Obama’s Aunt Granted Asylum

Filed under: Obama — DRJ @ 8:49 pm

President Obama’s Kenyan aunt has been granted asylum and can stay in the United States:

“A U.S. immigration court has granted asylum to President Barack Obama’s African aunt, allowing her to stay in the country, her attorneys announced Monday.

The decision was mailed Friday and comes three months after Kenya native Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of Obama’s late father, testified at a closed hearing in Boston, where she arrived in a wheelchair and two doctors testified in support of her case.

The basis for her asylum request hadn’t been made public. People who seek asylum must show that they face persecution in their homeland on the basis of religion, race, nationality, political opinion or membership in a social group.

Her lawyer, Margaret Wong of Cleveland, said last year that Onyango first applied for asylum “due to violence in Kenya.” The East African nation is fractured by cycles of electoral violence every five years.

In a November interview with The Associated Press, Onyango said she was disabled and was learning to walk again after being paralyzed from Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disorder.”

She moved to Boston in 2000 and was ordered deported in 2004, but did not leave and continued to live in public housing.

  1. How much has this women cost the taxpayer? Obama is multimillionaire. Why is the taxpayer funding her?

  2. Immigration laws? We don’t need no stinkin’ immigration laws!

Hey, lets just ignore those deportion orders. And people wonder why Arizona passed the law they did. It’s not like people were taking our laws seriously.

  3. Both Holder and Napolitano said they haven’t read the Arizona law. Well clearly they haven’t read the federal one either.

  4. It’s understandable that they wouldn’t return her to Kenya. Being the aunt of the President of the U.S. would make her a fat target for kidnapping.

That said, I agree with tim pfister that Aunt Zeituni ought to be supported by her family rather than the taxpayer, which would mean that the Obamas ought to be sending her a check, not Uncle Sam.

  5. Heh! Obama could not win on this one. He’s either a nepotist or a traitor to his family. I’m glad he went with the loss that would do good to somebody.

  6. Seriously, is anyone surprised? There is no way they would deport the President’s aunt. After all, what would China think? Human rights abuses, indeed.

  7. The following doesn’t really fit the topic per se, but I have to post it because I found it so unpredictable and, in fact, a nice change of pace.

When I first heard about “activists” planning to protest against Lakers coach Phil Jackson’s opinion on the Arizona immigration law — and being somewhat aware of his “lefty leanings” — I immediately thought the demonstrators would be in the mold of Tea-Party, conservative types, and they, in turn, were irked at what I suspected must have been liberal-scold comments from Jackson along the lines of “RACISM!”, “GESTAPO TACTICS!!”, cruel and heartless laws!”

In actuality, such a relief to see a bit of common sense for a change instead of the nonsense and phoniness of all-too-common limousine liberalism (and one doesn’t have to be wealthy to be guilty of that).

    LA Times, 5-17-10:

Activists outraged at comments made by Lakers Coach Phil Jackson that seem to back Arizona’s controversial new immigration law plan to rally outside Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles before Monday’s playoff opener against the Phoenix Suns.

“The way we look at it, Phil Jackson is supporting the Arizona law,” said Mario Gonzalez, a longtime Lakers fan and rally organizer. “That’s surprising. It caught us off guard. We want to find out where the team stands on the law.”

Sparking the furor are remarks made by Jackson to ESPN.com columnist J.A. Adande in which the Lakers coach seems to back the incendiary Arizona law, which allows local police to check citizens documents and arrest them if they don’t have them.

“Am I crazy, or am I the only one that heard [the legislature] say, ‘We just took the United States immigration law and adopted it to our state?’” Jackson said of the Arizona statute.

The Lakers coach then disputed the columnist’s assertion that Arizona legislatures had “usurped” federal immigration law — an allegation widely made by critics who say the law could lead to racial profiling of Latinos.

“It’s not usurping” federal law, Jackson replied, adding that the Arizona lawmakers “gave it some teeth to be able to enforce it.”

Jackson, long known as a free spirit who in Adande’s words “has showed lefty leanings in the past,” also seems to chastise the Suns’ management for its criticism of the Arizona law.

The Suns’ owner and several players have publicly criticized the statute.

“I don’t think teams should get involved in the political stuff,” Jackson told the ESPN.com columnist. “If I heard it right, the American people are really for stronger immigration laws, if I’m not mistaken. Where we stand as basketball teams, we should let that kind of play out and let the political end of that go where it’s going to go.”

  8. You know, its easy to complain about the possible undue influence, but really, what if someone kidnapped her and held her for randsom? So on balance i am glad she is in america and i am willing to give everyone involved a mulligan.

  9. Fair enough, A.W, but why does it have to be on the government teat, when her nephew is so rich?

  10. If her nephew were to ask me for advice(which is not going to happen), I would suggest that providing for her support would earn him some really good brownie points. Even I might have a positive thought concerning him. That won’t happen either.

The messiah won’t even help her get out of the projects. You think he’d even take the call?
