Obama to Meet with BP Officials

The Obama Administration has summoned the top BP officials to a meeting at the White House next Wednesday. I’m fairly certain BP ranks with Israel’s Netanyahu in Obama’s estimation, so whoever shows up shouldn’t expect lunch.

I wonder if the White House would let BP bring a videographer?

  1. Hope he doesn’t miss his tee-time.

  2. So while Obama is golfing into a hole, BP is putting holes into the Gulf.

  3. Tell me, given his threats do they bring their attorneys?

    Bob Leibowitz (e88839)

  4. The request was made by Admiral Thad Allen, National Incident Commander, in a letter sent directly to Carl-Henric Svanberg today.

Allen says that “time is of the essence” in resolving the issues in the Gulf, as they ensure that all individuals and communities impacted by the spill are made whole.

“I request that you and any appropriate officials from BP meet with senior Administration officials on Wednesday, June 16, 23010 to discuss these timely issues,” Allen writes, “President Obama will participate in a portion of the meeting.”

Frankly, I don’t quite understand why now, 50+ days into the spill, time is of the essence because earlier this week it didn’t seem to matter when the president said, “my experience is when you talk to a guy like a BP CEO, he’s going to say all the right things to me. I’m not interested in words. I’m interested in actions.”

So why is he interested a week later? What’s changed?

  5. About time he started listening to Matt Lauer.

  6. So why is he interested a week later? What’s changed?

    Poll numbers.

  7. Dana – the only thing that has changed is the public perception of his feckless leadership, or rather, lack thereof.

  8. It seems like Obama and/or his staff’s first instincts are generally wrong, which is why they often have to reverse course later.

  9. I hope the BP officials ask The One, the constitutional scholar, on what legal basis they think that BP should pay for the known consequences of the Barcky political decision to issue a moratorium on drilling.

  10. “So why is he interested a week later? What’s changed?”

Dana – Do you even have to ask? Remember his campaign promises?

Just because he looked like a complete idiot on national TV over not having a good excuse for not meeting with BP and Gibbs threw out a lame excuse today that the Board of Directors and not Hayward is where the real power is, does not mean Obama changed his mind, though. Thad Allen called this meeting.

  11. Barack Obama is to the Constitution what JaMarcus Russell is to professional football.

    Mike LaRoche (d4323e)

  12. Actually, I made a quick, stupid ha-ha post, but the real reason is pretty evident and MU789’s post is exactly right.

Some lefty pundit or journalist asks Gibbs if the President is mad about the spill: Bam, he’s looking for an ass to kick. Some lefty journalist asks if he’s spoken to the CEO of BP: Bam, he’s going to talk with the head of BP.

Cramming down health-care legislation: Bam, “we need to explain it now.” “God damn America:” Bam, “I wasn’t listening.”

Closing Guantanamo? Bam, “Gibbs, say something.” Multi-trillion dollar deficit: Bam, “Inherited.”

I could go on and on, but when it really comes down to the brass tacks, when it really matters, when all else fails and there’s nothing left, it always comes back to the 2010 Democrat platform:

    “Bush did it.”

That may work, but boy, it is a lousy out.

  13. Ag80 & JD,

Absolutely right! It seems the only thing that moves our president to action is having been criticized combined with bad poll numbers. The action only occurs though, after he’s had time to bristle and preen and reassure us of his importance and that is indeed, in charge…

I heard several residents of Louisiana interviewed today and they were just appalled at the President’s moratorium. Clearly oil drilling and shrimping/fishing are vital sources of income and yet because fishing/shrimping may now be indefinitely undone, they could not understand why on earth the President believes it’s in the residents’ best interest to cut off the other primary source of income and employment.

    Dana (1e5ad4)

  14. Ag80,

Heh. You might be onto something… It would appear our President is a man of very weak convictions. It’s what happens when one cares more about what others think of them rather than standing firm on what they believe to be right.

    Dana (1e5ad4)

  15. “When you talk to a guy like a BP CEO, he’s going to say all the right things to me. I’m not interested in words. I’m interested in actions.”

So, o doesn’t mind giving jihadists rights, but, we can’t give any corporations rights?

We will be able to tell how the meeting goes if Hayward has to leave via the trash pile.

How bad does it feel to have a real asshole as president?
