I Would Criticize the Helen Thomas Coverage in the L.A. Times . . .

Filed under: Dog Trainer — Patterico @ 8:56 pm

. . . if it existed.

That’s right: the number of stories about Helen Thomas’s May 27 call for the Jews to “get the hell out of Palestine” in the L.A. Times print edition is . . . zero. (The one story that comes up in the search mentioning her name since May 27 does not address her call for the ethnic cleansing of Israel’s Jews.)

Kind of says it all, doesn’t it?

  1. Yep. No surpise there.

  2. this is both unexpected and unprecedented……but we are exploring a story based on a tip that George Bush was responsible for the brutal Israeli attack and that he had Dick Cheney spike Helen’s Metamucil bottle prior to the interview which certain Tea Baggers claim occurred.

    PS: you are all racists.

  3. Patrick–

Your mistake is that–perhaps out of sheer habit or an excess of decency–you continue to treat the Los Angeles Times as if it were a newspaper. It is a collection of department store ads and classifieds, with chunks of editorial matter that is lazy, late, and left-wing thrown in as window dressing, produced by writers and editors who apparently can’t find employment elsewhere in this dying industry, though by all accounts they spend vast amounts of their days sending out resumes. That is the Los Angeles Times.

  4. I’m not surprised. I mentioned on another thread that the LAT reported about the big pro-Israel rally taking place today in L.A.

I posted a comment in support of Israel and the rally – in spite of Helen Thomas’s hateful statement (which I linked) – and my comment was not approved.

I posted this morning when there were no comments yet up. Tonight two approved comments are up but not mine.

One of the approved comments was regarding the rally location, the other was spoke for itself, “Foreign terrorist events like this are a veritable goldmine for Homeland Security list-keepers.”

  6. I just sent Clark Hoyt, NY Times’s public editor a letter questioning its lack of coverage of Helen Thomas’s incendiary and racist comments. Newspaper and network TV blackouts of events that portray liberals in a bad light have unfortunately become more common. And it isn’t just a single outlet blacking these stories out, it is the whole gamut of them.

I would hate to think these blackouts are coordinated.

  8. And yet they tell themselves that they are going down the tubes because they print “real news”, which the public is too stupid to appreciate.

  9. This evening after you posted your piece they now have an AP story about her speaking engagement at Walt Whitman High School being canceled because of her comments.http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-us-thomas-israel-remarks,0,6472405.story It includes a paraphrase of her comments and a comment by Abe Foxman about her apology not going far enough. Typical of the paper to provide minimum coverage after the story has been covered else where. They couldn’t even bring themselves to have one of their own reporters write it up. Perhaps their media reporters etc took the weekend off?

  10. Perhaps [the LA Times] media reporters etc took the weekend off?

More likely they were all laid off over the weekend and replaced with two stoned college kids with iPhones and a Twitter account.

  11. that would be a step forward in talent and quality for the Times.

  12. YEP, it does. Helen is lebanese & has always been pro arab. In Helen’s world, jews didn’t arrive in the middle east until the 1940s.

The “blackouts,” as you call them, have been a staple feature of left wing news since at least the Viet Nam war, when they were coordinated by the ICM and KGB in the Kremlin; and provided the plot for the novel The Spike.

  14. I understand that there are many Jewish residents in the city of Angels.

You’d think they might be interested in Helen Thomas’ statement about the Jews, and thus might buy the newspaper in order to read about the story.

  15. Since when is “getting the hell out” of a place the same as “ethnic cleansing?”

Why does the Right so often exaggerate the sins of their opposition? Isn’t it enough to fight against what they actually say and do?

  16. Since when is “getting the hell out” of a place the same as “ethnic cleansing?”

So when Thomas wants all the Jews out of “palestine” does that mean she doesn’t want all the Jews out of “palestine?” I’m not an English major, but that sounds like a definition of ethnic cleansing. Is the fact that she did not state a desire to send in goose stepping soldiers to make them get out change her wishes? Should we hold off on our opinion of Helen’s anti-semitism until she releases a peer reviewed dissertation on how to send the Jews “home”?

Lets give her credit for a kinder and gentler way to have the Jews go home. It hardly makes her intentions honorable.

  17. Btw, now even high schools are shunning her: http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com/2010/06/they-did-it-for-children.html

just out of curiousity, has anyone on the hard left even condemned her? I am actually asking.

I love this crap. In this very quote, Helen Thomas is enormously exaggerating the sins of her opposition. But apparently this is a sin of the “Right”. mike, in fact, is making a dumb and excessive generalization too.

What isn’t an exaggeration is that demanding a region be cleansed of an ethnicity is calling for ethnic cleansing. Telling all the blacks to get the hell out of America would also be an ethnic cleansing demand. This isn’t very complicated.

Helen is wrong, of course. The nutjobs may not realize this, but the UN in 1940 took most of Israel away from the Israelis… who have been told they don’t belong there for the thousands of years they have been there. It’s their country and they will be there forever. Get used to it, Mike. Telling the Jews to go back to Poland and Germany is disgusting and racist, even if it’s a precious democrat who said it.

    Oh well.

Anyway its getting even colder. Thomas even has a former co-author dumping on her. http://blogs.cqpolitics.com/trailmix/2010/06/with-regrets.html

  24. #15–if you don’t think that means ethnic cleansing, just what do you think it means. If the Jews don’t live in Israel, where do you think she means to send them?

  25. Since when is “getting the hell out” of a place the same as “ethnic cleansing?”

1994, Kosovo (and other parts of the former Yugoslavia) had a civil war in which “getting the hell out” became the same as “ethnic cleansing” in general usage. In Israel the term was used at least as far back as the 1980s by some people to refer to Israel’s actions with regards to the Palestinians. While I think such uses are overblown myself, western media/academia has disagreed and uses the term to cover forced migration.

  28. should make it interesting when they then have to report her retirement. “Helen Thomas has retired, because she said really awful things we didn’t bother to tell you about.”

    Should enhance their reputation, nicely.

    Aaron Worthing (e7d72e)

  29. They will just report that Helen’s wish for lasting peace in the middle East upset the Right because they are all poopy heads and bullies. What media will challenge them?
