “fair” to Tommy, we do have him to thank for the fun Betty & Veronica monikers.

Jen Preston in NYT is the one who uses the word “faxed” She writes: ” Then, in what seems to be an elaborate ruse, the Twitter user claiming to be Nikki Reid and then a woman claiming to be her mother contacted Tommy Christopher, a correspondent for Mediaite, the media blog. After first communicating online, Mr. Christopher said, the woman dismissed claims of incriminating evidence against Mr. Weiner and accused members of the #bornfreecrew of harassing her daughter and her daughter’s friend. The woman also made a statement, which offered a forceful defense of Mr. Weiner.

She repeated this by phone to Mr. Christopher, who insisted the woman provide documentation confirming her identity. The woman faxed over a copy of a California driver’s license with her name, Patricia Reid, at a Los Angeles address, as well as school identification for the girls. But it turns out that the driver’s license and the school identification were fake, according to California state officials and school district officials.”

  30. Wait. So the Crooks An Liars position is that someone from the vast right wing conspiracy created a couple of fictional characters, made them the picture of innocence, then had them sing the praises of A Weiner in such gushing terms that it was difficult to tell the difference between their statements and something the Weiner PR team might cook up?

  34. It looks like the B&V story line was an attempt to entrap the #bornfree group and the Bigs.

The most interesting part is that we now know that Genette had private exchanges with Rep. Weiner earlier. in the latest NYT piece she is quoted as saying she notice the odd behavior of Nikki Reid and discussed this issue with Rep. Weiner. That appears to be what lead Rep. Weiner to stop following Nikki.

    Joe

    Joe Smith (54c0c1)

  35. Sue,

Correct, Jennifer Preston actually tried to verify the ID information that was sent to Tommy C. Tommy had just verified that the address was valid, near Hollywood High School and so it would be logical to assume that B&V went there.

He did not do the real work to verify his sources for this very important story!

    Joe

    Joe Smith (54c0c1)

  36. #30 Joe, thanks.
#32 Joe, good point. I should mention that GC was explicitly focused on #bornfreecrew and w/ the supposed Betty / Veronica “targets” before this all went public. More indications that this “smart” co-ed was possibly working with RAW to thwart #bornfree members and the @AndrewBreitbart, aka The Bigs, as you put it.
#31, Sue, hard to say. TC could have told NYT_Jen that Mrs. Betty had faxed ID copies to him. On the other hand, some people of a certain age think “fax” first when they hear something was sent. Dunno how Jen got them from TC. Shame that Colby didn’t care enough to even clearly explain what went on with the IDs as he says that the IDs themselves were given to TC. That would suggest TC went and visited Mrs. Betty or that she used an overnight service. (Both of which I doubt, but we are reading Colby’s words literally.)

    koam (2b4b88)

  37. There’s a recurring “I hate to say this, but” theme going on.

TC says it about AB….that he was right.

and NYT Jen Preston implicitly says it about TC…that he was wrong.

Colby just says TC was right, even though he was wrong. They both were.

I read the Gawker article you linked. The high school girl in question was 17 years, 12 months, and 26 days old on the day she and Christopher Cox (29) met in April 2008. For their second date, he took her to a presidential debate at Hofstra on October 15th. Chances are Cox didn’t send pics of his penis to his future bride. Cox had never been married, so he wasn’t cheating. And when Cox made his play, he played for keeps, not for fun (they were married on June 4, and Hillary attended, among other luminaries).

There’s no comparison between Cox and Weiner, except in the unfortunate jokes their names conjure up. But, nice try.

I do not understand declaring his home as campaign headquarters, though. I would expect the campaign to write off the rent, which is a more substantial deduction, and makes more sense.

That is curious, and an explanation would be nice.

  69. I’d love Stranahan to compare her phone # to Tommy’s phone # for Patricia Reid.

  70. If you were looking to set up a fake twitter account, wouldn’t reusing an abandoned twitter handle be a good idea?

  72. Is there an example of Karoly being “on” the rails? She is a flack-hack plain and simple. And until she releases the pics Wiener-boy sent to her, she really should shut the hell up!

  74. Maybee, he sent me a message today. Said he changed PatriotUSA1773 to PatriotUSA90210. (Latter was linked to – had the old tweets of- former).

He said he was not Dan Wolfe or PatriotUSA1776, just a joke account.

  75. Thanks, SarahW. Do you know if he still has the screencap of Genette taunting him for not knowing who JohnReid9 was. Was trying to figure out if it meant nothing, or if it meant she had communicated with the original patriot and thought this was “him”.

  76. Am wondering if GNC used the “girls” to try to get gossip/information on Weiner, but had no idea what he was really up to.
