Capitol Police Investigate Hoaxes

[Guest post by DRJ]

The U.S. Capitol Police are investigating hoax emails sent to area media that claimed Senators Diane Feinstein and Patrick Leahy had died.

I guess some people crave attention but I’m not sure if this is a crime. If it isn’t, it soon will be.

  1. I wish to protest the obvious sexism displayed in this news item!
Why is it relevant to report Leahy’s age, but not the age of Feinstein?
Would that lead to questions of what type of hair-coloring the Senior Senator from CA is buying (by the bbl I imagine)?

My first thought too was whether this would actually rise to the level of a crime. I suppose if the email message was concocted to look like it came from Senator Leahy’s office it might run afoul of some fraud statute or other, but it doesn’t seem like this is a huge deal.

But as you mention, DRJ, Congressional egos are such that they will no doubt soon criminalize any purposely false reporting of the death of any member, any former member, or any spouse or kin of the same. Probably be $250,000 fine or 10 years in prison, and we will no doubt have to expand the Capitol Police Department to include a Congressional Fraud Investigation Unit.

  7. I heard that Senator Feinstein and Senator Leahy both just had sex-change operations and they are eloping to Thailand together.

  8. a Congressional Fraud Investigation Unit

You mean someone is finally going to investigate the fraud that goes on on Capitol Hill?
I thought they outlawed that in the dustup over the FBI’s searching of Cold-Cash Jefferson’s Capitol Office?

  9. Wishful thinking is not a crime. If it was 99% of us would be in jail. I wake up every morning hoping for headlines that flood the airways world wide for about 30 minutes and then announce we will be electing a new government in D.C.

it would be faster and easier to just change offices and seats in the Senate, as i doubt anyone would notice the difference, and no need to head to Thailand, when they could just get married in Frisco.

  15. They claimed Leahy had died of liver cancer and the press fell for it?
Leahy was stage center at the Kagan hearings and in no way looked like a person suffering from terminal cancer of any sort.

  16. I knew an intern for a Freshman House member who had actually worked for a primary election competitor.

At one point, he obnoxiously told a rude caller that he couldn’t forward their call to Randy Neugebauer’s personal line because ‘he just died, sorry’. Then he hung up. Apparently the caller was gullible and called the press, which after a short bit of confusion got the intern fired and the University that Sponsored him a bit of embarrassment (they still always place an intern with this member, though).

Oh, the little lame drama of these Hill dweebs.
