The Most Pathetic Story You Will Hear Involving the Tornado Season (Update: Video Added)

Filed under: General — Aaron Worthing @ 6:42 am

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

Update: For the record, “pathetic” is not necessarily an insult and that was certainly not how I meant it in the title. Here’s Webster’s on the subject:

1: having a capacity to move one to either compassionate or contemptuous pity

That “or” means you could feel either one—compassion or contempt. I feel pity for the dog, but not in a contemptuous way.

So my apologies for being unclear.

Update (II); And Via the Blaze, we’ve got video:

And its hard to watch the footage of him walking on his broken legs.

—————————

From the London Evening Standard:

A puppy crawled home with two broken legs after being thrown high into the air by a tornado that ripped through Alabama.

Mason, a terrier mix, was feared dead after the storm but was found two weeks later by his owners in the wreckage of their home.

You can read the whole thing, but this picture probably is all you need to see.

Part of me thought something like, “the poor little trooper,” genuinely moved by the tale of loyalty exhibited by the pup.

And part of me (the part that is just wrong sometimes) thought of, well… this:

(From There’s Something About Mary.) Joking aside, the last time when talking about the Joplin tornado, I mentioned this site as a way to help if you are inclined.  I will note that many of the links there are to broader disaster relief efforts.  And yeah, they include Animal Rescue charities.

Seriously, you better help these people.  Don’t make me unleash Sarah McLachlan on you…

  1. Why “pathetic”? I find it inspiring.

  2. Meh this is inspiring.

  3. This poor dog wouldn’t have lost his legs if the cap and trade bill had passed.

i was unclear but see the update. pathetic is not necessarily an insult.

  5. What is up with the dog’s legs? Did they get stretched when they were broken? Is it just the camera perspective that makes them look bizarrely long? Or is he just a small dog with abnormally long legs?

    PatHMV (7e100a)

  6. Didn’t mean to suggest “pathetic” was an insult, just not quite the right word. (I might have chosen “poignant.”)

okay, i see. well, still… it made me improve the post anyway.

    Pat

I think its a combo of two things. first, we are not used to seeing its legs straightened out like that. Second, they look even longer because he is missing alot of his hair, so he looks thinner.

I’m not sure how this is inspiring. What choice does the dog have but to deal with it?

Inspiring is if the dog was harmed while trying to save his owner’s daughter or fight off an alligator, or at least used the carnage of the tornado to steal some ribeye from a destroyed Schwann’s truck. That would inspire me.

BTW, I’m a huge softy for dogs. Very saddening picture.

If you don’t find the veterinarian’s words inspiring there’s something wrong with you.

“We didn’t expect anything,” said Lamb. “The donations will go to cover the hardware — the screws and plates — and what’s left over will go into a general fund for those that still need help.”

It’s nice, but inspiring? I need a little more. Folks helping a suffering animal is not rising above and beyond what I would assume any mentally normal person would want to do.

    Sorry.

i think a dog breaking two legs and crawling back to the rubble of the house of his master is a pretty powerful sign of loyalty and all that.

i mean its like that dog who sat waiting for his master to come home in texas, not understanding that he is dead.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  15. Than why did you say it was pathetic then?

    DohBiden (15aa57)

  16. i think a dog breaking two legs and crawling back to the rubble of the house of his master is a pretty powerful sign of loyalty and all that.

    Meh.

    🙂

  17. Oh, now you’re adding video to make me feel like a big jerk?

    Thanks a lot!

That’s a pretty amazing extensive treatment. But inspiring? Look at those dog’s eyes. That guy’s up to something. Don’t trust him any farther than the wind can throw him.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  18. Makes me think of Li’l Brudder. He can make it on his own!

    Robin Munn (347954)

  19. Nice link, Robin.

“I can make it on my own!”

  20. The bits of reality related by survivors of the tornadoes are horrifying.

    htom (412a17)

  21. I bet his legs broke when he tried to catch himself when he came back down to the erf that is one plucky little wug wug

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  22. oh.

    oh dear.

ok this would be exponentially more pathetic

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  23. ugh.

Don’t follow happyfeet’s link without taking seriously his claim it’s exponentially worse. And sexual. Still about dogs.

    My humor bone just vanished.

  24. your all just conservative nazi’s now i must bid you adieu.

  25. Does Charles Johnson blame Sarah Palin for this?

    DohBiden (15aa57)

  26. I’d call attention to the fate of the Dog in Under The Rainbow, a comedy of errors (of sorts) that takes place at the hotel the munchkin actors were all staying at during the filming of The Wizard of Oz.

It’s not a great film, despite having Chevy Chase in it, as well as Carrie Fischer. But there are a few moments like the dog.

  28. what are you talking about everyone except for Mr. Biden knows that the word pathetic is a multi-faceted word what can be employed in lots of ways

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  29. meanwhile National Soros Radio dutifully uses its tax dollars to pass on rumors for to smear a conservative-leaning pop culture figure

I don’t recall them passing on rumors about dirty socialist loser-whore John Edwards when those rumors were rampant and I somehow doubt they’ll be telling their listeners about dick-picture boy’s adventures in twittersleaze.

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  30. Does Charles Johnson blame Sarah Palin for this?

Yes. Along with Newt, Mitch, Haley, G-dub, The Evil One (Rove), Grand Moff Cheney, and Darth Limbaugh.

No, wait, it’s Chris Matthews who includes the last three.

    Smock Puppet (c9dcd8)

  31. at least used the carnage of the tornado to steal some ribeye from a destroyed Schwann’s truck. That would inspire me.

    To… ummm… loot weather-ravaged areas?

    :^D

  32. I think a couple of casters will fix that problem, Happyfeet.

I’m not sure anyone makes a “clue” spell quite that potent. The mana expenses would be waaaay too high anyway.

  33. Makes me think of Li’l Brudder. He can make it on his own!

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother!

  34. I blame Margaret Hamilton…………
