Stewart to Rep. Cohen: “People at Auschwitz Weren’t Upset Because They Were Lied to”

[Guest post by Aaron Worthing; if you have tips, please send them here.]

I have kind of ignored the story of how Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee compared opponents of Obamacare to Nazis, but I figured this was worth passing along.  Jon Stewart sends Cohen up for his hypocrisy:

This is generally consistent with Stewart’s stance generally in favor of civility in discourse and so whether you agree or disagree with him on this point, you can respect his consistency.

But that all being said, while I am not bothered by the picture of that baby, I do find this to be creepy.

Seriously, Jordan, what the frak? I mean, I am not in the habit of making race based assumptions, but I do tend to think that black people don’t usually like Hitler if only because Hitler probably would have started murdering black people, too if the war had gone his way.  (But see this.)  Still, wtf, Michael?

  1. Cohen also compared the Tea Party to the KKK on Anderson Cooper 360, which was pretty civil when Cooper raked him over the coals over his Nazi reference. Cohen demonstrated he knows a lot about Nazis to Cooper in that clip.

  2. Typo in the title: “we’re”

  3. And now to fix the web address, which still retains your past failures. 🙂

  4. ah, i will keep it to remind me that i am human.

  5. Back on topic, I’m really liking JS’s work here. He’s being quite consistent, and even railed over the baseless smearing of Palin.

Looks like I need to start at least watching the opening bit…

  6. Oh, puhlease. The only thing Jon Stewart consistently does is (1) promote Jon Stewart and (2) promote Obama. Jon Stewart’s latest thing is “civility.” “Civility” is in scare quotes because it really involves continuing to dishonestly deride conservatives (like a good Obama fanboy) while occasionally pointing out the most obviously dishonest liberal behaviors (threatening to kill Palin is not helpful to Obama). I just realized; he’s O’Reilly lite in drag. Anyway, we’re only hearing about “civility” now because liberals are on the defensive. And people just lap it up, like, what a fine consistent fellow I believe I’ll go back to watching his show. Don’t. He’s not that funny and it’s not that important that you be liked by people who think he’s funny.

  7. Nice to see Stewart promoting civility by calling conservatives liars, douchbags and assholes without any specifics. Ever notice how when Stewart purports to be dissing a liberal he always finds a way to say something worse about conservatives?

Dood is supposed to be the nation’s go-to expert at pointing out ridiculousness in news media and he just whiffed on the entire Tucson Smear-a-polooza. He actually had a golden opportunity to enhance his claimed truthiness, reality-based and non-partisan chops and he responded by voting ‘present’.

Why? Because he would have had to find something negative to say about conservatives for every instance of liberal clownisness for the week following the shooting, and that would have been way way too obvious.

  8. I think Scott’s right. Jon Stewart is actually bursting some bubbles.

It’s true he has a habit of assuming conservatives are ‘doing it too’, but he’s actually naming names on the left. He’s also perfectly willing to criticize anyone, anywhere. And sometimes he’s pretty funny, though it’s not exactly my cup of tea.

I really respect someone who knows he has a partisan crowd, but is willing to speak against their preconceptions.

  9. Sorry, but Stewart jumped the shark years ago – the first few years after he took over from Kilbourne the show was often hilarous and took shots at everyone and everthing. Then it slowly morphed into just another pretentious facade for bashing conservatives at every opportunity.

As for his call for civility, what kind of asshat invites the formerly – called – Cat Stevens now – Islamic – issuer – of – fatwas up on his stage?

someone who is either a naive fool or a cold hearted liar.

I guess I am leaning towards naive fool. He actually has the ability to persuade lefties, and to some extent, has been covering issues under MSM embargo.

This is more of a prodigal son issue, where the brother is annoyed that this jackass is getting credit, when his long term report card is not very good.

  11. Cohen is just another lefty hack who says indefensible things and tries to rationalize them after the fact. He should have gone the way of Teacups.

    daleyrocks (e7bc4f)

  12. Cohen looks and sounds like he would have been a kapo at Auschwitz

    iconoclast (b10080)

  13. Every single conservative and libertarian currently on TV should challenge him to an hour long debate. He will refuse of course, but in doing so he will be shown up for the hack that he has become. He will no longer have the “I’m just a comedian” defense in his arsenal.
I do think that he is very smart and would do well if he just started reading some books that are not on the upper westside of Manhatten’s reading list.

  14. However, he definitely is saying that Republicans are liars just don’t call them Nazi’s just call them liars. He thinks he is “brilliant” I think he is a tool!

    JadedByPolitics (d652e9)

  15. Stewart perpetuates the argument that the Republicans are lying.

    Davod (bce08f)

  16. I’d guess Black people don’t like Hitler for the same reasons as anyone else…

    Joseph D (cd1722)

  17. Cohen also made news during the 08 campaign buildup when he essentially called Obama Jesus and Palin Pontius Pilate.

You would expect a Jewish person to be a little more sensitive about throwing Nazi references out there.

    whopperman (32d407)

  18. Didn’t Cohen go all Godwinon Pence too?
