Comment Problems Fixed?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:18 pm

The tech guys think they have the comments fixed. Leave a comment and tell us whether they’re right.

  1. The comment preview does not appear to be working, so that’s one issue.

    Patterico (c218bd)

  2. This is a test of the comment section.
This is only a test of the comment section.
If this was a real comment, you would be gasping in amazement and hilarity at my bon mots and pithy wit.
This was a test of the comment section.

P.S. I have found that for the test to prove indicative, someone must make another comment after mine. (sometimes) (maybe).

    jakee308 (ace517)

  3. The comment display / cookie issue appears fixed to me after a handful of test views, with comments being made. No need to delete cookie to see comments.

My thanks to “enoch” et al for the work.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  4. This is the second part of a two part comment test. I have found that the comments disappear AFTER one has commented AND someone else (even oneself) has commented after.

    Here goes. 5, 4, 3, 2 …..

    jakee308 (ace517)

  5. This is the third part of a 2 part comment test. WTF?

Anyhoo, I am tentatively declaring that the comments seem to be working properly as all comments are showing up even after someone has commented after one’s comment.

I’ve said this before so don’t bet on it. :>

    jakee308 (ace517)

  6. It’s working for me here, except for the comment preview. It’s not showing comments on the sidebar at The Jury, but the comments and the comment preview work.

    DRJ (d43dcd)

  7. oops. In rereading my previous comment (the 2nd) it sounded like I meant the comments were still disappearing. What I meant to convey was that multiple comments needed to be posted to determine if the issue had actually been solved.

After commenting on this thread and another, I’m willing to state that it seems that the comment problems has been solved. KUDOS TO THE TECHIES!!

Please excuse my earlier poor choice of words.

  8. white screen of death test.

    redc1c4 (fb8750)

  9. That reminds me. I still get the white screen after commenting but it’s fine if I refresh.

    PS — I’m using Firefox.

  10. does this work?

    Dr. K (1c5e6a)

  11. Let’s try again.

    Dr. K (1c5e6a)

  12. Interesting. I got a message “You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.”

  14. Seems to be working fine for me, now. I posted a comment in two threads and can see them now.

    Ed from SFV (f0e1cb)

  15. I’ve really enjoyed a website I saw yesterday called http://asseeninshreveport.com.

I don’t have comment preview, but I would happily trade that away for the comments working well. And I’d happily trade comments working for the site surviving an instalanche. I appreciate all the work.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  16. still there: i have to reload page to see new comments, but i don’t have to clear cookies to get them.

    better but not fixed.

  17. I don’t get any white screens. This browser has saved cookies from this site for ages. Comments are working correctly for me.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  18. Works fine. Just hit refresh to see new comments if you linger over some post.

  19. So how about some jokes?

    Q. Did you hear about the kidnapping, yesterday?
    A. My God, what happened?
    Q. He woke up.

    nk (db4a41)

  20. Things seem to have been repaired to a manageable level.
Comment Preview would be a nice-to-have again, plus the automatic refresh upon clicking back to the front page; but they aren’t fatal flaws.

    The Lord replies, ‘A penny.’

Smith asks, ‘Can I have a penny?’

  25. John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully.
“Give me one last request, dear,” he said.

“Of course, John,” his wife said softly.

“Six months after I die,” he said, “I want you to marry Bob.”

“But I thought you hated Bob,” she said.

With his last breath John said, “I do.”

  26. We’ve asked the tech people to work on restoring the comment preview. They’ve handled everything else so hopefully they can fix that, too.

    No preview, though.

  29. it hasn’t been working for me, hope it’s fixed.

  30. It will be nice to see the cookie issue cleared up. But I must say, in spite of the cookie problem, I think the site has been loading much more reliably and quickly that it has for a long time, when a mere handful of people had learned to appreciate the site. So kudos and extra kudos to the tech gurus.

#25- That’s pretty funny. However, I did have a friend whose wife on her death bed told him to marry “Jane”, who was one of her best friends and had helped them and their young son quite a bit during her decline with cancer. She was about 30 when she died. They did get married not long after her death. So, very sad yet also very touching. It was like “passing the batton” in a rely race of sorts.

  31. I hope it’s fixed, too.

    Myron (3d5c6b)

  32. Nope, not fixed because Myron is still posting.

And comment preview hasn’t ever done me much good because it doesn’t parse any tags.

  35. redc1c4 – *which* Moron ?

    Alasdair (205079)

  36. Right now I should be number 36. The problem from my end was that I would leave a comment and then was never able to read it or anything after it, or it would say 36 comments and I would only get 17. Let’s see.

  39. Thanks to all for your patience. I would cite details of a certain plug in that comes standard with this version of WPMU that happened to be the culprit. But I won’t mention supercache for WPMU as being a pile of shiteness. We shall see how the site holds up when it gets a crushing link (ie Instalanche) – until then, we can be pleased that people can actually comment and discuss.

    enoch_root (174a66)

  40. Leave a comment to tell you if comments are fixed, and if they’re not, you won’t be able to tell? Oh, the irony!

  41. the formatting is a little weird on this thread, but i am afraid to have anyone mess with it, because its truly a nit.

And i would say, leave out the live preview. first, it doesn’t preview formatting. second, it slows down the system. if you have to have a preview, make it a non-live version.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  42. that all being said, i am cautiously optimistic that this is working right. even the formatting is normal on other threads.

  67. Comment by nk — 6/8/2010 @ 8:52 am

Perhaps you need to rethink your theories on burial?
How high does the water table have to be to get to graves on high ground, versus those down in the holler?

    AD - RtR/OS! (a0fcb6)

  68. Hmm, so you’re saying we’re less likely to drink dead people if they’re buried high?

    nk (db4a41)

  69. First attempt to submit comment failed to produce results. The Comment by “You” appeared, but when I refreshed the screen, it disappeared.

I resubmitted it and it now shows as #24 on the Van der Sloot thread, for now at least.

  70. Comment by nk — 6/8/2010 @ 12:16 pm

    Think about it.
Water always finds its’ own level.
If the water table is at (just for the sake of argument) 500′ above sea level, are you going to site a cemetary in the valley at 510′, or up on the slopes at 550′?
BTW, do you locate a sewage outfall in the river upstream, or downstream from a community?

    AD - RtR/OS! (a0fcb6)

  71. ropelight,

It originally went to spam for some reason and I thought I fished it out quickly enough that I didn’t need to make a note of it. You submitted it twice, yes? I only fished out one.

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  72. BTW, do you locate a sewage outfall in the river upstream, or downstream from a community?

    Comment by AD – RtR/OS! — 6/8/2010 @ 1:00 pm

That’s what I meant. That the cemeteries are upstream. But your point makes sense. Better to have the cemeteries where we only have to worry about the rain and snow runoff instead of where water accumulates?

    nk (db4a41)

  73. And it looks like comments have come half-way unfixed.

    nk (db4a41)

  74. It’s not like the rest of the ground isn’t chock full of dead animals and the byproducts of their lives, anyway. Just make tea with grandma water.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  75. Good God – the comments have been commented to death here. I am thinking of selling Comment Offset Credits if anyone is interested.

    enoch_root (9548cd)

  76. BTW, do you locate a sewage outfall in the river upstream, or downstream from a community?

not sure but G*d, in her infinite wisdom, located them next to the playground. 😀

    redc1c4 (fb8750)

  77. #72 nk:

Better to have the cemeteries where we only have to worry about the rain and snow runoff instead of where water accumulates?

Rather more desirable to subject the dead to dessication rather than liquefaction. Less spreading out that way.

    EW1(SG) (edc268)

  78. What is weird is that comments 1 through 21 are double spaced and can easily be read and then from 22 on are single spaced and are hard to read. FYI.

    BT (74cbec)

  79. You make it so we can talka like this alla time, enoch_root.

    nk (db4a41)

  80. nk, FYI, in NOLA, the water table is actually above ground, so everyone is buried in crypts, not graves.

    AD - RtR/OS! (a0fcb6)

  81. hooray, page 2 finally works!
but what happened to the ‘comment preview’ so that you could see if you got the style codes correct?

    seaPea (38ffcc)

  82. Same problem, Comments apparently submitted and designated by “Comment by You” but gone when I refresh the page.

Tried twice to submit the following on the Van der Sloot thread, note the comment number (32) which shows it briefly did see the light of day, only to be snuffed out, like it never existed.

32.Re: my comment at #24, there is new video of Van der Sloot and his victim meeting in the casino and leaving together. She looks OK, animated and in control of herself, as opposed to her zombie walk into his hostel.

If he drugged her, it was on the way to his room. I’d like to see time stamps on both sets of vids to determine if they stopped along the way for drinks.

[note: fished from spam filter. Sorry for the repetition, but I was running errands this morning and wasn’t around. Akismet should soon learn (again) that you’re a real commenter and not a spammer, but I’m sorry I didn’t get these sooner. Nothing to do with the site maintenance or anything you’ve done. The spam filter just suddenly decided you looked tasty and I have to retrain it that your comments are for looking, not eating. –Stashiu]

    ropelight (a3e072)

  83. For those who follow the “Recent Comments”, I just fished out some comments from ropelight in a less-than-timely manner. Look here for them please.

I would add that if he drugged her in the casino, it may have started to take effect by the time they reached the hostel. I’m sure that if toxicology shows she was drugged and Van der Sloot denies it, they will be looking carefully at the casino surveillance tapes to try and pin it down.

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  84. FWIW, stashiu, I have been able to comment from my CrackBerry for the last couple days.

    JD (0f9c01)

  85. Is it possible to create an “ignore” option for various monikers so we don’t even have to see their comments? Or an up/down vote button so comments can be “hidden”?

    John Hitchcock (9e8ad9)

  86. John Hitchcock,

Thank Milhouse. Haven’t tried it, so I can’t vouch for it.

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  87. Thanks, stash. I installed Greasemonkey and Milhouse’s script. I will be putting it to use forthwith on the most recent troll.

    John Hitchcock (9e8ad9)

  88. Excellent. It still shows the troll made a comment but gets rid of the comment, while allowing you to choose to read the comment if you want to. I approve of this script.

    John Hitchcock (9e8ad9)

  89. Notes by Milhouse from the script page:

    1. This script was ripped off from Dan Weber’s Volokh Ignore List.

    2. This isn’t sanctioned by Patterico at all.

    3. Don’t be an ass and say “I’m ignoring Carol!” Politely indicate what you are doing if the thread requires it (a third-party asks why you aren’t responding to Carol’s questions).

Thanks for testing it and telling a bit about how it works. I think it was necessary in this case to say who you tested it on. Just an advisement for anyone else using it in the future that those are pretty good guidelines.

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  90. Unfortunately I can’t use the script because what I do means reading every comment on every thread.

Wasn’t there someone else who tried to make a big deal about how few commenters there actually were here? A quick glance at Sitemeter shows how wrong they are, but I think I need to find out who that was and do some checking. Someone may have finally moved out of Mom’s basement. 😉

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  91. Stashiu3, I do think that there should be a Hall of Trollish Shame. It’s tough to keep them straight. Even without the name games.

    Eric Blair (e2121c)

  92. Yes, perhaps they can be cross-indexed by identifying marks…

    AD - RtR/OS! (e78fff)

  93. I would settle for a subcutaneous chip or even a bell collar. 😉

    Stashiu3 (44da70)

  94. Too bad they can’t be forced to wear one of those dog collars that shock when you go beyond the boundary.

    AD - RtR/OS! (e78fff)

  95. Yeah, like maybe when they use the CAPS key, the liberal equivalent of citations — zap!
