Site Issues — Especially Comments

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 5:27 pm

As DRJ mentioned, the site was moved to a new server and things have been a little glitchy. I have received several e-mails from people relating to the site’s mercurial performance, mostly relating to comments. Some people are having trouble posting comments; some are having trouble seeing them; accessing and posting from a Blackberry is problematic; comments apparently cannot be posted at the Jury; and I don’t know if it is even possible to post at the Jury.

We are discussing these issues with the new host, and are working on fixing them. In the meantime, I can offer two suggestions: 1) try clearing your cache, and if that doesn’t work, 2) give it another day or so. I have always been told that it takes 24-48 hours for DNS changes to propagate throughout the Internet; we’re not quite there yet, but almost.

I am confident that, once the glitches are worked out, you will be glad we switched. The new host actually seems to care about making the site work, and I can already discern a noticeable improvement in performance in terms of posting. Until recently, posting even a simple five-line post could be an excruciating 20-minute ordeal. No longer; I don’t have to set aside a huge block of time to post a simple entry — which will probably mean more posts from me (as time and my job permit). This will ultimately be a good thing.

One day this site might actually work. In the meantime, bear with us — and thanks for your patience.

  1. nk pointed out earlier that deleting cookies after each site interaction works pretty much 100%. Depending on how you “clear the cache”, you may or may not need to explicitly clear cookies, and if there is an option to spare cookies from frequented sites one may need to deal with that also.

Also helps is opening in a new tab or window each time you want to access a different place on the site.

You may want to add this info to your post so the people who most need it can see it.

Glad to hear it will be much easier for you and other contributors.

  2. deleting cookies doesn’t work for posting at the jury – it looks like a wp configuration / name resolution / address forwarding problem.

  4. You know what occasionally works for me when cleaning my cache and cookies doesn’t get job done? I switch from Firefox (my usual browser) over to Safari or (yuck) Internet Explorer. Going back-and-forth like that is kind of a pain, but it beats having Sunday’s page continually open (which was a problem earlier today).

  5. For any technically knowledgable and inclined, I have a question about what is happening here. Say I open IE, click on favs and then on Patterico. The home page comes up and looks normal. This thread, for instance, stated it had four comments. Well, I looked at a few other things first, come back to home page which still looks good, hit on this thread, and instead of seeing 4 comments it says there have been no comments yet, and the list of “Recent Comments” is no longer the same list it was 2 seconds before- but reflects something quite awhile ago.

Where is this image coming from, especially if I erased all temp. internet files? If I type a response, it tells me it was sent, I go back to the Home Page and see it listed in the Recent Comments, click on it, but when the thread comes up my comment isn’t there. “Where” is the version with my post, and why can’t I see it?

    Thank you for your time.

  6. just a thought, but next time, you could announce that a change is occurring, and that glitches may ensue….

  7. red,

I’m to blame for that. I think I mentioned this on another thread but I was the main person arguing against forewarning everyone, primarily because there had already been several false starts.

  8. MD,

Your continued problems with the website concern me. If things don’t resolve by tomorrow morning, would you let us know in a comment or by emailing patterico.tips-at-gmail.com?

    DRJ (d43dcd)

  9. It was bounced around a couple of times and could have gone either way. I don’t think anyone would have taken credit if things had gone smoother, so I don’t think DRJ gets any blame when the rationale made sense to everybody. Just sayin’

  12. It is very common, within computer geek circles, to have variants on your two suggestions …

    1) try a refresh …
    2) give it some time, usually by starting some diagnostics – b the time the diagnostics have run, the problem often has resolved itself …

Then there is the classic Network folk choreography …

    1) Some process no longer works as expected …
    2) Check everything you can think of, to try to identify what changed … (problem still continues) …
    3) As your network folk if they changed anything … (they’ll say no, and will ask for the diagnostic info you have, so far) …
    4) The process spontaneously starts working again …
    5) You ask your network folk what they found/changed … (they say they found/changed nothing) …

As spells go, however, it *is* one of the more powerful ones …

  13. Has anyone noted that the site problems began to occur here right after the Obama Administration started making noises about “net neutrality” and the “Fairness Doctrine?”

BTW, This is something for thought, in this most awful of times, when a free website can’t have everything perfect from square one…

  16. In case it wasn’t incredibly obvious, guys, anyone who is doing anything other than noting their problems for your attention solely so you can be aware of them, and figure out what is causing them and fix them (i.e., anyone seriously complaining about problems) is an ass, and has adequately demonstrated they are victims of CRIS¹ their opinion has no value, and hopefully will never, ever visit the site again.

    =====================
    ¹ CRIS Cranio-Rectal Insertion Syndrome:
A common malady among humans, with a strong clustering among those self-classifying as “liberals”.
The most effective remedy thus far noted is to put a big bag over the victim’s head and repeatedly tell them to STFU whenever they attempt to speak.
It doesn’t help the direct victim of CRIS an awful lot, but it has had a markedly beneficial effect in reducing secondary victims.

  17. IgotBupkis-

I’m not sure I saw any comments that were meant as “I’m angry with you for being incompetent”.

I certainly did not mean any that way, my posts were intended to be giving feedback at what I found to be working or not, and my last was simple curiosity for anyone who had the knowledge, interest, and time to reply.

Currently trying to use the site “Normally”, we’ll see what happens.

  20. when my labor intensive hunt and peck comment would not post i thought i had been banned for something i said.

  21. I make it a practice to save my comment until I see it post. If the site is down I paste it to a word doc to save until later. I have often been frustrated myself when the effort of my “labor intensive hunt and peck” disappears also.

  26. The site is working pretty smoothly, and quickly, from my laptop. I talked to Matt a couple times about the CrackBerry stuff. I can get the mainpage to load, but cannot move past the front page, and still cannot comment, which is a bonus for the rest of you.
