Boehlert Tries to Cover His Tracks, and Fails Miserably, Stepping on the Rake in the Process

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:35 pm

An addendum to this morning’s post revealing the dishonesty of Eric Boehlert:

Boehlert’s Smirking Chimp post now contains the following caveat: “Please note that these Media Matters columns appear here with permission but are not posted by Eric Boehlert.”

Here today

He just added this today, obviously in response to my post.. The cached version shows the language was not present in the original.

Not there yesterday

In other words, he’s trying to cover his tracks by sneaking in a caveat.

Pathetic.

What’s worse is that the caveat doesn’t help him. Remember: Boehlert claimed The Smirking Chimp posted his columns “independently,” writing a long sneer-filled post claiming I knew nothing about “how the Internets work” and posting on Twitter:

If @patterico were any dumber, it would hurt. I didn’t “cross publish” my column at Smirking Chimp, idiot.

And now his big defense is that he authorizes cross-posting, but he doesn’t press the publish button himself? On a blog at The Smirking Chimp called “Eric Boehlert’s blog”?

Are you kidding me?!

Unbelievable.

By the way, that’s how virtually all of my posts work at Big Journalism. I publish posts here, and then authorize them to be published at Big Journalism. Editors there decide whether to publish them. I have never logged in or hit a publish button at Big Journalism. In rare cases I will modify a post for their site; when I do, I e-mail the modifications to the editors.

Although I don’t hit the “publish” button myself, I would never claim that Big Journalism “independently” publishes my posts, or imply I had no involvement in the process.

Because, unlike Eric Boehlert, I am not a weasel.

  1. Patterico, I sent you a link to Red Eye’s view of Media Matters. Seems accurate, given Mr. Boehlert’s mad skillz.

  5. …and to refocus the arguement, it’s all about whether Boehlert should post/allow his stuff to be cross posted on a site named Smirking Chimp — given the left’s choice to compare Pres. Bush to chimps.

Oh, and the press never “Rolled over for Bush.”

Please Mr. B., just admit that the left mocked Bush with zero respect for the office he held.

Is there such a thing as “beating a dead weasel?” I think we get the point about Eric Boehlert, whoever he was.

I haven’t been following your commenting problems, so this is probably redundant; but the auto-preview feature isn’t working for me at the moment: I type in the comment box, but nothing appears below.

Dafydd, that’s the way it works at the moment. They’re working on it.

  15. For a guy talking about his internet knowledge it’s kind of funny that he doesn’t understand the concept of cache. He’s like the guy at Starbucks going from table to table because he can’t get to a particular webpage. 50 years ago the only way I could get channel 56 was to grasp the TV antenna so I get where this comes from but…..come on!

  16. You need a recurring “award” for folks like Boehlert: A ‘shopped pic of Michael Flatley, with Boehlert’s head replacing Flatley’s, captioned, LORD OF THE DOUCHE.

  17. I just LURVE watching Patterico deliver an Azz Kickin! Great job on the Internets.

  18. The Smirking Chimp website owner sets up those accounts himself to reprint posts. It is the owner that put Boehlert’s picture there and wrote the bio. Boehlert had nothing to do with setting up that account. He simply gave the SC owner permission to reprint the articles. That’s how the Chimp works.

    Joseph Nobles (2dd372)

  19. Are you sure, Joseph? Patterico demonstrated how he set up his own account at the Smirking Chimp website. If the owner of that website is the only one setting up the accounts and reprinting posts, how could Patterico do that? And how do you know Eric Boehlert didn’t do it, too?

    DRJ (d43dcd)

  20. I know because I used to moderate at the Smirking Chimp.

The owner is not the only one setting up accounts. Anyone can, as Patterico demonstrated. But for Eric Boehlert and many others who you find on the “front page,” the owner is the one doing it. He (the owner) does it as a timesaver and organizing tool with his site software.

    Joseph Nobles (2dd372)

  21. More and more pathetic.

However, I think this is the first time I’ve forced a Named Player like Boehlert to try covering his tracks like this, so I am inordinately proud. 🙂

    Dodd (706ab0)

  22. Joseph Nobles, do you see how “He simply gave the SC owner permission to reprint the articles.” is the key here?

  23. Don’t blame me, and don’t blame thee, blame that man behind the tree.

  24. Boehlert had nothing to do with setting up that account. He simply gave the SC owner permission to reprint the articles.

    Comment by Joseph Nobles

    I detect a contradiction.

Seems like all reporters agree with their publisher, who does something that gets the work to the audience. That’s what it means to be published.

There’s really no way around it. Eric Boehlert publishes his work at the Smirking Chimp. Sure, there’s an intermediary perhaps, but Eric is the person who decided to put his content there. It was up to him.

Boehlert has no problem with disrespecting a president, in principle. Obviously he’s done so. But disagree with one he likes, and he freaks out. Because he’s a jerk.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  25. That might be one of the most pathetic attempts at asscovering I have ever seen.

    JD (41e5f8)

  26. Here’s the ONLY relevant question:

Does Boehlert own-up to the comment, itself, Yes or No?

What’s that — yes, he does? Okay then. Everything else is lies, obfuscation & bullshit.

    [note: released from moderation. –Stashiu]

    Icy Texan (94a0eb)

  27. So Boehlert did not register, someone did it on his behalf, and though he knows of it, he neither approves or disapproves but is rather neutral about someone else using his picture and name and likeness in marketing their little old website?

    JD (41e5f8)

  28. Actually, JD, more like he explicitly approved, but did not physically do the work.

They asked him, and he said yes. All his hard work can go on ‘The Smirking Chimp’ because he, at best, has no problem being closely associated with ‘The Smirking Chimp’ and has no fundamental problem with disrespecting the office of the presidency.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  29. If “Smirking Chimp” is the worst thing George W. Bush gets called in history, he’ll be the luckiest guy on Earth.

    Joseph Nobles (186d8c)

  30. P.S. No, here’s the point. Patterico went through this whole living-the-Dan-Rather-font-glory-days exercise to show Boehlert actively posted his information at a website, and it was all baloney. Sniffing about how Boehlert doesn’t mind being associated with the Chimp is all sour grapes.

    Joseph Nobles (186d8c)

  31. 30 – Sorry, Joe. But he allows his work to be published on your site. No-one thinks Krugman personally typesets his columns in the Gray lady (to more properly use your metaphor), either. He still ‘publishes’ them wherever he’s given permission for them to appear.

Boehlert obviously doesn’t give a fig about disrespecting a President – just this President. Nor did he think through the implications of writing that piece and having it appear on your site. Nor did you see any irony in putting it up yourself on your lame hate site. Not that that’s much of a surprise, mind.

    Dodd (d8078d)

  32. More crack research here at Patterico: I’m not the owner of Smirking Chimp, I’m a former moderator. I don’t put the articles up, the owner does. I am using English here.

    Joseph Nobles (186d8c)

  33. Congrats on using English. I know that must have been quite a chore for you. Apparently nuance was not covered in your ESL classes, as you continue to prove the point being made. And, you are a drooling imbecile like Hooten, and as disingenuous as Boehlert. No wonder he does not mind associating with you and the rest of your ilk that moderate the Chimp. Isn’t calling the President a chimp racist?

    ColonelHaiku (2ce3dc)

  37. Well, I know that the precise nature of Mr. Noble’s relationship to the hate site in question is clearly the central issue. Far more important than the fact that his woefully strained defense of Boehlert’s participation therewith has been thoroughly debunked.

I regret presuming he had more importance to this issue than he now says he does. Consider any implication on my part that he matters at all retracted.
