Like Superglue to Stupid (II): Did You Know That Oliver Willis REALLY Hates George W. Bush?

Filed under: General — Aaron Worthing @ 1:51 pm

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

As you might have seen ABC News’ article where Bush supposedly gives his “first public reaction” to the killing of bin Laden.  Now you can nitpick that, gee, the official Bush statement the night of would seem to have been the first, but aside from that it is a nice little article:

“I was eating souffle at Rise Restaurant with Laura and two buddies,” Bush said when asked what he was doing when he received the call from President Obama, according to an ABC News contributor who attended the event.

“I excused myself and went home to take the call,” Bush said. “Obama simply said ‘Osama Bin Laden is dead.'”

Bush said Obama described in detail the secret mission to raid bin Laden’s Pakistani compound and the decision he made to put the plan into motion. He told Obama, “Good call.”…

When asked by forum moderator Melissa Lee of CNBC how he felt upon learning the news, Bush said he was “not overjoyed,” explaining that the campaign to track down the 9/11 mastermind was done not “out of hatred but to exact judgment.”

The development is ultimately a victory for the American people, he said.

“The guy is dead. That is good,” Bush said of bin Laden. “Osama’s death is a great victory in the war on terror. He was held up as a leader.”

“The intelligence services deserve a lot of credit. They built a mosaic of information, piece by piece,” he said, claiming no credit for himself.

So it was a nice little article showing us what was most admirable about the man, including his graciousness.  For instance, the closest he came to claiming credit for himself was mentioning the “mosaic of information” that led to bin Laden’s location.  Surely in his mind that includes some of the intel his administration gathered, but one suspects that the reference is more designed to make sure we don’t forget that Eric Holder is still threatening to prosecute those interrogators, rather than any sense of self-aggrandizement.

Still except for that, I have trouble figuring out what anyone could really object to about what Bush said.

But if you really, really hate Bush you will find something to complain about.  So Oliver Willis wrote another idiotic post entitled:

Failed President Bush Still Lives Down To Expectations

And besides quoting from the article this was the sum total of his commentary:

A simple man who once, sadly, had a complex job….

That’s right Bush, the Bad Man Gone Away Now. The Bad Man Gone Away. Now back to your French food and hobnobbing with hedge fund managers.

So seriously, I had no idea what he was even complaining about, so I inquired really politely (okay, not so politely), tweeting:

@owillis Shorter Willis: BUUUUUSH GGGGRRRR! What an idiotic criticism. what do you think he should have done differently?*

To which he replied:

@AaronWorthing speak like an adult, for one

My response:

@owillis lol how did he fail to do so? He complimented Obama for his good call. and? you just hate everything Bush does, that’s all.

And finally he actually starts to offer a coherent explanation:

@AaronWorthing and, again, he could be more than his usual simplistic grunts. look, he’s never gonna do better. is what he is.

My response:

@owillis lol so you are mad that he didn’t over complicate it? is he supposed to write a 1,000 word poem about what a good call it was?

He goes on to ridiculously reiterate the claim that somehow this was not “adult” and I made the obvious point that there are lots of adults who speak plainly and simply—and that is a good thing.  But it’s worth going back to this passage from the ABC News report, which Willis himself excerpted:

“I excused myself and went home to take the call,” Bush said. “Obama simply said ‘Osama Bin Laden is dead.'”

So if Obama says something “simple” that is okay, but if Bush does…

Finally I asked him this:

@owillis Seriously, write the words bush should have said that would have been adequate in your mind.

And then frankly my annoyance with him got the better of me:

@owillis share with us the opus bush should have said in order to avoid being attacked by a fat comic book nerd on the net.

He responded (although missed for a while because of twitter outage):

.@AaronWorthing and there it finally is, the personal insult, because you can’t actually think and express yourself in an adult manner.

And I had already resolved before seeing that to say I was sorry for what I said.  I don’t think it’s the personal nature of the insult that makes it wrong as much as the cheapness and irrelevancy of it.  If criticism or insult of is of a personal nature, but fair, accurate and relevant, I don’t have a problem with it.  But my words violated that standard.  So, I was wrong, and I did send him an apology.

But wow, isn’t that hypocritical?  So he doesn’t like personal insults…

I mean he just spent how many minutes personally insulting our former president?  He even wrote this, in regards to Bush:

@AaronWorthing i demand some sort of intelligence from a leader. not much to ask.

And in my last post on him I showed you how he insinuated that Fox News, the Daily Mail, Pamela Geller, Mike Savage and Glenn Beck were racists.  Isn’t that a personal insult—and a false one, at that?  And at the site right now he calls Donald Trump a racist and a grifter, called the entire state of Florida “one of our stranger, dumber states” (based on the false claim that the state outlawed all sex), and called Newt Gingrich a “morally questionable bully without any gravitas and half a brain.”  The reality is he doesn’t mind personal insults, as long as he is the one making them.

Myself as I said above, I don’t have a problem with personal insults (with the caveats I mentioned).  But for him to pretend he is somehow above that just isn’t honest.

Bush on the other hand is a classy guy.

  4. Bush’s comments were great. It’s amazing that anyone would be upset by them.

It’s nothing Earth shaking. Just Bush being presidential as usual. He complimented Obama, and expressed the complex point about how this was not about hatred.

I honestly have no idea what Willis’s problem is. I also think it’s amusing, after year after year of Obama unable to speak without a teleprompter or amazing gaffes, that someone would still be pretending Bush is some kind of idiot when he speaks like a normal person.

Bush is much smarter and more literate than Oliver Willis, and when Bush has a criticism of someone, he doesn’t just assert something dumbly and repeat it 50 times without anyone seeing the basis.

  6. BECAUSE OF THE HYPOCRISY!

O-dub is at heart another, “Do as I say, not as I do”, progg leftist. We rubish hicktard racists should simply shut up unless we’re speaking to sing the praises of Obama, identity politics, or the transnational multi-culi ideology in general.

We should sit back in reverent awe while adults like him, our betters, decide what is best for us. Oh, and we should also vote in our economic interests-which, not coincidentally are their’s as well!

I think O-dub has once again proved that, at the very least, he’s riddled with BDS, and at worst is a racist and elitist who looks down his nose at anyone who doesn’t agree with him; and has exhibited no reason to take his self-serving views of his own superiority seriously.

NP going off topic. it was actually at insty today where she has been guest blogging.

blogger had a generalized outage that caused alot of sites to become “read only.” like you could see legal insurrection, but Prof Jacobson couldn’t post anything new.

But with ann, something weirder is going on. the latest post suggests that blogger has misidentified her as a spammer.

She does also have a back up. http://althouse2.blogspot.com/

  8. I can easily imagine Bill Clinton making these comments. It would be really amusing to see these people mock comments Clinton made, if they thought Bush said them.

There’s absolutely no reasoning beyond Willis’s outrage of the day (which is amusing, given his mockery of outrage at that racist rapper he loves).

I congratulate the President, the National Security team and the members of our armed forces on bringing Osama bin Laden to justice after more than a decade of murderous al-Qaida attacks.

That’s Bill Clinton’s statement. Had Bush made it, I’m sure Oliver Willis would think it’s just not elite enough.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  9. OT again – Thanks Dustin. Just read an explanation of same at Legal Insurrection. Looks like he lost a bunch of comments too.

  10. It’s hard to believe Blogger.com isn’t well enough aware of their largest politics blogger to avoid those problems.

Then again, if I were her, I’d pay someone to create a better blog on its own server. I imagine it would pay for itself.

  16. “I excused myself and went home to take the call,” Bush said. “Obama simply said ‘Osama Bin Laden is dead.’”

So if Obama says something “simple” that is okay, but if Bush does…

Aaron, Aaron, Aaron. Can’t you read? The article says clearly that after having delivered this simple yet effective opener, “Obama described in detail the secret mission to raid bin Laden’s Pakistani compound and the decision he made to put the plan into motion”. Being the Smart President™, we can surely presume that he did so in proper rhetorical style, and incorporating beautiful figures of speech, metaphors, classical allusions, bons mots, and various other flourishes as befits a polished speak^H^H^H^H^Hteleprompter of his fame.

  17. Look, this guy isn’t even as prominent as Ted Rall or pre-insanity Andrew Sullivan. I guess I just don’t understand why you’re going after this fish in a barrel. The only reason I (and, I suspect, many other readers) have even heard of this foolish is because you shoot at the fish.

    That being said, good shot.

  18. If you picked all of the table scraps out of Oliver Willis’ fat folds and chins, you could feed Sally Struthers, Michael Moore, and Ed Schultz for a month.

  19. Whether we’re talking about gratuitous shots at Bush, or emptying the little debbie box, impulse control is a valuable trait.

/have no idea what Oliver Willis looks like and don’t actually care if he’s tubby, but he appears to have no personal integrity

    Dustin (c16eca)

  20. What was un-adult about President Bush’s comments?

They were so simple, they could easily have been uttered by one of the innocents to whom he read My Pet Goat. An adult would have said “F**k yeah! Up your arse, bin Laden! You Ess F**ckin’ Eh!”

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  21. Isn’t the very act of criticizing O-dub racist? I mean, at least according to O-dub.

That’s OK, you have JD to perform your denunciations; it’s kind of like an exorcism, or confession.

    Bob Reed (5f2db5)

  22. What is the point of conversing with such a stridently angry & profoundly dishonest guy like willis? Seriously. Would you feed a marshmallow to a Grizzly Bear? I dunna think so.

His name is his brand, so whenever I see his byline, I know his work will follow the same formula every time: “Racist ChimpHitler Bush = Evil stupid pretzle-eating warmongery criminal; Obama = Magical lightworker who makes the seas stop rising and is so awesome I cant even describe how awesome he is. And if you disagee you are a racist tea-bagging gun toting jesus loving yahoo who married his sister.”

Thats the sum total of every Oliver Willis column ever written, so why bother feeding such a troll by engaging him in conversation?

If you try and talk to a zoo animal it wont ever try and talk back to you, it will start screaming and flinging feces at you because shock of shocks that’s.what.a.zoo.animal.does.

    DohBiden (15aa57)

  25. Oliver Willis is not articulate.

    Comment by JD —

I noticed that too. I think he’s projecting. He wants to show people he is elite. One way to do that is to write thoughtfully. The other is to pick on an easy target for not being elite enough (granted, this is actually pretty stupid).

Willis’s commentary amounts to interjecting ‘BLACK’ repeatedly while describing a real criticism of a policy that he refuses to even consider. He’s an idiot.

    Dustin (c16eca)

  26. Aaron, this focus on Twitter exchanges is way too much like being told the “I said and then she said and then they said” on a seventh grade playground. You’re wasting your talent with it IMHO.

    Beldar (7c0dd5)

  27. Dustin – that was a double entendre as Oliver “I eat my body weight in Big Macs” Willis once exposed the world to his glorious stupidity by asserting that it was racist to call Barcky articulate.

    JD (0d2ffc)

  28. JD

You can go back even farther than that. In 2005 he got his panties in a bunch when Ed over at Hot Air described Michael Steele as articulate.

To Odub it will always be 1950, but mostly because those big macs are only 15 cents.

  30. Would W or President Obama leave a bigger tip in a restaurant? I’d rather have the Bush table for four, him, Laura, and a couple of buddies. George flirts with the waitresses right in front of Laura and she smiles into her menu knowing he doesn’t mean anything by it.

President Obama orders off the menu to show how big a deal he is. When the waitress screws up the aps Michelle has her fired.

  37. Beldar

i understand your critique, and i certainly don’t plan to do that often.

But twitter is useful in that it allows fools to self-identify. and willis is an important person to talk about. he is a media matters guy and its worth exposing the kind of dishonest, hypocritical and unfair people who work there. I don’t plan to use twitter exchanges too often, but sometimes they take on a “cross examination” like quality and you know sometimes the juiciest things come out in cross-examination. This time i had the goods on him, and they were significantly on twitter. same as last time.

  38. Oliver has been foolish, stubborn, and inane, for most of the time I’ve heard of him, starting with
the ‘Kryptonite to stupid’ slogan, and the apotheosis of this, is his support for Obama.

I like plantain chips, pikachu, but cassava is one step too far.

    happyfeet (3c92a1)

  40. He wants to show people he is elite.

Ridiculous. If you have to try to convince people you are elite, then you simply aren’t.

It’s similar to how a few years ago it was stylish for young chicks to wear clothing with “Juicy” (as in Juicy Couture) spelled out in big letters across their bums – again, if you have to try to convince people…

    Dana (4eca6e)

  41. I wish Bush were more adult like the guy that said a bunch of people he disagreed with needed to have their heads examined. There’s nothing more adult than casually questioning the sanity of people.

You know what else is adult? Thinking you’re so smart that you are fit to weigh in on anything under the sun. Incident 500 miles away that you know nothing about beyond media reports? The cops acted stupidly! A guy is going broke due to high gas prices? Buy a smaller car! Your kids can walk!

Or how about the flip flops? Now he’s so smart about the need to raise the debt ceiling. Five years ago, not so much (let’s hope he wasn’t giving car buying advice back then). If he’s so smart now how could he have been so stupid then? A body double? Rogue teleprompter?

You know what else is adult? Blaming somebody else for your troubles. We all know folks that don’t make mistakes and blame everybody else when something goes wrong. I have one myself, 12 years old last December.

There’s things I can admire about Obama. His Hollywood perfect delivery for one. But because he embodies the charcteristics of an adult? Have we EVER had a less adult, more petty and thin skinned President? My God, what insanity.

    East Bay Jay (19f566)

  43. I guess I could care enough to google Oliver Willis to find out why I should care. But, really, the narrative is always the same. The talking points are the same.

The left enjoys the comfort that everything they say is unique and beyond reproach.

Yet, everything they say is the same thing every lefty says everytime the left says anything.

I can’ get over the feeling that today’s left is nothing more than an echo of the ’60s right: A lost cause basking in the glory of past achievements with no vision for the future.

For a progressive party, do they not have anything fresh, new and exciting to say? That, supposedly, is their brand.

    Ag80 (6134b7)

  44. i demand some sort of intelligence from a leader. not much to ask.

Say, can O Willis prove how much smarter 0bama is by comparing his Ivy League grades with GWB’s Ivy League grades?

It ain’t like GWB was smart enough to do anything complicated like fly airplanes or run businesses or anything….oh wait..he did that.
Surely it isn’t as hard as agitating the uneducated like 0bama did.

    JP (e05949)

  45. [Oliver O. Oliver] called Newt Gingrich a “morally questionable bully without any gravitas and half a brain.”

Oh, boy. Projection big time. Except for the “questionable” part. It’s unquestionable that Ollie has no morals. And he’s a pompous ass, too.

    Nate Whilk (d9e903)

  46. Well Aaron, that’s why you guys can never win. After you insulted him, you should have stuck to it, not apologized, and said at least you have the guts to do it blogger a blogger, whereas he insults President Bush from far, far away.
You guys keep pretending you’re better than these punks, and perhaps you are, but each time you try to be, you excuse their sickest hypocrisy.
Immediately after the crybaby libtard shrieked you insulted, you should have immediately told him he thus by his own estimation rules acted like a 2 year old sucking a rubber nipple in his critique of Bush.
You people apparently feel some religious or high society or face saving need to be polite when your opposition is literally ripping your face off, doing exactly what they demand you do not, after having done as bad and worse than their lame critique of the person or entity representing your views more closely…
So they will continue, 100% of the time. They of course, would be entirely foolish not to. They get to vent, put down their opponent, and slam their opponent’s supporters, call them names (you’re childish), then they get AN APOLOGY… and their infamous hypocrisy bleeds ever onward, STRENGTHENED by the exchange…validated by the apology… they get more inbred and more confident and likely more outrageous…
This is what is WRONG with the entire republican party (although there are a few heroes who break out of the stupid mold of late).
No I’m not apologizing, I did imply stupid, and you’ll just have to take it like a man, because it’s part of the POINT.
In any case, good luck thinking about what I’ve said. You apologized to the piece of crap. No wonder you people lose elections.

  47. Let’s see how dumb dipsquat is:

“Oliver Willis Like Kryptonite to Stupid”

In other words, the doofus claims by name his blog weakens the stupid…

I’d say that’s a perfect blog name for an idiot liberal fool who spreads the disease, and has no clue he dissed himself in naming it.

I imagine dummy would wail he meant he really attacks the stupid GWB or republican right, but if you’re crushing the stupid, does that really take any brains at all ?

    Conclusion:
Too dumb to name his own blog.
