Obama: Working to Revive the Economy

The good news is President Obama is worrying about how to help people start businesses and grow the economy. The bad news is the economy he’s worried about is in Gaza:

“We agree that Israelis have the right to prevent arms from entering into Gaza that can be used to launch attacks into Israeli territory. But we also think that it is important for us to explore new mechanisms so that we can have goods and services, and economic development, and the ability of people to start their own businesses, and to grow the economy and provide opportunity within Gaza.

And so we are going to be working hand in hand to make sure that we come up with a better approach, and urge Israel to work with all parties involved — Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, and the international community — to find a resolution to this issue.

In the meantime, the United States — which is already the biggest humanitarian aid donor in Gaza — is going to be announcing an additional $400 million in assistance for housing, school construction, business development — not only in Gaza, but also in the West Bank, because we think it’s important for us to reaffirm once again our commitment to improving the day-to-day lives of ordinary Palestinians.”

Those Gaza residents who made phone calls supporting Obama’s candidacy knew what they were doing.

Meanwhile, according to President Obama, the American economy is getting stronger every day. A meager 31% of Americans agree with him.

  1. And let’s not forget Obamacare, which was sold to us in the end as a “jobs bill”. Besides costing more than they planned, giving us less, creating more problems than it solves, and forcing many to loose their existing insurance, the bill pretty much killed what little economic recovery was taking place:

We’ve reached a point where the Carter administration looks much better.

  2. You have it backwards. Given how bad he is with the American economy, it is GOOD news that the economy is going to f**k over worry about is Gaza and not the US.

Perhaps the tab would be less if these heathens hadn’t petulantly
destroyed the greenhouses when they were ceded this land. The primary source of food and industry knocked out by childish thugs…to make what point?

  5. to make what point?

That it’s all the fault of the evil Israeli Joos. Didn’t you know that by now?

  6. You know my first thought was, “what, by driving gaza’s economy into the ditch and blowing a hole in their deficit?” And then it clicked. Yes, that is the plan. Obama is secretly pro-isreal and hopes to disable gaza as a power. Its downright diabolical.

  8. All Right, it’s time to start making a list of all the people who voted for Barack Obama, so we can survey them to find out if they want to take a Mulligan and have another go at picking a President for the USA.

  9. Tell me again why we are giving them aid. So they won’t try even harder to kill us or our allies? They shouldn’t get a dime.

  10. then there is the moratorium on offshore deep well drilling. who needs jobs? o, and next up – plane crashes, all flights of all airlines to be grounded.

  11. The economy should respond well to the new law removing mortgage interest deductions. That will do wonders for housing prices. Thank god my house is sold. My only question is whether, in spite of the trouble it would be, should I wait a year and rent so the housing prices will really be in the crapper before I buy. Millions are making the same choice.

Maybe the government will do a GM on the FHA and just take all the houses and put ACORN volunteers living in them.

  12. Any Kongresskritter who votes Aye on this proposal has just written his own invitation to a tar-and-feathering.
If they thought the crowds of seniors chasing Rostey through the streets of Chicago were unsettling, they ain’t seen nothin’ yet if they vote this turkey into law.
There is only one way this would work is to repeal the 16th-Amendment and go to a consumption based tax system.

  13. NO PEACE NO AID

Isn’t it sort of an alien concept to provide aid to a terrorist organization running an enclave which has a stated goal of wiping one of our closest allies from the face of the earth. Shouldn’t the aid have a few strings attached?

  15. I just spoke to someone who voted for obama and she informed me this is all still w’s fault. Probably 2 years from now, it will still be w’s fault. I wonder when that will wear thin?

I wonder why obama doesn’t just tell them to raise taxes, borrow money for a stimulus plan and implement obamacare. He thinks that stuff will work here.

  17. Obama’s every effort actually worsen’s the economy. The How to Kill a Recovery link in the first comment is a must-read – it shows graphically what the Democrats’ emphasis on their faux healthcare “reform” actually did.

  18. I dunno. I’m not entirely convinced that the mortgage interest deduction should not be removed from the tax code. The libertarian in me does not like the idea that owners receive a subsidy that similarly situated renters do not get. All the people who refinanced and took money out of their home equity in 2005-2008 were incentivised, if not rewarded, by having their higher payoff amount subject to the mortgage interest deduction. It felt good for a while but would so many have stretched so far had they not been getting the additional tax deduction? I even know some people who took out a new mortgage on a fully paid off house. That is hardly the “let’s make it easier to be a home owner” original purpose of the mortgage interest deduction.

I’ve personally benefited mightily from the mortgage deduction over the years but lately I’m having trouble reconciling that form of tax treatment with my over all political principles and my general dislike of tax credits.

  19. Stashiu3 #9 – I suspect that about the only effective way to use that Aid money is to allocate the $400 Million, and then knock off $1 Million for each rocket fired from Gaza into Israel … that way, it’s up to the inhabitants fo Gaza how much Aid they actually get …

    Alasdair (e7cb73)

  20. elissa, your position may make theoretical sense. But this is not the time to put another crash into housing values. And perhaps more importantly, our economy does not need the uncertainty that even floating such a trial balloon causes.

It is uncertainty that is causing the current “capital strike” that is delaying our economy’s recovery.

  25. Some math from Michael Rubin…

    1. There have been eight terrorist attacks against Israel since Obama’s inauguration, so Obama is paying President Abbas a modest sum of $50 million per attack.

    2. The were 2,048 rockets and mortars fired from Gaza into Israel in 2008, but let’s not hold that against President Obama since, obviously, to channel our commander-in-chief, that was President Bush’s fault. And during Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli incursion into Gaza from January 1–18, 406 rockets were fired into Israel. Again, let’s not count these against Obama; he hadn’t taken his oath of office yet. Since Hamas’s third ceasefire, however, there have been 370 missiles fired from Gaza into Israel. So, if we want to discount terrorist attacks and just count missile attacks, then President Obama is rewarding Hamas to the tune of $1,080,000 for every rocket or mortar launched.

  26. AJB, your post is interesting as it shows that each year the total declines and the vast majority is military spending. I assume you would prefer the Israelis build their own military hardware and compete with our defense industry. They have excellent fighters and tanks and a very good anti-missile system.

The Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act of 2009 (“PACT Act”) (S.1147) has now been signed by President Obama. The bill takes effect (June 29th). This legislation will make ALL cigarettes, RYO, MYO and smokeless tobacco products nonmailable.

This law means you will no longer be able to purchase these LEGAL products by mail-order, telephone order, or the Internet, because the United States Postal Service, along with UPS, Fed-Ex and all other carriers will be prohibited by law from delivering your orders to you.
