ObamaCare Repeal Bill Passed in House, While Obama Fetes a Civil Rights Monster

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 9:10 pm

Obama will never sign it, of course. But I have argued that it’s good politics to get people on the record. Hot Air has the breakdown of today’s vote (just three Democrats voting for repeal) together with an explanation of how Republicans could try to force a Senate vote.

Even without a Senate vote, every Senator will be asked their position. That’s progress right there.

But I’d like a vote.

I’ll end as the Hot Air post does: with this video of Paul Ryan talking about ObamaCare’s fiscal impact. Good stuff.

P.S. What was Obama doing today? As Allahpundit notes, this Twitter message sums it up:

The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner holds a State Dinner for a man who has the 2010 winner under House Arrest.

But hey. Even if the House passed an ObamaCare repeal, we got the pandas for five more years!!! And as a correspondent writes, Joe Biden would surely say that’s a big fucking deal.

  1. Harry Reid says it will never make it through the Senate. Cowboy up Harry, bring it to the floor for a vote. Don’t bury it.

  2. Obama should be thanking the GOP. If they could repeal this disaster, it would save Obama’s presidency as the economy became more stable, and investments made more sense.

Anyhow, you couldn’t find a more stark difference in men from the 2009 to 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winners.

If we want to repeal Obamacare, we need more Republican Senators. It would help if they weren’t RINOs.

  3. Ryan’s great, but it is so weird how they debate.

“I yield to myself for 3 minutes.” um, huh?

I admit to not knowing alot about parliamentary procedure but is there any way we can take the cobwebs off this?

she looked like she’d just come from live bat’leth practice and hadn’t had time to change.

all that being true, i gotta admit she has an eye for tacky that would win the prize at any Walmart or country fair in the country.

  11. The House does not have to force a Senate vote. They have the absolute power to stop Obama Care dead in its tracks.

Obama Care requires annual funding, which must be approved first by the House. It also has the power to reign in Agency regulations.

All the House must do to mortally wound Obama Care is to refuse to fund it. There is absolutely nothing Barack Obama or Harry Reid can do about it, unless they declare Martial Law under the Insane Patriot Act Powers.

Based on Executive Orders he has put into place, along with his dictatorial expansion of that act by his Liberal Nazis cronies. It may very well be his intention to do just that.

  20. well, certain if the first lady is suggesting policy, then it is time to talk about their merits. but when we have health care reform on the dock, when we have our president meeting with a bloodthirsty dictator, talking about the first lady’s choice of evening wear sounds like suddenly shouting, “look! a squirrel!” maybe people aren’t trying to distract us, but it has that effect.

  24. It makes me sick sick sick our first lady would wear red at the State Dinner for China. You can tell it was risky because Andrea Mitchell had to tell us it was gorgeous and a nod to the color of luck. It is, Andrea. But it’s also the color of communism in China. I’d prefer our first lady steer clear.

Oh- the day before the whole family was wearing red to greet Mao. It’s gross.

    MayBee (081489)

  25. And Pangea, people like me will continue to remind voters in 2012 how the GOP’s failure to fund meant that (i) children up to 26 can no longer continue on their parents’ insurance; (ii) children (and adults, starting in 2014) can again be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions; and (iii) there is no effective competition for individual health insurance because the exchanges have not been funded.

We will also tell people that the GOP is not serious about “replacing” ObamaCare because it is apparently waiting until summer to have committees craft reform language.

  28. 26 states are going to court over Obamacare. I can’t help but wonder what the Senate would be doing now if we hadn’t changed to the direct election of Senators.

    Joe Miller (160e2d)

  29. President Hu impressed me with his message. Very open to change compared to previous communist leaders. He is very open to cultural, educational, and scientific exchange and cited many common goals and the building of trust and world peace. Hu stressed the importance of the exchange between young people as the future of our relations. Hu suggested joint military cooperation to increase trust between nations. There were tough questions on human rights, WMD, intellectual property. Obama handled it well, stating our countries are at ‘different stages’ of development. It would have been easy to alienate Hu, but he looked to the common ground, recognizing change doesn’t happen overnight. Obama showed he is a superb and tactful diplomat, particularly since he and Hu have met 8 times in just 2 yrs, more than Bush met the Chinese in 8 years. Obama proved a welcome change to the previous administration whose aggressive and belligerent neocon policy did little to strengthen trust. Bush never had a state dinner for a Chinese leader.

Of course you’re always going to have ignorant assh@les who call Hu a bloodthirsty dictator… neocons fit nicely into the teabagger hate mime… all those who don’t look or pray like us, etc…

    kim (5973d8)

  30. Democrats forced Republicans to take a stand on whether or not members of Congress should receive federal health care benefits. The measure would have made repeal of the health care law contingent on more than half of all members of Congress opting out of the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program.

Republicans vote to deny healthcare to millions while they enjoy their socialized medicine. Nice!

I agree, get ’em on record.

    kim (fa2730)

  31. “their socialized medicine.”

But it’s not socialism if it’s your job benefit. It’s also just silly to demand people give up their pay to proof some point. Not all congressmen are John Kerry wealthy. Some of the best ones are from the middle class and actually do need their compensation. Your rhetoric is meant to empower to elite.

Of course you’re always going to have ignorant assh@les who call Hu a bloodthirsty dictator… neocons fit nicely into the teabagger hate mime

Obviously you’re trolling for a reaction, noting that Reid said he was a dictator yesterday. Further, he is a human rights abuser. You deny it and champion this monster because you’re a troll.

  37. ==nice to see the entire country getting an earful of what he’s all about==

Dmac–I sure hope you’re right. However, as I was flipping through the various network and PBS coverage of the repeal yesterday evening I did not see Ryan’s excellent and learned explanation highlighted. What I saw was the usual “repeal in the House is a symbolic but futile gesture by the uncivil Republicans” along with a review of the new poll that says Obamacare is surging in public support (eye roll). They must at all costs keep Ryan out of the public’s consciousness because he so utterly and completely demolishes their narrative.

Unless people were watching C-span or frequenting certain right leaning sites on the web I seriously doubt they know any thing about Paul Ryan’s powerful and well crafted speech on the floor of the House yesterday about Obamacare.

    elissa (fb8f3b)

  38. Billy reminds me of a 3 toothed democrat from the 1960s. He comes here not to chat, but to spit out a few epithets anonymously. ‘Teabagger’ is basically his baseline. He’s cowardly, and uses the digital white sheets of changing his IP address.

Instead of burning crosses, he’s just tearing up threads and making legal threats. It’s the same attitude in a new era.

He knows he’s a failure, intellectually, hence this behavior. There are quite a lot of liberals who succeed where Billy doesn’t even try. All he has left is making this ‘I offended y’all, hurrr hurrrr’ level of impact.

I’m not arguing for people not to be offended. I know there’s no way to stop some jackass from acting like this. In fact, I hope the Billys really crawl out from under their rocks as they see the statist’s mistakes begin to unravel.

Obama is treating a civil rights monster like a king, while the people’s representatives say they don’t want Obama’s massive healthcare takeover. It’s a nice moment in history for Americans to take a side, and I think Billy Yelverton knows he’s on the wrong side, so he lashes out.

That’s sad. But hopefully people learn to get their news by avoiding the media filter. When their side of the argument is simply to try to hide the argument, I think that’s a very weak long term position.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  40. China hold your ass in its hands. They could make our currency worthless, of course at the expense of their own people, but their new leadership has a demonstrated humanitarian concern. Hu may be China’s Gorbechov but the neocon backward thinkers on the right think the universe revolves around the USA, naturally won’t give Hu a chance and China will always be “the enemy” … “gooks!”. That’s the only way their brain will operate.

    RJ (fa2730)

  41. RJ, what indication do you have that the ‘right wing’ is racist about China? You compare racism from two democrat wars to people who want to balance the budget? Shouldn’t you need some evidence before spitting out that nasty dismissal?

If you don’t have any, maybe racism and bigotry is the only way your brain works.

Racism has nothing to do with it. If a European country put a human rights activist under house arrest, or supported rogue states, I think they’d suffer criticism from the same people.

Hell, you even note that we are in a perilous financial position where China could harm our country. Stop crying racist. Their demonstrated humanitarian concern is to talk about their concern while being human rights monsters. They are communist progressives. You know what that means. China’s government is the continuation of something on par with Hitler, only with a much higher death toll.

Explain North Korea to me, or Tibet, with their ‘demonstrated concern’.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  42. Tibet and N Korea were topics Obama had taken up with Hu.

Regarding hate for the Chinese, just look at the comments above.

WE could learn as much from them as they could from us.

Tibet and N Korea were topics Obama had taken up with Hu.

    What?

Are you going to explain how China’s human rights ‘demonstration’ of interest is compatible with those problems, or just dismiss my points with some crap about Obama paying lip service?

And how can Obama have addressed those problems? You just said it’s racist to criticize China. Is it only racist to do so if you’re conservative?

I disagree that we could learn as much from them as they could from us. The USA isn’t perfect, but we didn’t murder tens of millions of our own people. We don’t go under house arrest or lose our families if we criticize our government.

What they have to learn from us is much more important. China seems to be following our bubble economy mistakes, so I’m not even sure what we have to learn from them. Atheism?

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  45. Time is just a shill for democrats who want to control as much of our lives as possible, so as to skim as much wealth off our lives as possible.

Who cares what they think? Only a psychopath wants the USA to adopt China’s control.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  46. China’s probably lovely for a tiny percentage of the population, but anyone who promotes their system is promoting something that has left most people in abject poverty.

Which is very ‘green’ and liberal.

We heard this all before during the cold war, where hyper-political agencies pretended the USSR was thriving, right up until we were ‘surprised’ at their collapse. We kept hearing ‘they do a lot of things better than us… we have a lot to learn… who are we to tell them not to abuse human rights?’

It’ll work even worse now than it did then. Let’s see the 2010 nobel peace price winner get this royalty treatment at the WH. Let’s see the Dalai Lama get this treatment at the WH.

Until then, I think the real problem is democrats who ignore reality.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  47. Time is just a shill. In Fox News we trust.

    RJ (32d0cf)

  48. Raw Story?

You’re linking Raw Story to bash Fox News?

Your Time article is shilling for the USA to emulate repression. I can point that out. It has nothing to do with your Fox News boogeyman. You’re just dismissing my argument with a diversion.

You also did that when I asked you to justify your crying ‘racist’. Why do you say conservatives criticizing China must be racist? Where’s your evidence? If you can’t show any, you’re the lowest sort of communist defending scum. Let’s see your evidence, instead of your cowardly red herrings.

It’s either ‘according to this expert, X’ or ‘this person is wrong because they are racist/uncivil/stupid’.

I just can’t get a rational argument out of the JTs of the world these days. they are in full panic mode.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

Anyway, China is something to be worried about… I’m not trying to pretend otherwise. But the game of ‘they have it great and we should emulate them’ has been played over and over. They don’t have it great. Their economy is quite unstable, and as the bubble bursts things get pretty hairy, as we know how tyrants act when they need to avoid accountability (with warfare).

I’m glad Obama is interfacing with China. They are important. I wish he would do so as the USA’s advocate, but he’s been bowing to China for years, and they are not bowing back.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  58. dustin

well, i take comfort from the fact that 20 years ago everyone told me the japanese would be taking over the world, and well, look how that turned out.

give the chinese freedom and they probably would take over the world. but that ain’t happening anytime soon. under a repressive state, they will never prosper. they have been trying to pull that trick off for well over 2000 years and it hasn’t worked yet.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  59. Aaron, I would love to see a free China. Because I know that happiness is not a finite thing, I don’t worry that a prosperous and truly free China would be a threat to the USA. We would make eachother richer and happier, through the free market.

The more democracy in the world, the less war. The more the USA sticks up for democracy, the more lives are saved.

The main problem that would persist in China, and the rest of the world, is racial identity. I can’t even begin to explain this simple issue to the left, though. They actually wish for more ID politics, rather than less.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  60. “give the chinese freedom and they probably would take over the world.”

    – A.W.

Anyone who would take over the world would take their freedom, first. A people who won’t even take back their own freedom aren’t going to take over anything anytime soon – except responsibility for a bunch of defaulted U.S. loans at some point in the future.

    Leviticus (ed6d31)

  61. That’s a good point, Leviticus. I don’t see the wisdom in their massive investment in the US’s unsustainable spending.

And it’s not inspiring to see so many people accept such an unfair situation.

Though I want to add, the USA wasn’t able to achieve freedom on her own, either. We needed someone to blockade Yorktown for us. It’s always hard to win freedom, and some Chinese actually are trying. It’s a national disgrace that Obama isn’t honoring his fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner, but rather borrowing huge sums of money to honor the guy who put his family under arrest.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  62. “They actually wish for more ID politics, rather than less.”

    – Dustin

I say this without acrimony: you make a lot of sweeping statements about “the left” under the guise of civility. There is no way to adequately support a statement like that, which is something you guys are always (rightfully) calling people out for in other circumstances.

You are absolutely right. I apologize. There are plenty of leftists who don’t deserve my generalization.

  65. Though I don’t really ask for civility. I don’t even care if they want to jam an ad hom in their argument. I just wish there was an argument, too. I’m referring to a certain kind of pervasive commenter, and it’s unfair to say all leftists are acting this way.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  66. “WE could learn as much from them as they could from us.”

RJ – That’s what Tom Friedman from the NY Times and Jim Hansen from NASA keep saying. They love China’s totalitarian ability to just get things done and avoid having to deal with disagreeable voters and a balky Congress. I see why that is very appealing to the left.

    daleyrocks (e7bc4f)

  67. “Obama showed he is a superb and tactful diplomat”

kim – Obama has been absolutely superb on the international front, demonstrating he is a complete empty suit. He has alienated Great Britain and our allies in Eastern Europe. He chose not to interfere in the internal affairs of Iran, but chose to interfere on the wrong side of the internal affairs of Honduras. He’s royally screwed up the Mideast peace process and negotiated a ridiculous disarmament treaty with Russia.

I could go on, but I’ll stop for now.

    daleyrocks (e7bc4f)

  68. Obama showed he is a superb and tactful diploma

What results possibly justify this? Are we just saying he’s superb because he won the peace prize? Because he’s liberal? Is success just based on trying to appease?

Did we get our missile shield? Has China helped us with the norks? Or Russian with Iran?

    Show me the results.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  69. JD, you are joking in comment 63, correct?

    Jim (87e69d)

  70. “You are absolutely right. I apologize. There are plenty of leftists who don’t deserve my generalization.”

    – Dustin

Apology certainly accepted, by this leftist at least. That’s the “without acrimony” bit, by the way – I didn’t sense any ill-will behind the remark, and seriously doubt there was any. You are a reasonable fellow, Dustin.

“It’s a national disgrace that Obama isn’t honoring his fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner, but rather borrowing huge sums of money to honor the guy who put his family under arrest.”

    – Dustin

It certainly is – and it takes a stunning self-absorption or obliviousness on the part of Obama and his advisers to fail to realize that. I remember joking a few months into Obama’s term – after he refused to meet with the Dalai Lama – that it would be funny to stroll around my college campus and watch as all the heads of all the kids with side-by-side “HOPE 08” and “Free Tibet” bumper-stickers exploded in confusion – this is just another obvious example of that disconnect. But what’s fashionable is not necessarily consistent/coherent, as so many of my dumbass contemporaries are slowly discovering.

JD, it appears a few bridges and caves have upchucked and expelled their usual inhabitants.

    elissa (fb8f3b)

  77. No, Dmac and Texan, you’re missing my point. Does JD think almost everyone on this site is Yelverton? And who is that guy and why does JD say things about him every day? Is JD Dustin Hoffman in Rainman when it comes to Yelverton?

    Jim (8de501)

  78. I am Rainman. It is truly just a coincidence that Jim and Kim show up spewing the same drivel, in similar formats, and spamming similar links to what prior people have done.

    JD (d4bbf1)

  79. Does JD think almost everyone on this site is Yelverton?

Sadly, there are times that almost everyone on this site actually is either that freaking nutcase or Glenn Greenwald.

And far from being a savant of identification, JD’s often just playing Master of the Obvious. Yelverton’s barely even trying. No offense, JD. Keep on mocking the guy.

I appreciate the patience, Leviticus. You’re also quite reasonable, and I’m glad you helped me clarify. I really enjoy arguing with liberals, and don’t at all enjoy dealing with the absence of arguments that constitutes a lot of debate these days.

I wonder how Mccain would have fared if he were hosting China’s leader. He impressed me with Georgia, but China is a problem that can’t be solved until the USA is on her own two feet. It’s just a fact that the GOP has been part of the problem.

How much easier politics would be if that weren’t true! So many issues revolve around our spending more than we have.
