Patterico's Pontifications

The Greatest Day Ever

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:39 pm

An annoying lefty Congressman calls a press conference in which he is abjectly humiliated for his recent lies. But just beforehand, Andrew Breitbart commandeers the press conference, lectures the media, and demands an apology from the Congressman for slandering him.

Which he gets.

Am I dreaming? As one of Weiner’s young admirers asked: is my life for real?

  1. But unfortunately Patterico, we already know the DNC strategy for burying the Weiner story:

  2. Yes. He is 100% right … he SHOULD get an apology for being falsely smeared as a hacker. Horrible.

  3. So glad you posted this video, Patrick!

  4. I spent all afternoon positively giddy.

Two press conferences for the price of one – oh, and better yet, in one, a giant bestrode the stage, and in the other, a sniveling brat.

    Wonderful, wonderful afternoon!

  5. It seems like Breitbart had the congressman’s back to the wall, but then pulled back from presenting the “x-rated” pictures. He didn’t need to dig the knife in and so he didn’t.
I thank you Andrew, for sparing all of us.
Better then I would have done.

Way more ethical then our opponents have been in similar situations.

    Is there an applause tag?

    He deserves an ovation.

  6. This was a significant “changing of the guard” moment for the nation.

  7. funny for me the greatest day ever was when my wife married me.

but this was pretty fun, too.

  8. Funny the greatest day ever was seeing Anthonys weiner.

Not that i’am gay or anything.

  9. Of course, I never cared for Weiner, and I really believed he would skate on this, and actually I still do on a somewhat different trajectory.

I also hate to say this because it probably says more about me than Weiner, but when this whole thing broke, it made me happy.

Sure, the right has plenty of a-hole blowhards who deserve a good taking down. Plus there are plenty of conservatives who have done the same or worse.

Yet, when rightys are caught doing something monumentally stupid, the reaction is always the same: Stopping these crazed grandma killers is the most important thing since the Nazis invaded Poland and racism, too.

So there is a satisfying sense of satisfaction when a lefty is caught being a dirty old man.

But, with Weiner, it was something more. He lived the lefty dream. Multi-term Congressman who would shriek at the top of his voice on the House floor with indignation on every slight of the right.

He would go on any news show at any time and proclaim the policies of the left and completely ignore any question to make sure his talking points were all that mattered. He treated anyone as dung if they did not see or acknowledge his unquestioned brilliance.

He was an absolute lefty hero what with his truthy power-speaking and all.

Yet, when the chips were down, he lied mightily and hung all of his loyal brown-nosers out to dry.

So, he wiped away his tears and apologized to his wife and Breitbart and swore to carry on. But he managed to forget his ignorant, on-line water-carriers.

They will eventually forget the slight and soon will raise his standard against the heartless right.

That’s what makes me happiest of all. I hate dishonesty and it’s enablers. And there is nothing in this world that can make him right or give his sycophants credibility ever again.

    Sorry for the long post.

  10. I lost my thesaurus, so forgive my satisfying satification.

    Ag80 (1bc637)

  11. Weiner did this just to satiate his ego.

  12. Don’t believe the hype that we residents of ny-9 will vote for him again. There’s a general consensus amongst my neighbors that the guy played his defenders for fools and that he has to go. He will never be Mayor of NYC. NY-9 may be represented by a liberal in 2013, but it won’t be a liberal named Weiner.

We don’t want to become a national joke, like DC did when they re-elected Marion Barry.

    East Coast Chris (c31a9b)

  13. I’m not sure where to begin on this. I went to the TV to watch the big reveal and BAM there’s Breitbart. All I could think was WTF is going on. Then he demands they name one thing that he’s lied about and nothing but crickets. That was awesome!

Then Weiner doing his whole mea culpa and it was nothing but a vindication dance with an apology to Breitbart specifically. That was probably the most painful part for Weiner. His wife, meh what ever, having to apologize to Breitbart on live TV SOUL CRUSHING! After that a lot of told you so to Kos commenters.

Then the progtard tears started flowing and they were delicious, as they always are. The Kos community feeling like they got punked by their hero and their own tech wienies was just icing on the cake. What a great day indeed.

Great work to all the super sleuths involved.

    Johnny 5 is alive (5ccc5e)

  14. A great day, indeed.

But leave it to Bob Beckel to ruin it fo rme. He pointed out on Hannity that NY state has lost two congressional seats. He figures they will just erase the current NY-9 leaving nowhere for Weiner to run. I was hoping for a pick-up in the bluest-of-blue districts. Oh well.

    Ed from SFV (52d4be)

  15. Don’t count on NY-9 going red, the area it consists of is growing increasingly Latino, the Jewish and white ethnic moderates which actually got Weiner into office are leaving in droves. I may not be too far behind them.

    East Coast Chris (c31a9b)

  16. This doesn’t hurt Weiner’s chances in his own district. They love that obnoxious perv.

    Arizona Bob (aa856e)

  17. By the way, I still don’t know what all these people are doing when they Twitter. I waste enough time surfing the political blogs on the internet. Only this one is not a waste. Hail, Patterico!

    Arizona Bob (aa856e)

  18. I will just throw this out.

Weiner hitched his star to the Clintons. If any believes his marriage to Huma was anything more than political, there is a bridge near his district that may be for sale.

Then, Pelosi calls for an investigation.

I would say that the Obamists are salivating and the chances of a serious challenge to his nomination are done.

Poor Weiner thrown under the bus. How will the Clintonistas recover?

    Poor Hillary won’t have a chance until she’s 80-something.

This is turning out better than I hoped. Forget Rove, Rahm is a genius as he sits in Chicago.

    /sarcasm.

    Except, oh, nevermind.

  24. Why is everyone assuming Weiner has “come clean” now? He could just be trying to stop the bleeding before the really juicy stuff comes out.

The way this weasel lied so aggressively last week, I can’t believe people are ready to swallow his “modified limited hangout” at face value.

If it had worked for Nixon, he’d have served out his term.

  26. . He figures they will just erase the current NY-9 leaving nowhere for Weiner to run.

Just remember that to some extent, those seats went to Texas. So while the Weiner scandal may not lose the Democrats the seat, in a very real way, policies in New York and Texas have cost the Democrat party several seats by pushing smart people out of blue states.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  27. I can’t believe people are ready to swallow his “modified limited hangout” at face value.

Well, I didn’t really listen to his confession anyway, but what I did hear sounded like he admitted to the tweet being his. It’s unlikely that isn’t true. Sure, that means he’s covering something worse. Breitbart was on stage because he had leverage over Weiner, and that means there is something worse.

Unless he’s knowingly hitting on underage girls, whatever else there is, be it worse photos or meeting some floozie in person or anything else, it probably isn’t worth worrying about. Granted, he’ll possibly get to keep it a secret.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  28. I’ve heard, or read, that Breitbart is still withholding — out of consideration for Weiner’s family — one extremely graphic photo. If so, wouldn’t it be delicious for Breitbart to stand on principle and decline to release the photo unless and until it’s subpoenaed, e.g., by the House Ethics Committee?

    Beldar (a1d653)

  29. I’m sure most will see the ABC interview of Weiner.

He absolutely dominates this interview, lying very fluidly. I don’t really even understand how he’s doing it. But suddenly, a reporter who wanted to ask why he only followed a select group of young women out of a huge number of people is on the defensive, even being personally blamed for the hassle these women are going through. I kept waiting for the reporter to finally have enough and note the obvious evasion and filibustering. It never happened, though.

Not that I could have handled the interview any better. Weiner is apparently a brilliant and psychotic liar. I doubt he even knows who he really is, and this mindset is why he’s unable to enjoy what should be a very nice life. He’s married to a gorgeous and successful woman and has an enviable ability to make a difference in this country. Of course, the only difference he made in recent years was to scream and demogogue in order to boost his standing. There’s a group of people who adore Weiner and Grayson and the like. They need to carefully analyze why.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  30. If so, wouldn’t it be delicious for Breitbart to stand on principle and decline to release the photo unless and until it’s subpoenaed

I’m sure he won’t drop the photo unless forced. Breitbart is classy and honest in inverse proportion to how damn sure the hard left is that he’s dishonorable.

Hopefully there isn’t some drawn out inquisition about Weiner’s behavior. If it’s unacceptable to use your office and government phone for this (and of course it’s unacceptable), then they have all the data they need.

  33. The sad part will be reflected on this very blog: the Usual Suspects™ will not do what they ought to do—revile Weiner as being antithetical to the standards of the Democratic Party.

They just won’t be able to say it; they will need to support anyone with a “D” attached to their name.

That’s because, of course, it’s not about the politician, or the politics. It’s about how that type of person sees themselves.

Anyone, regardless of politics, should shun this Weiner fellow and the voters should just kick him out. For sexting people? No, for lying about it, multiple times.

Then there is the underaged girls thing.

  36. Breitbart is quite simply awesome. My understanding is the “takeover” of the press conference wasn’t intended but requested by the media who couldn’t hear him when asking him questions on his arrival before Weiner (links: see explanation at 7:05-7:35 in this video, and also Breitbart’s own explanation here, at 2:30 – 3:50), but it was a hugely enjoyable coup anyway.

Am very glad he used the situation to demand, and get, his due apology from Weiner. And when he demanded over and over that the reporters provide one lie Breitbart told — crickets. A beautiful thing to watch.

and the voters should just kick him out.

Liberals will do that?! That assumes many of such people value and respect minimum standards, or standards in general. Keep in mind that the left in today’s era adheres to the mindset of “if it feels good, do it,” and that non-conformist behavior is hip, charming and a civil right. Moreover, liberalism in the government is very crucial to them, so bowing before that is more important than anything else, including fighting true acts of sexism and sexual harassment, not to mention racism.

Beyond that, I can’t figure out why this story is generating so much scrutiny. I don’t care for Weiner — the guy is a weirdo — and I’ve always suspected he was guilty. But there is something out of proportion to the attention his tricky behavior is receiving. After all, we live in the age of post-Clinton and do-your-own-thang, so a desensitized response to trashy activity is becoming the rule instead of the exception.

However, the one aspect of the story that does go way beyond acceptable behavior involves Weiner sending unsolicited pervert-in-raincoat responses to what were generally total strangers. Still, all the commotion towards Weinergate makes me think of the reaction the public would have had decades ago.

Bill Clinton dumbed down what’s acceptable or unacceptable over 10 years ago, so don’t be surprised if all this negative publicity directed at Weiner results in a situation reminiscent of American society following a modified version of the “Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.” IOW, Weiner will stay in office or end up as a celebrity talking head on CNN.

    Mark (411533)

  39. It was pretty hilarious, eh Patterico.

Now one side benefit of this scandal is that Weiner is now discredited as a spokesman for the Democrats talking point.

  41. Liberals will do that?! That assumes many of such people value and respect minimum standards, or standards in general.

44% of his district voted for Mccain. I suspect because of economic concerns. I don’t think it’s impossible for Weiner to be kicked out. Yes, it would be an upset, and yes, it assumes people there have some minimum standards.

DC has a reputation from electing Marion Barry. Will the people in NY1 avoid that?

    Dustin (c16eca)

  42. 44% of his district voted for Mccain. I suspect because of economic concerns.

That district votes very differently in local elections; there’s a strong machine that’s concerned only with who will get more government grants for the community, and makes sure people vote for whoever that is.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  43. Strange days indeed, most peculiar momma. We live at an odd moment in time.

    Mark Johnson (acc41e)

  44. there’s a strong machine that’s concerned only with who will get more government grants for the community

Well, I wonder how good Weiner will be at that. He has some seniority, but he’s a laughing stock now. Can he bring home the bacon?

Though I suppose the kind of candidate I’d like, one who would insist localities not tie their fate to federal dollars anymore, has no chance. Every once in a while, NY produces a RINO with good views on national security (even Weiner once was ok in this regard), common sense on law and order, and still interested in big government.

There’s got to be someone out there thinking about it. Hopefully they win. Frankly, I think Weiner is so morally compromised I’d rather a democrat replace him than he stay in (even though he’s a political liability for the left now).

    Dustin (c16eca)

  45. yes patterico, a great triumph…not. Will it turn Weiner’s district from D+5 to R?
    Doubt it.
