Generalissimo Francisco Franco Still Dead; Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi Still Alive

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:18 am

He was released one year ago today, meaning we’re nine months past the three months he was supposed to live.

At least the Scots have learned their lesson:

Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said yesterday: “It was a decision I didn’t choose to make, it was a decision I had to make.

“It was my responsibility and accordingly I followed the rules and laws of Scotland.

“I acted appropriately and I stand by the decision.”

Nothing inspires confidence like standing by a stupid decision. Apparently the UK Foreign Office has a slightly different view:

The Government said the decision by Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to release the only man convicted of the 1988 Pan Am jet bombing was a mistake.

The Foreign Office warned today that any celebration of his freedom would be “tasteless, offensive and deeply insensitive”.

A spokeswoman said: “The Government is clear that Megrahi’s release was a mistake.”

The Foreign Office has warned Libya not to celebrate Megrahi’s freedom.

  5. Let’s face it the british have been p—-ies about this from the beginning. I’m not upset that cancer hasn’t killed him. i am upset that the government of great britain hasn’t killed him themselves.

But let me guess, the british are too “enlightened” for that.

if i was president, i would send a team of navy seals to snipe him. well, that and to shoot Roman Polanski in the nards. In the latter case, I would call it “disarming a deadly weapon.”

  6. If Eric Holder can’t manage to botch the prosecution of KSM in time for him to turn over the first shovel of dirt for the new Islamic Center, perhaps Al Megrahi can be encouraged to take KSM’s place in the Grand Celebration of Islam’s Victory over the Great Satan.

The mistake is calling it a “mistake”, a word what’s meaning has been bastardized as effectively as it appears “marriage” soon will be.

Is there such a thing as doing something wrong anymore?

    You beat me to it…
    Well Done!

If the Foreign Office wanted to be taken seriously, they would have forwarded their warning through the RR center in Simi Valley.

  12. Megrahi would have joined Franco if Obamacare had not passed.

Sounds like a winning campaign issue for the Democrats.

  14. His release is another example of PC mindset run wild and European Anti-Americanism.

Our sins in the Middle East repaid by releasing a terrorist who killed (mostly) Americans.

    Sad.

  17. This is one of the reasons I don’t mind seeing BP demonized relentlessly. I’d love it if we refused to permit this company to do any work near our country, forever. They let a murderer free to placate Libya… they should have to pay some business expense for that.

Sadly, the idea of just leaving mass murderers in jail for punishment isn’t enough, apparently.

This kind of thing is why I don’t fill up at a Citgo, even if the market’s confused and the effect is very indirect.

Cant you people see that this is not his fault. It was a decision he did not decide to decide. Even though he decided it. Have a heart folks. Have a heart. At least one good thing has come out of this, miracles do happen. Megrahi has been healed of cancer! Praise be to allah.

  19. A mistake, as in an honest mistake? No it wasn’t; it was a bribe.

“BP told the U.K. government that we were concerned about the slow progress that was being made in concluding a Prisoner Transfer Agreement with Libya,” BP said in a statement. “We were aware that this could have a negative impact on U.K. commercial interests, including the ratification by the Libyan government of BP’s exploration agreement.”

  21. Obama Calls for Re-incarcerating Lockerbie Bomber

    The AP reports:

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. — The Obama administration asked Friday that the only person convicted for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 be returned to a Scottish prison.

John Brennan, President Barack Obama‘s counterterrorism adviser, told reporters accompanying the vacationing leader that the U.S. has “expressed our strong conviction” to Scottish officials that Abdel Baset Al-Megrahi (AHB’-dehl BAH’-seht AH’-lee ahl-meh-GRAH’-hee) should not remain free. The comments came on the first anniversary of Al-Megrahi’s release.

Brennan criticized what he termed the “unfortunate and inappropriate and wrong decision,” and added: “We’ve expressed our strong conviction that Al-Begrahi should serve out the remainder – the entirety – of his sentence in a Scottish prison.”

  22. What’s that they say about closing the barn door?

This is beyond pathetic. It’s just playing short term politics, again, which is getting extremely tiresome.

Unless Obama knows, somehow, that he can get this result, then he’s just making the US look impotent. Maybe he can ask Iran to dispose of their nukes once they have some? This is stupid.

  23. Can we be blunt, Musa Kusa, the Michigan state educated(just like the Company man who dealt with him,)secret police chief, and now foreign
minister, likely gave the order, for Lockerbie and probably La Belle disco in Berlin, for obvious reasons we are never going after the real people
    responsible

  24. As I commented at the WSJ on this:
In a just world, MacAskill would suffer a “hunting accident” on the Scottish Moors,
    and al-Megrahi would perish in an “auto accident” somewhere in Libya;
but, the SAS doesn’t do such things anymore, do they?

What is really needed is some assistance here in
helping him make is way across the river Styx.

Clearly, the poor man is trapped on this side, and
needs some help to make the crossing.

You know, “Theo van Gogh style”.

    “Alahu Akbar” or whatever.

    Yeah, that’s the ticket.
