Obama Jokes About Going to See Hugo Chavez

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:34 am

Over the weekend, CBS White House Correspondent Mark Knoller published this message on Twitter:

Obama joked he’d have AF-1 fly home via South America so he could see Hugo Chavez. Some joke.

Yuk, yuk.

Coming next: jokes about political arrests and politically motivated yanking of broadcast licenses.

  1. that’s interesting cause even Viv Schiller’s National Soros Radio is noticing today that bumblef’s oil drilling policies are doing a lot to prop up the value of Hugo’s oil reserves

  2. I’m actually surprised he hasn’t met with Fidel yet.

  3. Pat,

I wonder if the investment counselors for the LAbor Unions many trust funds think that joke is hilarious as many are heavily invested in oil and gas stocks which have underperformed their foriegn competitors – some directly due to the consistent threat and actual seizing of assets and production shares in Venezuela’s numerous oil fields.

Why is Venezuela significant? THese are older more mature fields that surprizingly have shown relsilence in bottoming out and have paid for themselves many times over. Some were estimated to have a life of a decade and have lasted 30 years at profitable levels.

They contribute to a basket of earnings, a heavier percentage than other domestic and foreign ventures

  4. Hugo probably needs some comforting since another FARC leader bit the dust over the weekend. Hugo loves him some FARC and cool narco dollars.

  6. EricPW – Isn’t Venezuela’s daily oil production down significantly (like 50%) from when Chavez came to power? While that obviously extends the projected useful life of fields, his seizures of the assets of foreign oil field supply companies does little to engender the confidence of investors required to upgrade his infrastructure to more efficiently process his low grade crude for export. I don’t know whether Iran has the coin to help him out and don’t know where he stands with the Chinese. Obama is probably clueless.

  9. And we know that President Obama was joking because . . . ?

At some point, it would be unsurprising to see President Chavez summon President Obama see President Obama meet with President Chavez. The only question concerns whether President Obama will bow.

  10. When you consider how the POTUS said nothing in response to Chavez’s feverish rants against the US in his presence not that long ago, some joke indeed. He appeared to not only agree with the remarks, but enthusiastically so.

I’m sorry, but you wasted an adverb; please, don’t do that again.

Yep, not to bore you but even the Saudis and the IRANIANS have figured out that once the American Oil Companies leave (including their expertise in maintaing CHEAPLY old oil fields) production falls. Saudi is now offering not contracts but permanent positions for Americans in Aramco. Why is this significant, if I were to sign on with ENOC, CNOC, QP or KP I would typically get a three year contract with nationals under my supervision but with rules that nationals (saudis, emiratis, Chinese, Qataris, or Kuwaitis) these citizens cannot be criticised, demoted or fired, now thats changing Americans are being but in top manangement positions in Aramco and told fire who you want to, but get the oil flowing, including Saudi’s.

    Scary…

  15. EricPWJohnson – That’s all well and good, but relate it back to Venezuela and Chavez and his quest to stay in power. He desperately needs his oil revenues. The U.S. buys his product at the going rate, but does he not use he exports to curry favor via favorable pricing with other countries. Keeping volume up is critical to him.

  16. Actually, they’ve already met, and a jolly meeting it was, too.

  20. Obama’s “joke” comes at an especially strange time since Chavez recently seized control of several middle-class housing complexes and is threatening to take over Venezuela’s last independent television station. It’s hard to believe an American President would even want to talk to a leader like Chavez, let alone suggest he’d like to visit him.

Only to a certain extent, if I remember correctly. Venezuelan oil has a high sulfur content (I think I have that detail right) which only US refineries are interested in purchasing. In essence, it’s been our money that’s been funding him all this time.

  22. It’s our refineries in Houston, specifically that do the job

  23. Chavez drove out a lot of oil field technicians and his production is down. He was an example of bad timing as he tried to pressure workers just as Alberta was hiring like crazy. Venezuela is slowly grinding to a stop.

  24. Dictators like to meet with each other to ally against democracies: the drei kaiserbud, the butler-Stalin pact, etc. So why shouldn’t Obama meet with Chavez?

Are you kidding? This American President wants to learn from him!
