Breaking: Tsunami Warning In Japan (Update: Damage Mimimal?)

Filed under: General — Aaron Worthing @ 8:06 am

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.  Or by Twitter @AaronWorthing.]

I am mainly seeing this only on Twitter, but there has been a 7.4 magnitude earthquake along with a Tsunami warning.

Now I will note that something like 5 out of 6 of these I have seen have turned out to be nothing.  Which means you should still take it seriously if you are in the zone, but if not, maybe shouldn’t worry too much.

But then if you are the praying type, you might consider doing it…  like now.

And yes Miyagi and Fukushima are in the zone.

Update: Here’s a news report.  It’s pretty sparse.

Update (II): Although the earthquake that spawned this was off the coast, its bad enough that Steve Herman of the Voice of America tweeted: “NISA: Onagawa nuke plant in Miyagi-ken loses 2 of 3 external power grids after M7.4 quake.”

Another problem with the nuke plants? I think Will Smith speaks for all of us:

Update: This post at NPR suggests it all blew over with minimum damage. No wave appeared and there was some Earthquake damage, but it wasn’t too awful. Thank God (literally?).

  1. No this one is real.

  2. Kman,

I have seen real warnings where just for one reason or another, the tsunami didn’t materialize.

That being said, anyone in the zone needs to take this serious. better to overreact and laugh later, than underreact and die.

    Also sparse.

Public broadcaster NHK reported a tsunami warning for Miyagi, saying people in the area should evacuate from the shore to a safe place.

NHK also reported a tsunami advisory for Iwate Prefecture, saying a tsunami is expected to arrive in coastal regions there as well.

Oh, yes. I see what you mean. I thought you were questioning the veracity of the earthquake.

You’re absolutely right. Could be nothing tsunami-wise. But given the location and size…. well, let’s hope for the best.

  5. They’ve issued a warning for a 3.2 foot tsunami.

It doesn’t sound like it will be much of a tsunami, even if it does materialize. The quake itself is the major worry hear.

On a side note, I read some years ago that for every main shock of magnitude N, you would expect 10 aftershocks of magnitude N-1, 100 of magnitude N-2, etc. The main shock in this quake was 9.0. Extrapolate for yourselves.

  6. Footage of the quake (seen on English-language Japan TV — link at MSNBC) from Tokyo is a little disconcerting, in part because it happened at night. You could see an explosion off in the distance, followed by chunks of the city falling into blackout.

yeah, i am not going to try to update every breaking element of this story, but… there are some people saying it was an aftershock that was predicted.

This is the same NPR that the Republican leadership wants to defund as a condition to funding the government?

    Sorry, could not help myself.
