Israel Boards the Rachel Corrie

Filed under: International — DRJ @ 9:30 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Apparently the boarding was peaceful:

“At about 5:50 am on Saturday, the first reports came in over Twitter that the ‘Rachel Corrie’ had been boarded close to Gaza. Earlier the activists reported that their radar had been jammed, however their Twitter accounts continued to operate.”

That’s the good news. The bad news is the Guardian has inflammatory news about the dead on the Gaza flotilla:

“Nine Turkish men on board the Mavi Marmara were shot a total of 30 times and five were killed by gunshot wounds to the head, according to the vice-chairman of the Turkish council of forensic medicine, which carried out the autopsies for the Turkish ministry of justice today.”

  1. Rachel Corrie was a fan of using human shields. It’s sad to say this, but she paid the proper penalty for her war crimes. I realize she’s more a useful idiot that she was a terrorist, but the fact remains that she employed tactics that acknowledge the humanity of the actual good guys.

The bad guys actually target civilians, and try to hide behind them too.

I’m glad the participants of this blockade runner did not have to die for Israel to continue to protect herself. I’m not surprised some of these obvious attempts to smuggle weapons in will be loudly advertised as peaceful. Of course, as they invite scrutiny, that’s one of the clean runners. Kinda a weak attempt to fool anyone, but a lot of people want to be fooled.

It’s amazing that this is something the UN is freaking out about, something Obama is up in arms demanding investigations of, and Iran continues to build the bomb with far less agitation.

  2. If that Turkish pathologist can tell if the guy was shot from less than 45 cm, there is a job for him in the LA Coroner’s office.

  3. How many times have you watched a movie where the bad guy gets shot in the arm or chest only to miraculously come back in the final moments? The hero then shoots him dead. I respectfully suggest that the IDF has seen that movie many times before, and no longer relies on chance. Message to the ‘peace activists”, if you don’t want to get burnt, put down those matches.

My only surprise is that the Turks have not come up with footage of the organs of dead activists being harvested and sent to NYC and Tel Aviv. Still, it’s early yet, give them time.

  4. Good to hear the ship was boarded peacefully.

In the “so what, don’t bother me with facts department”, I think the findings are consistent with what the movies show and the story given by the Israeli commandos. By the time the 15th and last soldier was on deck, about 1 1/2 minutes after the first soldier, the landing party was in danger of being overwhelmed and they took out handguns and shot their assailants at point blank range. In a situation where a group of soldiers open fire on hostiles surrounding them only a few feet away, it makes sense to me that multiple bullet wounds would be found on each body. In that situation you don’t fire once and see if the person falls over.

So the pro-Palestinian witness said the soldiers had a “shoot to kill” policy? My understanding is that when shooting is called for it always is “shoot to kill”. If the officer/soldier is in need of using their weapon it is because they are in danger of imminent severe injury or death, shooting at arms and legs to “slow somebody down” is typically the stuff of movies. As far as shots to the head, I had heard that some were wearing bullet-proof vests. The videos show that most had vests of some type on, whether they were life vests for being on a boat I don’t know.

Besides, Turkey was behind the effort, not sure if I would believe what they said anyway.

Oh, btw, anyone see or hear how many soldiers were injured and how seriously? (Crickets chirping)

  6. “Jesus”- how about responding factually to the matter at hand.

Prior to there being a UN to make a UN resolution, Jews and non-Jews supportive of the concept of a Jewish state had been relocating to Israel even prior to 1900.

Furthermore, there were no “Palestinians” or “Arabs” forced to leave Israel when it was founded. Those that left did so when their Arab neighbors tried to destroy Israel, the same neighbors who refused entrance of those people to their own countries.

If you can show me trustworthy documentation that these things are not so I’d be happy to investigate.

  7. I’m with you MD. The argument is always about so-called “asymetrical warfare.” It is the only kind. It garners immediate results and ultimately saves lives.
I just feel bad for the Israelis who now are truly on their own, due to the prevaricating numpty in the WH and his cronies. The ballerins’a dad was born in Israel, as I understand, and in one generation he has forsaken his homeland. Disgusting!

  8. Moral– don’t F with Israeli commandos.

Multiple shots to the target is correct policy — especially when attacked by multiple threats.

Some die instantaneously, some don’t. Some feign death, some are dead. The time to figure that out is after several rounds are in each and every target.

How to prevent this kind of bloodshed (?) — see first sentence.

  9. MD, “Jesus” was nuked, at least temporarily. He made a nearly identical comment under a different name that was in spam and hadn’t been fished out yet because it was poorly written, had bad links, and I wasn’t sure it it was a valid comment in any case. Oh, and it used an anonymizer.

I commented on the other thread. At the current trajectory of things, I’m concerned that Israel is going to be forced to choose between committing suicide or pull out the nuclear threat and do a Clint Eastwood “make my day”.

  12. I think you’ll find that the IDF emphasizes what some call “The Rhodesian Triple-tap”:
Two shots center mass, followed by one to the head (Very difficult to wear body armor that protects the head). And as was noted, when surrounded by hostiles, you keep firing until they stop moving. This ain’t bean-bag.

  21. “The new information about the manner and intensity of the killings undermines Israel’s insistence that its soldiers opened fire only in self defence and in response to attacks by the activists.”

Actually, this proves the Israeli version. If the attackers were using knives and metal clubs to attack the soldiers, you would find that most of the shots would be from up close and personal. Training dictates you shoot until the assailant is incapable of continuing the attack.

    peedoffamerican (01140e)

  22. One reason we often read about multiple shots, or shots in the head and back, is because many of these are “anchoring” shots.

When a smaller number of forces have to fight for their lives, and move from space-to-space, they have to walk by bodies that may be playing dead. They shoot the bodies as they move through the space, making it safe for themselves and their teammates. It sounds cold, but as another poster stated “this ain’t beanbag.”

Not sure what the Guardian is thinking by saying “The new information about the manner and intensity of the killings undermines Israel’s insistence that its soldiers opened fire only in self defence and in response to attacks by the activists.” It actually backs the story up. I think the Guardian was thinking two things:
    1. spin the story against Israel, no matter what
    2. shots at close range, especially to head, must signify “execution style” killing.

Had the Guardian come to this site for explanation, posts #’s 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 21, 22, and 26 have unanimous agreement and reasoning that the findings are perfectly consistent with the Israeli commando’s account.

  29. “…And it’s time for conservatives and liberals to stop taking one side or the other…”

No way. Pal terrorists, and guys who are essentially no different than Pal terrorists (like Hezbollah) have killed, without provocation, Americans many times. The Pals/Hezbollah/whatever are thus my enemy…permanently. Sorry, you don’t get to do things like blow up American embassies or shoot old Americans in wheelchairs and then negotitate a deal.

It will all be settled when the Pals/Hezbollah/whatever are totally destroyed, a la Nazi Germany, and driven off lands that never belonged to them, don’t belong to them now, and never will belong to them, and not before then.

At least, that’s my personal goal…and I am going to take a side.

  30. If the Palis would lay down their arms, there would be no more bloodshed – if the Israelis would lay down their arms, there would be no more Israel.

In a nutshell, the simple truth. Unfortunately the rest of the world believes otherwise – as does most of America. The stacked deck continually grows against Israel thanks to The Guardian and it’s media ilk. Their insidious complicity in propelling propaganda is going to be harder than ever to push back against. The bottom line is, it doesn’t even matter what the simple truth of the matter is on the smaller scale (Israel boarding the Rachel Corrie) or on the larger scale (the M.E. conflict w/Israel). Truth has become irrelevant.

    Dana (1e5ad4)

  31. It was Rachel Corrie’s destiny to be a human pancake. It was the path she chose.

That said, I am hopeful that Israel has salvaged something out of what was arguably an incompetently delayed response to the lies put forth by the usual suspects. In this day and age, the truth needs to be put out there before the lies infect the atmosphere.

  33. you guys do know that your master, Glen Beck, is promoting the work of poudly professed nazi advocate, Elizabeth Dilling, right?

    http://mediamatters.org/blog/201006040032

It was a real scream watching you guys try to do damage-control over that yesterday. So thanks for the laugh. “Stand by Your Man” is one of my favorite songs, personally.

    But here are the breaks—

Dilling, a proud Nazi advocate, remains a hero to neo-nazi groups all over America and Europe. Her hatred of Jewish people was matched only by her love for Hitler.

Her explicit motives as an American “patriot” were to
    -expell minorities,
    -rid the country of leftists,
-and discover an excrutianingly narrow “purity” of heritage, religion, nation and race… kind of like you guys!

Glenn claims to have been reading Dillings book the night before his promo for her.

He apparently thinks her work is important enough to-

    a) promote, against ALL the other books (sent by his readers) that he could choose from.
AND he promoted Dillings works side by side with historically important and antiqued pices of Americana.
That’s a pretty high honerable mention.

    b) After reading Dillings work the night before, Glenn was SO EXCITED to have found common cause with her.
-Beck and Dilling have the same political philosophy,
-they warm about the same enemies,
-in fact, its really the same, extremist, bigoted and murderous political philosophy spewed by both Beck and Dilling, and even by Patterico here!

The real reason Glen claimed common-cause with Dilling is precisely that he (and you all as well) DO have common cause with her.

Glenn didnt know Dilling was a proud and professed nazi.

But he read her work, and saw his own words coming back to him. THAT IS BECAUSE GLENN BECK AND LIZ DILLING SHARE THE SAME POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY!!!!

That should REALLY tell you guys something.

Without the filter of the label “nazi”, Glenn saw the raw hatred in Dillings work and EMBRACED IT!

He claimed a philosophical lineage with Dilling, and tried to tie that lineage to the American Revolution… something most real patriots might take exception to.

So there ya go kids,… your master is a Nazi.

    Andrew Breitbart’s principle media backer is a real, hands-down, certified, A1, all-around, bona-fide nazi.

Lets let glenn say it himself–

“But I am also getting these, this is a book, ‘The Red Network’, this came in from 1936.

People,… ummm McCarthy was absolutely right. Now he may not, –he may have used ‘bad tactics’ or whatever, but he was ABSOLUTELY right.

This is a book, and I am getting a TON of these FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW!”

That is probably the singularly most honest thing your master Beck has EVER said… you guys ARE doing exactly what the nascent Nazi movement was doing… to a tea!

    -Your hatred of minorities,
    -your hatred of other cultures,
    -your love for war
    -your fear of gay people,
    -your disdain for the poor,
-your advocacy, through James OQweef, for constantly monitoring your fellow Americans (whether or not they come from groups with government funding)
-your constant militant targeting of ANYTHING left of far far FAR right.
    etc…

This is no joke people, you need to really consider WHY YOUR MASTER FEELS COMMON CAUSE WITH A NAZI JUST BY READING HER PHILOSOPHY!!! (again, he didnt know her background, he just saw her ideas and said “that’s me! that’s the tea party! Dilling did exactly what we are doing now!)

You really might want to reassess this sick little game you are all playing.

I can assure you that the true fascism in your work is only becoming more and more crystal clear.

Glad it’s working for you, and we need to add Luvy to the list.

Hey luvy- you may ignore the following, because I’m now writing for the benefit of blogging neophytes who may have come here having heard of the stellar reputation of our host and his compadres.

    To Newcomers of Blog Reading:

Point #1- Before you post a comment, make sure you know what you are talking about. It helps to read carefully the other posts before yours so you can keep things straight. It is better to not post anything and let others think you don’t know what’s going on, than to post and remove all doubt.

Point #2- The potential strength of all electronic communication is that it allows you to compose your thoughts and reflect, rather then jumping to conclusions. But this potential strength is not always taken advantage of, as we see above. At post #34 “Luvy” makes the assumption that to access the internet “at work” means that one is stealing time and money from your employer. This is certainly a huge concern, but if one limits their personal access to “break” and “lunch” times it is not a problem. Furthermore, if one is a salaried employee who works more than 8 hours a day to start with and is getting their appropriate work done, there is no stealing or misuse of anything.

Point #3- It is good to follow one’s thoughts to their logical conclusions. Luvey has put forth the idea that there are two kind of Nazis, those who hate the Jewish people and would like to destroy them, and those who love the Jewish people and support Israel’s existence. This logical conlusion of Luvy’s reasoning does not match all of the other data.

Point #4- Even if someone is wrong about something, that does not necessarily make them wrong about everything.

Point #5- It is important to keep perspective as to what is the main point and what evidence is being used for. I believe in this instance, Beck was saying this Dillings lady had a lot of important things to say about communism and communists. This would be true for a Nazi, but one can also be anti-communist and not a Nazi, like Gen. Patton.

Point #6- Which I am now violating because I don’t have any more time, is to follow links and see if they say what they are supposed to say.

That is a non-exhaustive list of things to observe, so one does not get the reputation for being a “troll”.

    MD in Philly (cb8efe)

  45. you guys do know that your master, Glen Beck, is promoting the work of poudly professed nazi advocate,

Hilarious that you wring your hands over someone like Glenn Beck when deranged people like the following are embraced by so many on your side of the ideological divide. Of course, your heart is in the right place, isn’t it?! [Insert a big guffaw here]

    Frontpage.com, David Solway, June 2, 2010:

In a speech delivered at M.I.T. on October 18, 2001, entitled “The New War Against Terror,” Noam Chomsky, in a typical effort to manufacture dissent, asserted that in retaliation for 9/11 the U.S. was “apparently trying to murder 3 or 4 million people,” that “plans are being made and programs implemented for the death of several million people in the next couple of weeks, not Taliban of course, their victims” and that the coming American strike against the Taliban and Osama bin Laden should be understood as “some sort of silent genocide.”

The sheer nonsense of his ramblings somehow escaped his university auditors, as it does the vast sodality of his readers. His orating in Islamabad and offering his support to America’s Islamic adversaries, in the lingering smoke of the Twin Towers, is typical of the man. Indeed, Chomsky’s political acumen and moral substance are perhaps best characterized by his still unrepudiated support for Pol Pot’s homicidal Khmer Rouge regime.

Chomsky is back in the news again, furious that he — one of the most perfervid and contumacious of Jewish Israel-haters and a vociferous enemy of the Jewish state — was refused entry into Israel, which he immediately skewered as a “Stalinist” regime. I suppose it takes one to know one, for Chomsky, a hero of the left and one of its most zealous spokesmen, would have been intellectually at home in Stalin’s police state. Indeed, if there is a “Stalinist” to be found anywhere in the picture, it is Chomsky. Which is obviously why he has been embraced by the treasonous Israeli left, lionized, as David Hornik points out in a recent article for FrontPage Magazine, by the leftist daily Haaretz as an “illustrious American scholar,” “a superior intellect” and a “bold intellectual” unjustly targeted by “a state headed for fascism.”

For such urban syndicalists and ultra-comfortable socialists, Chomsky is a kind of latter-say Amos, the prophet who castigated the rich and powerful, and Israel is a North Korean lookalike intimidating its neighbors and sowing discord in the world.

Of course, Chomsky is no Amos and Israel no North Korea — and the Israeli left, like its American counterpart, is no flight of angels singing us to our rest in a beatific future characterized by equality and social harmony. It is, in fact, quite the opposite. The left is a congeries of modern totalitarians intent on building a socialist utopia which, despite their professions of concern for their fellow man, inevitably devolves into a bureaucratic nightmare of blandness, poverty, anomie, repression and forced leveling — and in some cases, with a gulag not far around the corner.

As Nathaniel Hawthorne put it in The Blithedale Romance, the worshippers of the socialist idol “never once seem to suspect…that [it is a] false deity, in whose iron features, immitigable to all the rest of mankind, they see only benignity and love.” But, as Hawthorne pointed out, this consuming, egalitarian passion is based on nothing more than an “all-devouring egotism,” leading only to debasement and violence. Such egotism is glaringly evident among the leaders of the movement who all enjoy status, privilege and often immense wealth which, it is fair to say, they have no intention of relinquishing.

  61. I’m still trying to figure out what patriotic sights side with Israel. Mount Rushmore? The Statue of Liberty? Washington Monument? Yosemite?

Well, whatever else it is, that troll’s none too bright.

  64. This from the NYT via Powerline:

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards are ready to provide a military escort to cargo ships trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, a representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday.

“Iran’s Revolutionary Guards naval forces are fully prepared to escort the peace and freedom convoys to Gaza with all their powers and capabilities,” Ali Shirazi, Khamenei’s representative inside the Revolutionary Guards, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Mehr news agency.

How’s that for demonstrating eagerness to be a responsible member of the international community? I personally think this would be an overreach for Iran. Each nation will be able to say whether or not they think Israel has a right to defend itself, a right to exist.

If Iran does this, I think Israel is really backed into the choice of committing suicide or showing the will defend themselves no matter what the cost. I don’t see how Israel could tolerate the Iranian Navy escorting anything to Gaza. I doubt it, but did Israel ever buy any F-22’s?
