International Scandal Revealed: Bristol Palin Fixes Strand of Sarah Palin’s Hair

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:00 am

The AP seemingly catches Sarah Palin being overly concerned with appearances when she is supposed to be worried about cholera victims:

In case you can’t read the caption, it says: “Dieu Nalio Chery / AP Photo. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, center, has her hair done during a visit to a cholera treatment center set up by the NGO Samaritan’s Purse in Cabaret, Haiti, Saturday Dec. 11, 2010. Palin arrived Saturday in Haiti as part of a brief humanitarian mission in an impoverished nation struggling to overcome post-election violence and a cholera epidemic. At right, Palin’s husband, Todd Palin.”

And at left, the hairdresser.

The picture was designed to make liberals choleric, and it worked.

The Daily Mail’s story was titled Ready for her close-up… Sarah Palin lands in Haiti (well, she wants to look just right for those poor cholera-stricken residents).

But my favorite reaction is from the Huffington Post’s Michael Shaw, in a post titled Reading the Pictures: Palin Does Haiti Cholera: How’s My Hair? (and, Did AP Lend a Curl?). What is interesting is that Shaw sensed the media bias — but decided that it meant that the Palins had really behaved badly towards the media:

If I find the fantastically clever Sarah Palin to be one of the shallowest and blatantly self-serving politicians, err, political celebrities I’ve ever seen, it doesn’t stop me from taking pause upon seeing these AP shots from Franklin Graham’s cholera treatment center in Haiti.

Damn right it’s revolting seeing Sarah getting her hair made up like this field hospital is her movie set . . .

And then, the multiple shots of Sarah sanitizing and washing her hands suggests the former Gov is primarily concerned, above all humanitarian else, about catching something.

There are two questions I can’t quite answer, however. 1.) Compassion notwithstanding, could these exact same images have been created if it was Biden, Bill Clinton, Hillary or Nancy Pelosi moving around this camp with media in tow over the same afternoon? 2.) How much was it the Palin team’s behavior, attitude or reputation that so encouraged these AP photographers (one or both local?) along with AP photo editors to suddenly drop the typical, everyday play-along (since we all get the difference between this vs. this) and deliver these scathing photo op-defying pictures of “the Sarah show?”

You have to love the mind-bending pretzel logic. If the media was unfair to Sarah Palin, it must show that Sarah Palin was being a big huge jerk to the media.

Because, why else would the media be unfair to Sarah Palin??

Here’s the problem. The sleuths at Free Republic figured out, based on clothing, that the “hairdresser” was Sarah’s daughter Bristol (h/t Eric Blair):

There she is, second from the right. That’s right: Bristol Palin was the hairdresser, simply fixing an out of place strand of hair on her mom’s head.

Which, of course, the photographer would have known. But deliberately chose not to reveal.

What media bias?

  1. Frequent hand washing and sanitizing in the midst of a cholera outbreak is a bad thing now?

And then, the multiple shots of Sarah sanitizing and washing her hands suggests the former Gov is primarily concerned, above all humanitarian else, about catching something.

    Good Lord.

I sanitize my hands at clinics too. It doesn’t say what I am primarily concerned with. I took my wife to the doctor last week and used quite a bit of sanitizer the entire time, but it didn’t mean my primary concern wasn’t my wife. It’s unbelievable to say something like this. Hell, Palin was also protecting everyone else around her. Everyone should keep their hands clean, especially people who shake a lot of hands and are around the ill.

And politicians, women in particular, need to look good on camera because every single shot of them is a potential bomb. If they have one ugly picture, one ugly expression, it becomes the cover of Newsweek. Especially for Palin.

I can’t imagine how annoying that must be. I wouldn’t last a week. And now Palin is being blasted as some kind of ultimate vapid horrible person because her daughter cared about her appearance?

Sarah Palin is actually out there talking about policy, and these sexist bigots refuse to address it. Their plan couldn’t be more obvious, and I guarantee this is coordinated, a la Journolist. They will blast Sarah Palin for things that are irrelevant to her arguments, while ignoring her arguments, hoping to deny her any serious exposure.

That is cowardly. If she’s really so bad, you should be able to debate her actual points, instead of ignore them like a weirdo third grader.

The jackasses make it hard not to support Palin. Her ideas are sound and they are being denied attention by people who know they are sound.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  4. Well we know how Newsweek went so far as to do an extreme closeup during the ’08 campaign, but that
had limited effect, she doesn’t take a bad picture, btw, where is Obama on Haiti, still at the Christmas party?

    narciso (6075d0)

  5. I have received a lot of positive feedback about Aaron. And he is helping me through a difficult time when I am more busy than normal at work.

As to DRJ, I don’t expect her back any time soon. But one can always hope …

    Patterico (1c55fb)

  6. The guy is called it ‘revolting’.

I’m trying to think of the things in life that I would call revolting. That Obama made sure his tie and jacket looked good wouldn’t be on the list.

Palin can’t get credit for a humanitarian mission. Why is that? She actually didn’t look particularly gussied up. I see a normal person with a basic attention to their hair.

A lot of us recall when Palin did the makeup for the old war-vet. If this guy thinks he has proof Palin is being selfish here, then he’s got proof she was selfless then. In reality, they know Palin was doing a good thing and this really do find it revolting. And that degree of hatred is probably on my list of ‘revolting’ things.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  7. I am not so sure that I would be so quick to blame the photographer for the caption below the photo. Someone like Brad Fikes would know how photos are actually handled but I would be surprised if the photographer had any input other than “Here is a photo of Sara Palin & Todd Palin, etc”. The reason I say this is that headlines to various stories are not written by the author of the stories but by various editors responsible for the section that the story is running in–which we all know leads to some rather misleading headlines.

The photographer very well may have identified the daughter as well. My guess is that the caption was written by the photo editor who would have the final say as to how the photo was interpreted.

    BT (74cbec)

  8. Might have been nice if those United Nations troops had used their hand sanitizer a bit – and a few other health precautions as well. Might have saved thousands of lives.

But of course, if Palin washes her hands it could only be herself that she’s concerned about because she’s a conservative, right?

    Gesundheit (aab7c6)

  9. And let me be another vote in the affirmative for Aaron. Good guy.

    BT (74cbec)

  10. Question for Patterico: When will DRJ be coming back? This Aaron Worthing guy is getting on my nerves.

    Comment by JusWunderin —

Do you not have an email account? This is a rude thing to post as a comment. Aaron’s putting in a lot of work, and it’s not like you paid him for any of it.

I’m a big fan of DRJ, too, but as I emailed Patterico a while back, I think Aaron’s done quite well. In particular, he has an eye for stories people want to discuss.

I miss Patterico’s blogging, too, but I’ll take what I’m getting. If your problem is that he’s discussing Sarah Palin, you better get used to it. That’s going to be the reality everywhere for a while.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  11. Last time I was in Haiti was in 2000. I don’t have any hair to keep out of my face, but you sure do have to work at keeping the sweat out of your eyes, and the dust, and the sun. So if she wears dark shades, is she just trying to look cool?

    Gesundheit (aab7c6)

  12. No, Aaron does a great job, Of course, when Sean Penn shows up there, when he’s not flacking the Wilson’s pr, well it’s an all out press junket,
Larry king, RS,and the like. Maybe the Humble Oil
heiress by proxy, should fly her lear down there

    narciso (6075d0)

  13. For me the really bad part of that was this:

And then, the multiple shots of Sarah sanitizing and washing her hands suggests the former Gov is primarily concerned, above all humanitarian else, about catching something.

This is an out-and-out ignorant statement. Washing her hands was both self-interested and humanitarian. In fact, she was almost certainly doing what she was told. First, she is allowed to not to want to get sick, especially given she has a toddler at home. Second, if she doesn’t wash her hands, she can spread infections to others, including secondary opportunistic infections. Literally not washing her hands can cause people to die.

So that part is just deluded and ignorant, which is par for the course with PDS.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  14. Aaron, I enjoy your perspective and writing. As for ‘justwonderin’ not so much. Is it too much to ask of “JW” to stay on point and not engage in ad hominem attacks against a point of view? Sadly, I guess so.

    vet66 (9d1bb3)

  15. btw, thanks for several kind comments.

Which is not to say I don’t miss Patterico’s viewpoint, too.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  16. . First, she is allowed to not to want to get sick, especially given she has a toddler at home.

I can only imagine if news came out that he son was sick, near the time Sarah visited the ill.

In fact, I’ll take it a step further and suggest this Michael Shaw nobody would be condemning her if the facts were opposite.

‘Why, Palin shows she doesn’t think Haitians are as important when she doesn’t bother to run a comb through her hair! She also has a cavalier attitude about hygiene, risking patients and her own son as there are no reports she cleaned her hands!’

When they bash you for washing your freaking hands, they just hate you no matter what you do.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  17. she’s in Haiti cause of she is a great humanitarian always thinking of others

she will be remembered as mother teresa of the tundra and the Haiti peoples will never forget her kindness

    happyfeet (c0d821)

  18. The best part is the HuffPo essayist, who points out that it is Bristol Palin, and *still* tries to blame Palin for the actions of the press. He is as obsessed as some posters I have seen here.

But yes, the media has no bias. After all, they told us so, and they never distort or lie.

    Eric Blair (86b7bc)

  19. And right on schedule. As predictable as Professor Yelverton.

    Eric Blair (86b7bc)

  20. The unspoken assumption among the most extreme of the PDS crowd, considering she has been hung in effigy in W. Hollywood, her church was burned down

    narciso (6075d0)

  21. she’s in Haiti cause of she is a great humanitarian always thinking of others

she will be remembered as mother teresa of the tundra and the Haiti peoples will never forget her kindness

Well, no. She is a politician, and this was an appearance. However it was an appearance that did actual good raising awareness, etc.

    That’s how it works.

She was called “one of the shallowest and blatantly self-serving politicians, err, political celebrities I’ve ever seen” by this Shaw nutcase, and that’s not even justified by anything. He said that even for that demon monster, it’s revolting that she had nice hair and used hand sanitizer.

That’s proof the attack is unfair.

Would it be fair to note that a lot of politicians visit places like Haiti partly because they think it helps their careers? Of course not. But the special way Palin is treated is the story, not that she’s acting like a politician again.

That’s the tragic aspect of Palin. These people are creating her. They are creating an entirely separate issue, too, of fighting back against their incredibly unfair journalism by supporting Palin. It’s an awful way to select who you support for high office, but the issue is real and if Palin were elected again, that would be a major victory.

She’s got policy views. She had a major op ed published a few days ago. They think they are shutting her down by ignoring that and bashing her hand washing, but all they are doing is creating this additional issue that isn’t good for our country.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  22. the only question is how many adopted Haiti babies are they gonna bring home

How many do you guess Mr. Blair?

I bet eight cause with the one she already has that’ll be 9 and Kate G can suck it

    happyfeet (c0d821)

  23. The sleuths at Free Republic figured out, based on clothing, that the “hairdresser” was Sarah’s daughter Bristol

You don’t have to put the word “hairdresser” in quotes, since you are the only one who referred to that person as a “hairdresser” (AP didn’t; HuffPo didn’t)

    Kman (d30fc3)

  24. Would it be fair to note that a lot of politicians visit places like Haiti partly because they think it helps their careers? Of course not.

Obviously I meant of course, yes, it’s fair.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  25. Signaling unusual usage

Quotation marks are also used to indicate that the writer realizes that a word is not being used in its current commonly accepted sense.

Crystals somehow “know” which shape to grow into.

In addition to conveying a neutral attitude and to call attention to a neologism, or slang, or special terminology (also known as jargon), quoting can also indicate words or phrases that are descriptive but unusual, colloquial, folksy, startling, humorous, metaphoric, or contain a pun:

Dawkins’s concept of a meme could be described as an “evolving idea.”

People also use quotation marks in this way to:

    * distance the writer from the terminology in question so as not to be associated with it.

I ask people to remember that Kman has refused several times to even read what he’s replying to, and several of us have agreed he should be ignored.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  26. Doesn’t it seem like just yesterday that Anderson Cooper and some other liberal media types were in a tight tee-shirt, beefcake contest nightly as they “reported” from Haiti? It seemed like viewers were being treated to gay soft-porn for a while when trying to learn about the aftermath of the earthquake. Nothing like maintaining the metro-sexual glow while reporting on mass casualties from an earthquake.

    in_awe (44fed5)

  27. What do you expect from the MFM when all of their breathless reportage from Katrina were flat – out lies, beginning with reports of looters shooting at rescue helicopters, piles of dead bodies outside of the Superdome, etc. As the awesome Maj. Honeree exasperatingly said after one too many assinine questions, “YOU ARE STUCK ON STUPID!” Palin seems to bring out similar thoughts among her alleged betters.

    Dmac (498ece)

  28. Cholera
    By Mayo Clinic staff

The most common sources of cholera infection include:

    1) Surface or well water. Cholera bacteria can lie dormant in water for long periods, and contaminated public wells are frequent sources of large-scale cholera outbreaks. Cholera epidemics are most likely to occur in communities without adequate sanitation and in areas affected by natural disasters or war. People living in crowded refugee camps are especially at risk of cholera.

    […]

    Prevention

If you’re traveling to cholera-endemic areas, your risk of contracting the disease is extremely low if you follow these precautions:

    1) Wash your hands. Frequent hand washing is the best way to control cholera infection. Wash your hands thoroughly with hot, soapy water, especially before eating or preparing food, after using the toilet, and when you return from public places. Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer for times when water isn’t available.

If only Sarah Palin didn’t listen to that fringe, lunatic Mayo Clinic, she’d be a better person. Good Lord, these moonbat media folks need to be institutionalized. Have they ever been to the doctor? Notice how s/he washes his hands or wears gloves? And that’s in the “sterile” confines of a U.S. clinic.

In conclusion, “Run, Sarah, Run!” We need to find out who all the crazy people are so that we may quarantine them… for the children, naturally.

  29. I also notice that the photographer carefully published a photo that had Bristol’s arm blocking her face. A slightly better angle would have shown her face and allowed the viewer to identify her.

  30. Ah Sean Penn along with, Doug Brinkley and Matt Taibbi, on the dinghy, in N. Orleans, like the

    narciso (6075d0)

  31. Dustin, I don’t care to battle with Mr. Feet on this subject, since he is clearly mental on the topic, but I well remember him being all out of sorts at how some people said rude things about a public figure he liked and thought was being treated unfairly.

A person, by the way, who bilked the government out of millions of dollars. That’s right: Shirley Sherrod. Pigford, anyone?

    Ironic, yes?

So it is all about who he likes and doesn’t. And that’s fine, and not unique to Mr. Feet’s theatre. Shallow and silly and hypocritical, but fine. And it has *nothing* to with Palin’s political aspirations; it is quite clearly personal. Just like our HuffPo friends, and the people trying to call her “stupid” for liking C.S. Lewis, and so on.

No, the real issue isn’t people who are reflexively hateful wielding a flexible yardstick of fairness. It’s the press creating a narrative, and pushing it until it becomes a form of the truth.

And there is little we can do about that, other than point out the hypocrisy when we see it.

And also there is a severe risk of secondary oppotunistic infections going from patient to patient if she doesn’t wash her hands. in other words stuff that couldn’t beat your immune system by itself, but in a weakened state can cause problems.

  33. And I would like to chime in, Mr. Worthing, that I appreciate your posts very much.

    Eric Blair (6037ec)

  34. Hold it everybody. Obviously, the mainstream media knows best about hygiene at field hospital sites. That’s right. There’s no longer a need to sanitize bare skin in those situations. Geez, your all so out of it…

    John (65b8db)

  35. I wonder what Mr. Shaw would say about all those doctors in that treatment center sanitizing over and over and over? They must be prepping for their glamour shots…or something.

But nobody which AW is criticizing used the “terminology in question”.

If AW wants to criticize the media of bias, why does he have to plant certain words and attribute them to the media in order to make that point? Can’t his argument stand on his own without making stuff up? And isn’t that bias?

“Michael Shaw is a Clinical Psychologist, an analyst of visual journalism, and a frequent lecturer and writer on how politicians and the media frame political imagery. Michael’s clinical training — which is woven into his commentary — involves the analysis of character and character styles. His research has dealt with the creative process, visual thinking, and how metaphors can create psychological insight…”

So this social “scientist” (and I think scare quotes are appropriate here considering the evidence) is “an analyst of visual journalism” yet couldn’t adequately evaluate a media image, the very palette of visual manipulation. He was so quick to make an editorial comment that he didn’t stop to gather facts other than the most superficial.

You NEVER read anything you condemn. You’ve repeatedly criticized someone for something they didn’t do, on grounds that are absurd.

Patterico didn’t make anything up. Bristol Palin helping with her mom’s hair is not ‘Sarah getting her hair done’.

The photographer, who — unless he is totally incompetent — would have known that it was Bristol fixing her mom’s hair, was obliged to identify every subject he could for his editor. My guess is that he did so. The responsibility then falls to the editor, in conjunction with the caption writer, to present a clear and balanced description of the scene depicted in the photo. They identified Todd; why not Bristol? Answer: because they saw an opportunity to plant the barb of bias into a completely innocuous pic.

AP, of course, as you can see for yourself above: They reported she “had her hair done” when they captioned that photo. That, always, means a hairdresser. No one ever says that about your child fussing with your hair, especially one whose name is also a household word. They say, “Bristol Palin fixes Sarah Palin’s hair on a trip to Haiti, etc.”

That their wording is clearly disingenuous is proved by all the pieces coming out in other media based on this picture and its caption.

  54. Kman, you owe everyone in the thread an apology, not just Aaron, whom you repeatedly lied about, by your own standards.

This is the umpteenth time you missed something really obvious, and only because you didn’t read, which you often exclaim with pride.

Your argument about the term ‘hairdresser’ is a failure. Patterico didn’t make it up. You can quote concepts to signify that you do not agree with them. Quotation marks have multiple uses, and as Patterico did not associate that quote with any particular person, it is basic grammar that it’s not a misquote.

You don’t get to make up your own rules for usage, and these are the lamest grounds imaginable. It is a blatant deception to have an arm block a daughter’s face, and then have several major articles about Sarah Palin having her hair done for a photo op. You’re being obtuse, you know it, and it’s because you are a creep.

You have embarrassed yourself enough times. Move on to the next chapter of your life, and stop fawning over Aaron or lying or freaking out about things you don’t even read.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  55. They identified Todd; why not Bristol? Answer: because they saw an opportunity to plant the barb of bias into a completely innocuous pic.

If they had identified Bristol as the one doing Sarah’s hair, it wouldn’t have been biased? How so? What difference does that make?

I think this is a lot of faux outrage. Yes, I agree that the caption could have been more thorough, but the fact that it isn’t doesn’t scream “media bias” to me.

Quotation marks have multiple uses, and as Patterico did not associate that quote with any particular person, it is basic grammar that it’s not a misquote.

Wrong, Dustin. He was trying to illustrate the point that the media was biased against Palin because the media was trying to show her as superficial and only caring about cosmetic appearances.

And that’s a perfectly valid point. But he undercuts it by hyping evidence not in existence. No media outlet ever referred to Palin as having a “hairdresser”. So it’s not a huge revelation that the mystery “hairdresser” was merely Bristol.

    Tempest in a teapot.

    Kman (d30fc3)

  62. C’mon, Dustin: this guy is like Yelverton. He is so darned smart and witty!

But his posts kind of suggest otherwise. It does waste time, true, but it is nice to see the Left acquit itself so very competently here, as well in the White House.

    It’s that whole self-confidence thing, I suspect.

Threadjackers aside, I will say I kind of admire the creativity of using this innocuous photo with an arm in way of Bristol’s face, to make political hay of. Doesn’t make up for the dishonesty, but if only they’d use all that energy trying to find ways to reduce their runaway spending plans….

  68. Actually, JD, your wife might appreciate that approach: getting one’s hair done does NOT equal going to an expensive hairdresser.

She can call it the Troll Defense Act of 2010.

On the other hand, you could offer to do her hair for her. Because it’s the same thing.

I’m not going to lie… I found that impressive. It’s impressively devious, anyway.

They take a story about Palin visiting the ill, seeing an foreign disaster, being with her family, washing her freaking hands, and actually spin every aspect of that negatively.

they probably spent hours sorting through all the photos they had, brainstorming lie after lie, before seeing that this one of Bristol, Todd and Sarah, looked like a hairdresser because of the arm blocking the well known face. So they made her out to be a hairdresser instead of a daughter.

It’s pathetic, but also shows tremendous effort.

It doesn’t really help Palin much, but it reinforces the notion that extremely dishonest people have a special fear of Sarah Palin.

Apparently she’s not bad at it. Palin looked sharp to me, considering the place she was and the way everyone looked around her.

I don’t blame her one bit. Any even slightly bad photo is going to be used. A normal person would be unable to remain sane if they had to stay polished like that.

Of course, a normal person is unable to win elections in this country, anymore, which is why I accept that Palin is the way she is.

Bristol’s been impressive, hasn’t she? Aside from the trainwreck surround Levi, and the consequences, she’s been sharp, hard working, relatively polished, and a good daughter.

I’ll be honest, I’d be proud of her. I was groaning like a haunted staircase about this girl, but I think her DWTS move actually worked on me.

I think it’s great that Palin supports her favorite Alaskan things. There’s nothing to be ashamed of in American exceptionalism, and it’s a great thing for other countries to work towards, as many of the poor nations in the 1980s have.

    DRJ (d43dcd)

  95. As a woman about the same age as Palin, with hair a little longer, I can tell you that the phrase “getting her hair done” is biased and inaccurate. Most hair clips slide over the course of the day and need to be repositioned to keep them from falling out. Getting your hair done is a multi hour process in a salon. If the editors don’t know the difference, they are probably bald. Otherwise, they are deliberately attempting to paint Palin as a vain woman, which she is not.

No apologies necessary, good friend. I am not even going to acknowledge who we are going to ignore, so thsnks for doing it.

I know by personal experience that BT and Icy Texan is correct. Blame the editor.

I just wish the worst thing that could be said about me was that my daughter took a moment to “fix” something in my hair.

    MD in Philly (cac12c)

  115. I have to disagree with you guys here. I don’t think there was any intentional dishonesty; I certainly don’t think the AP editor went through dozens of images to pick the one s/he could plausibly misrepresent. Rather, I think this is Palin’s “plastic turkey” moment.

If you cast your minds back to Bush’s “plastic turkey” episode, there was no deliberate lying by the media. Rather it was a game of broken telephone in which a chain of journalists each relayed in his/her own words what s/he thought the previous one had written, and of course each read the previous one’s words through BDS-infused lenses, interpreting them in the way least charitable to Bush, resulting at the end of the line in a nasty fabrication that ended up exploding in the LSM’s collective faces.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  116. Millhouse, you’re either being very generous OR very naive.

    Icy Texan (e6275d)

  117. Milhouse, how do you explain the existence of several pictures from this scene that do identify Bristol Palin?

It’s very unlikely they didn’t know who that girl was. It’s a major difference between a daughter adjusting your hair vs a professional artist.

There’s too much history of this kind of misrepresentation. The vast majority of these ‘no deliberate lying’ episodes are biased to the left. That’s evidence of intent.

At the end of the line, you’re right, it culminates in a large and nasty fabrication that should simply embarrass the journalists.

Perhaps I’m just being unfair, but it’s very suspicious to me that a famous person like Bristol is not identified, and the picture is covering her face, and she’s being used as proof Palin was too worried about her staff doing her hair.

The larger point is that it doesn’t really matter if she wanted to have nice looking hair, but I think AP’s editors knew this was Bristol and wanted to craft a different story.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  118. And if the AP wants me to trust them, they have to work hard to avoid making so many errors like this.

It is a blatant error that they used this picture, even if it was innocent. They need to dig in and get their facts right, every time, if they wish to recover reputation. Until then, when I see almost every story they put out getting a fact wrong in a way that helps the left’s narrative, I am naturally going to assume they meant to do that.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  119. The problem lies with the premise, which was based
on memes from the campaign, yes she hired her own
hairdresser during the campaign, for a special event, but one sees that appearances are not her
major concern. The ‘plastic turkey’ meme, made no sense, yet it was carried forth, by an early version
    of the journolist.

    narciso (6075d0)

  120. Yep, the plastic turkey story was actually pretty horrible. Undermining the US President because he tried to rally the troops on a holiday? Based on a lie?

I won’t accept this was a mere mistake. They are supposed to get their facts right, and if they do not, ‘oops’ only cuts it under strange circumstances. This was running with the ball because of BDS.

I’d rank that story as 1000 times worse than the Palin one. Bush really wasn’t this creep who would present a fake turkey for the photos. He meant to go there and rally the troops.

Palin, on the other hand, really was interested in having presentable hair, and it’s not a big deal if she had a hairdresser, though she didn’t in this case. It still exposes the same set of lefty douches, but their attack is pointless.

The only difference between Palin and other women in politics is that Palin wasn’t used to having hairdressers and a huge wardrobe. She is only recently wealthy.

Oh, that and the fact she’s a republican.

Do you think the AP made a big deal out of this?

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  121. Stepping back a moment, if someone was really obsessed with how they looked would they be getting touch-ups in public?

Pardon me, but doesn’t it seem ridiculous to try to make an issue of this, even if the person was a professional aide to Palin?

I don’t think a sane and objective person would see this, no matter how it is spun, as negative of Palin; there is no “there” there.

As I said before, if the worst thing the press could say about me is showing a picture of my daughter fixing something in my hair I would be your next president. People really have to be afflicted with severe PDS to see this as reflecting negatively on Palin.

    MD in Philly (cac12c)

  122. Exactly, MD.

It’s interesting how they framed the story, but even after they have, it’s just sheer ugliness to bash someone because of their hand washing or having their hair presentable.

It’s a complete non-story, and AP knew it. That’s probably why they had to cherry pick a photo that changed it from Bristol playing with her mom’s hair to this elite with a hairdresser in Haiti. It’s still pathetic, but they probably felt the need to reach a little more.

As I’ve said a few times, Palin can be discussed intelligently, by the left. she’s making comments on policy that they could easily argue against. The coordinated campaign appears to be to deny her any intelligent coverage, but still talk about her constantly. I think that’s a very poor plan for the left.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  123. The coordinated campaign appears to be to deny her any intelligent coverage, but still talk about her constantly

Good point, Dustin. Just make the average person tired of hearing her name devoid of content.

    MD in Philly (cac12c)

  124. #118, I don’t think the person who added that caption knew who the “hairdresser” was. I don’t think s/he carefully studied each photo and memorised who each person was. I think whoever it was saw this photo and thought it good enough to publish; s/he then looked at it to write the caption, recognised Sarah and Todd Palin, and didn’t recognise the “hairdresser”, because s/he didn’t even look at her closely enough to identify her, because s/he already “knew” that it wasn’t anyone famous or important in her own right. It never occurred to this person that it might be Bristol, because why would Bristol be fixing her mother’s hair when that’s the hairdresser’s job! See what I mean?

There’s too much history of this kind of misrepresentation. The vast majority of these ‘no deliberate lying’ episodes are biased to the left. That’s evidence of intent.

No, that’s precisely wrong. The fact that the mistakes always run the same way is evidence of a deep-seated bias, which prevents them from seeing things as they are. They really think Palin and Bush are empty-headed vain near-illiterate religious fanatics who travel with a crew of make-up artists, hair stylists, wardrobe managers, etc. and plastic props for whatever occasion might present itself. And so they look at everything they do through that lens, and see them doing whatever it is they think such a person would do. There’s no intent to misrepresent; on the contrary, they go to great lengths to present their subjects as (they think) they truly are!

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  125. THey had the pictures, the ‘hairdresser’ was wearing the same scarf as Bristol, there was no other aide so attired, same as with the ‘plastic
turkey’ pieces of which were being served up in the other pics, Just like the edited transcripts of her
    interviews presented as representative.

    narciso (6075d0)

  126. #126, The turkey that Bush took the picture with wasn’t plastic, but pieces of it were not served in the other pictures taken that day. It was a centerpiece for decorative purposes only. I don’t know whether it just got thrown out, or whether parts of it were salvageable and ended up in the next day’s meals, but for that day at least it may as well have been plastic. The way the story grew was not through anyone making anything up, but through a series of relayed messages, with information loss (or rather gain) at each transmission, just like a game of broken telephone. One reporter correctly noted that the turkey in the photo was a display turkey; the next one, reading that report, assumed that it must have been made of plastic; the next one assumed that if it was plastic then it must have been brought there for the purpose of the photo shoot; and the next one took that as gospel, and in addition misread the timestamp on the original report; a few more steps added the other fabrications into the mix, and we ended up with a story that was false from beginning to end, and painted a very nasty picture of the president, without anyone along the chain being deliberately dishonest. They just all hated him, and believed the worst of him, and therefore automatically read any story about him with an eye to what the bad president who lived in their heads would do.

And I think much the same thing happened here. The person who captioned this photo didn’t notice that Bristol in the other photos is wearing the same clothes as the “hairdresser” in this one. Because why would you pay attention to what a hairdresser is wearing? And why would Bristol step in to do the hairdresser’s job for her? That would be the hairdresser who must have been there because a woman as vain as Palin couldn’t possibly travel without one! You see how this goes.

If you follow the same chain of logic you will also understand that Bush must have used his Daddy’s political pull to get into the TANG, because how could a dumb person like him get in without it? And therefore attempts to explain that his Daddy didn’t have any pull to speak of in those days fall flat, because if he didn’t have any pull then how could his son have got in? It’s all logical, you see. And for my next trick I’ll prove that Todd Palin can’t possibly be Yup’ik, because the racist Sarah would never have married one.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  127. It was a centerpiece for decorative purposes only. I don’t know whether it just got thrown out, or whether parts of it were salvageable and ended up in the next day’s meals, but for that day at least it may as well have been plastic

No, it was food. I’m not sure what your source is, but the whole thing was food. I’ve been to several Army thanksgivings, and making those displays is a wonderful tradition, and it’s the real thing.

Sure, there’s some decorativeness to it, just as there is on my family’s table.

and you’re wrong to say this chain doesn’t show deliberate dishonesty. I honestly have no idea why you insist you’ve demonstrated that, without evidence. They should have done their research. It’s their freaking job, and we’re talking about a president in wartime.

The distortions continue to this day, so I am well established that they had plenty of time to get their facts straight.

. The person who captioned this photo didn’t notice that Bristol in the other photos is wearing the same clothes as the “hairdresser” in this one.

If so, again, that’s extremely poor journalism. It’s logically possible, but also it’s incredibly unlikely. I suspect hundreds of pictures were submitted, and many of them show who that woman is. I suspect many with Sarah, Todd, and bristol, right there. I suspect her face was visible even as she helped her mother’s hair.

    Why? Just common sense guesswork.

I get your general point: these people have incredibly unfair biases they bring to the table, so they don’t do their homework, and instead make ugly assumptions about conservatives.

After year after year of extremely unfair coverage, I’m calling this stacked deck ‘deliberate’. Don’t believe that’s proven? Read some of the J-list leaked emails.

These people actually do deviously plan out distortions and lies. So knowing that ducks are out there, when I see a quacking thing that looks like a duck, that’s my assumption as to what it is.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  128. I try not to follow stupidity, like that, I let Tim Blair, handle it, their assumption was wrong, so was the story that proceeded from it. The whole thing leaves me feeling like Lewis Black, from the right

    narciso (6075d0)

  129. Frankly, I’m not prepared to accept any explanation about this Bristol error (and yes, it was an error) or the plastic turkey error (which was huge and awful).

It was far, far beyond acceptable. I could creatively construct an innocent explanation, but they should proactively ensure they don’t lie about Republicans, just because they hate them so darn much. Maybe if they did so, they would wind up not hating them so much as the truth emerged.

But instead, we get worse lies, and less fair coverage, and more excuses about Journ-o-list style slander.

I can’t prove that the errors are all deliberate, but in this case, the careful way they characterize things and frame things makes it a very safe bet. What are the odds that Bristol’s face would be covered? The photographer knew who that was… wouldn’t most of his shots show the famous person’s face? She’s been front page news a mere few days ago, after all.

But if we see her face, the AP’s narrative is completely broken. What a convenient mistake they made!

And they make it over and over again.

It’s proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  130. Kmart – go ask 5 women what getting their hair done is.

he’d be arrested as a creepy sex stalker before he got to the fifth one….

i doubt he has *any* social interaction with women beyond ordering super-size combo meals at McAwful’s

    redc1c4 (fb8750)

  131. Dustin, I was following Tim Blair’s blog closely at the time of the incident, and it was made pretty clear that the centerpiece turkeys were not eaten, at least that day. The turkey that was actually served to the soldiers was already carved and being kept warm in steam trays; the centerpieces were overcooked to look pretty, and were sitting out in the open, and it would probably be against regs to serve them. Functionally, they may as well have been plastic. Which is why some idiot journalist who was not there, but who read a report referring to the turkey as a display piece, assumed that it was plastic, and reported as such, which led to a whole cascade of other errors.

I’m not saying journos never lie; I’m saying that they don’t always lie, but even when they’re trying to tell the truth their deep-seated bias makes them assume all sorts of wrong things.

    Milhouse (ea66e3)

  132. The turkey that was actually served to the soldiers was already carved and being kept warm in steam trays; the centerpieces were overcooked to look pretty, and were sitting out in the open, and it would probably be against regs to serve them. Functionally, they may as well have been plastic.

I’m not seeing the scandal in any of this. Sure, functionally, decorations on your plate at home might as well be depleted uranium.

But they aren’t. Someone prepared a beautiful turkey to help soldiers experience as good of a thanksgiving as possible, and journalists lied about it because they had Bush Derangement Syndrome.

It wasn’t plastic. It matters. Maybe it doesn’t matter to you, personally, but it matters to me that this kind of fact be verified. The excuse you’re offering is not acceptable. It wouldn’t be for a third grader’s homework, and it isn’t for the NYT, AP, etc. If they get a major fact wrong, and consistently do so in a way that demonizes Republicans, and it’s proven they coordinated many stories that way, I lose faith in them completely.

BTW, I’m calling BS on your claim the turkeys on display are never eaten. Prove it. How does Tim Blair know if the turkey wasn’t eaten? Did he follow it around all day? Show me a link.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  133. I say that because I had KP duty once, when I was a private in Korea, and I tore a drumstick off a turkey and ate it, and no one cared.

I think the ‘facts’ about how this turkey was plastic… oh wait, not plastic, but maybe no one ate it, so it’s OK that we called it plastic… those facts are just myths because Bush did an awesome thing and people wanted to ruin it. It’s really that simple.

Someone could have given that bird to a dog, or heated it up otherwise. And it was carefully and beautifully prepared, and I greatly resent calling the cooks’ work in this case the same as plastic, because it isn’t. It was a work of love, from brothers in arms, and it deserved at least honest coverage, if not respect.

I also ate those little orange things the Army cooks usually used for garnish.

  134. You know, I was looking through the archives for an old post i wanted to refer back to, and i had a new thought on this one.

It is such a mistake of them to focus on this issue. Why? Well, think back to the complaints bush had when he landed on the aircraft carrier, and how bush supposedly was wrong to be in a flight suit, despite the fact it was important safety gear. Well, I remember more than a few people noticing that every time they talked about the story, they put a pic of bush in a flight suit and it helped bush because women considered the image sexy.

ditto with the national guard story. i remember reading about even a lesbian democrat declaring the young Bush “hot” looking at pictures from that era.

okay, so scroll up and look at that pic. Sarah is looking pretty hot there, in a mainly effortless way. Do you think it helped her or hurt her for millions of men to see her like that?
