Watch Mike Bettes of the Weather Channel Lose His Composure in Joplin, Missouri

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

I ain’t making fun of him.  You don’t have to be neutral about devastation like this.  And it’s good that it is real to him.

Via Mediaite, which has more on it.  And this page tells you how to help, if you are inclined.  Let this be a matter of personal responsibility instead of the government being the sole help in all of this.

  1. here is how to make sure your monies quickly go to the exact right place

    American Red Cross
    Greater Ozarks Chapter
    1545 N. West ByPass
    Springfield, MO 65803

    Visa or MasterCard. Call: 417-832-9500

    Check by phone. Call 417-832-9500

you can’t really do it online without the American Red Cross intermediating, and if you use the wrong link your monies will end up going to your local red cross instead of the one serving joplin

  2. I do not have any money.

charity does begin at home. when my mother and father were supporting my sister as she got away from her abusive ex, they considered themselves excused from charitable donation for much of the time.

  4. true dat

  5. But i really do not have any money.

  6. One of the horrid truths (as I know them) is how the ARC (or the United Way) are the go-to agencies who receive millions in cash from folks who give from the heart. These agencies then take the money and place it in general funds, and THEN distribute to the specific needs, like Joplin. Remember the $750 million raised DIRECTLY for the families of 9/11 and given to UW? A huge amount of it never went to anything related to 9/11 – it went to other priorities decided by UW AFTER the telethon.

The ARC is top heavy with administration who are compensated like private business executives. It is far to centralized to take care of the various chapter needs. Their budgets get balanced at the expense of aid to areas devastated by tragedy.

By ALL means give to an entity that can be counted upon to segregate the donations to the use intended. To my knowledge, the Salvation Army is one such organization. Perhaps there are specific bank accounts set-up by local banks who, by law (unlike non-profit charities), MUST handle such with the strictest of care/scrutiny.

  7. A truly terrifying sight. You’re right, no criticizing a reporter for showing his humanity. Don’t know how anyone could look on that devastation without feeling great anguish.

  8. I can give you some horror stories about the red cross. Try the Salvation Army where $1 of each $1 goes to assistance.

  9. Like sucessionist Governor Rick Perry begged the federal gov’t for disaster relief and federal funds to combat the flu epidemic.

Conservatives hate the gov’t until they need help.

    Vin (8b3a2d)

  10. van

    lol Perry is a sucessionist?

Well, success is, well a good thing. I wish you great success in life. And Obama is a remarkable unsuccessful president. If only obama was more of a successionist…

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  11. Vin please shoot yourself……………sorry if that went too far.

    DohBiden (15aa57)

  12. doh

why? he praised Perry. Perry is a successionist. I strive to be successful, too. 🙂

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  13. Why is it, Vin, that you post lies?

    SPQR (26be8b)

  14. I think Mr. Perry did very well. Sometimes emotion just stops your tongue, and all you can do about it is breathe. It’s happened to me a couple of times. It’s not a pleasant experience. Rehearsal doesn’t prevent it.

    htom (412a17)

  15. Sorry, Mr. Bettes, not Mr. Perry.

    htom (412a17)

  16. Lies?

Secessionist Texas Gov. Perry who refused stimulus funds asked for the gov’t for a loan to cover unemployment funds, disaster relief, among other things…

Conservatives hate the gov’t until they need help.

    Vin (8b3a2d)

  17. vin

we are talking about your claim that he is secessionist.

    can you prove that?

i suppose it is an improvement that you could spell the term this time.

hey, if at first you don’t secede… try, try again…

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  18. They hate the gov’t until they need the gov’t

    Vin (8b3a2d)

  19. vin

btw, there is nothing at all inconsistent with saying, “the government should help with disaster recovery, but shouldn’t spend like drunken sailors plunging our debt off a cliff.” no serious conservative is proposing the complete abolition of the FG. so your criticique of perry is not even serious.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  20. Secessionist Texas Gov. Perry who refused stimulus funds asked for the gov’t for a loan to cover unemployment funds, disaster relief, among other things…

The comment where he said he opposed breaking the union is used to say he is a secessionist.

The time he noted he refuses unfunded mandates (strings attached to bribes, short term benefit for long term obligation, meant to make the current politician look good, leaving a problem for the future politician to clean up, that every ethical governor rejected) is used to show he rejected all stimulus funds. The time he asked for the help the federal government is obliged to give, and takes money from Texans to fund, is used to prove he’s somehow a hypocrite.

It’s like democrats who say you can’t have a spending cut unless you agree to never rely on the police. Just a jerk level of analysis. Just lies, really.

Conservatives hate the gov’t until they need help.

    Comment by Vin

Rick Perry opposes waste and bad policies, and you say he hates all government? He’s a freaking governor, and has been for ages. You must really be scared of Rick Perry. Maybe I should positively adjust my opinion of him?

    Dustin (c16eca)

  21. Conservatives hate the gov’t until they need help.

    Comment by Vin

And why the hell shouldn’t we? This hypocrisy game can be played the other way, too. If FEMA can’t afford to help people who are dying and homeless, just because they are in a red state, why do we spend so much money on stimulus?

If the government refuses to help citizens in need, why shouldn’t we hate it, and want to defund it as much as we can?

Under the obnoxious Vin view, I don’t deserve the cops to answer 911 calls, and I don’t deserve nice roads, and I don’t deserve any other government. So why should I want a penny of my money going to the government?

This is why Rick Perry is probably the best nominee we can hope for. Democrats make the best case the GOP could hope for when they talk about Perry, laughing about the worst kind of political favoritism. How many people are dead now because FEMA is playing favorites?

Please, keep making that argument. It appeals so much to the hard left because it’s so corrosive to the middle and the right.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  22. “Vin” is a new name for an old cowardly clown. How many different names is that, just this week, Yelverton?

    You forgot RACIST.

  23. It’s ok Mr. Bettes, nothing wrong with a compassionate man crying at a horrible disaster.

    The devastation is heartbreaking.

  24. Good evening, my friend owns three nursing homes in Joplin. So far 15 residents were killed in just one facility. They are still getting info about the other two nursing homes. Please let the families know what is going on with the nursing homes and residents.

  25. Vin is a — uh, you know . . . pile of s***

    Icy Texan (b7f42a)

  26. Thanks for this post, Aaron. Yesterday I saw film of Bettes searching overturned cars for survivors. How nice to see a real human, emotions and all, on my screen.
